Explorations in Film and Television Syllabus Course Description: The culture of cinema and broadcast television tell a unique story of American history and innovation. Students in Explorations in Film and Television will be introduced to the technology, industry icons, and stars of the big and small screen. By studying and writing about film and television, students will analyze technological and cultural trends and understand how to be an informed viewer in the future. Suggested Prerequisites: None Rationale: Inquiring and gaining a comprehensive background to understand modern entertainment is important. The foundation set in this course can prepare students for future career paths in a variety of options. Materials/Equipment: • Computer with camera to make videos and sound adjustments. • Internet access Course Outline: • Inventions and inventors leading to film making • Silent film era, Sound in film, Technicolor • Golden Age of Hollywood • The Great Depression and World War Era effects on the film industry • History of movie musicals, film noir, and horror films, Epic Films, African American films, Comic books and the influence on movie • Alfred Hitchcock films and achievements; Orson Welles and "Citzen Kane" and his achievements; Disney's animated films;Characteristics of Frank Capra films, Billy Wilder, Elia Kazan; 1970's directors Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese; Sydney Pollock and Sidney Lumet and five notable films; Steven Spielberg and George Lucas' careers and achievements; Re-emergence of female directors Jodie Foster, Sopie Coppola, Penny Marshall and thier work; Film industry in the 1960's and five key directors; History of Warner Brothers and achievements; Teen movies of the 1980's and the impact of John Hughes; Screen writers of the Modern era • Actors Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando and James Stewart notable films, Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Warren Beatty's careers; Clint Eastwood and five major career milestones; Modern film actors and actresses and achievements; Will Smith, Sydney Poitier, Denzel Washington careers. • Actresses Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly traits and highlights of their careers; Marilyn Monroe films and what influenced her; Lucille Ball and five acievements; African American actors and five films and achievements • Three ways "Casablanca" influenced our culture; "The Wizard of Oz" and why it's a timeless classic; "Gone with the wind" and the influences it had on our culture • Hollywood Western films and television shows, dates, development and actors, five classic styles; Gangster and crime films, actors and actresses; Early comedies producers and actors; Teen movie productions in 1950's and 1960's • Identify three actors on Hollywoods Blacklist; Censorship, Hays office and MPAA ratings system; Sherman Anti-Trust decision • Movie Trailer market • Three key dates for film composers; composers and movie soundtracks; evolution of special effects; Pixar computer animation • Five key dates in the emergence of television, variety shows, iconic shows of the 1950's • M*A*S*H* • Music promotion on television • Three shifts of children's television and four significant shows and creators • Non traditional family sitcoms of the 1960's and identify thier creators or stars, and changes in sitcoms. Also Garry Marshalls sitcoms and descibe charactors and relationships; Aaron Spelling, five of his shows and three iconic stars; Norman Lear's impact on TV and society? • Animated television and five animated series; Sci-fi television; Soap apera genre, three standard practices and three shows; Television specials • Evolution of talk shows and two ground breaking figures; "Saturday Night Live" and Late Shows impact on culture and television • HBO, MTV, and ESPN and the cultural impact of each and the impact of cable television.
