Journal of the Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association Volume 13, Number 1 (2013) Bruce Ronkin, Editor Northeastern University Published with Support from A Historical Investigation of Patterns in Sophomore Album Release Jennifer Fowler Belmont University Stuart J. Fowler Middle Tennessee State University Rush Hicks Belmont University Abstract Nielsen SoundScan and Billboard chart data for the periods 1993- 2003 are utilized to create a cohort panel dataset comprised of “Heatseek- ers” artists and groups for the purpose of studying historical patterns of sophomore album release. Following Hendricks and Sorensen (2008), the genres used in this study include Rock, Rap/R&B/Dance, and Country/ Blues. The econometric model employed is a hazard function as described in Cameron and Trivedi (2009) and Wooldridge (2010). For the panel of acts, the paper documents the following empirical facts. First, the hazard function indicates that most sophomore albums are released 45 months after the debut album and if a sophomore release does not occur within 80 months of the debut album there will most likely be no sophomore release. Second, the time between album release is a function of past album sales; all else equal, the larger the hit the less time it takes for the next album to be released. Third, genre influences the timing of release; all else constant, the Rap/R&B/Dance genre consistently delayed sophomore albums rela- tive to the Country/Blues and Rock genres. Fourth, conditional on suc- cessful debut album sales, acts from the Country/Blues and Rap/R&B/ Dance genres release more quickly than acts from the Rock genre.

II. ARCHIVE OF BOOKS, RECORDINGS, SHEET MUSIC, VIDEOS, AND ADVERTISING MATERIALS IIB. Recordings II B1. African Source Materials It is Africa that is the largest presence in African American music, and it is still the least understood. Africa itself is still largely unknown to most Americans, and there is so much uncertainly in placing the ancestry of any specific African tribal group in any particular area of the United States or the Caribbean. Slaves were marched thousands of miles from their tribal areas before they were placed on the ships, and when they arrived in the Western Hemisphere there was generally an effort to separate members of the same tribe so they would not be able to communicate with the other slaves except through the slave holder’s language. What is known is the general area the slaves came from - West Africa, roughly from Senegal to Angola, and inland in the northern regions to the Niger basin in what is now Mali. This selection of recordings is only an introduction to the wealth of music from this area, but the archive includes the documentary recordings of the music I recorded on my travels in these areas as I searched for roots of the blues and other musical forms I knew from the United States. Six albums were released by Sonet Records in Sweden, and Folkways Records in the United States, and the book The Roots of the Blues also resulted from these travels. The 1974-1975 Recordings AFRICAN JOURNEY A Search for the Roots of the Blues Vol. 1 - LP, Recorded and documented by Samuel Charters.

  • Hip-Hop Interview with Bay Area Rap Boss Celly Cel
Hip-Hop Interview with Bay Area Rap Boss Celly Cel Written by Robert ID2503 Monday, 10 April 2006 07:27 - With the surge in the west coast hip-hop ‘hyphy’ movement and the west coast artists finally being recognized for their talents, we had to speak to one of the legends of rap music from the Bay Area; Celly Cel. Celly Cel is more than a hip-hop or rap artist, he is an entrepreneur. Besides being known as the Bay Area Rap Boss he is also the owner of his own record label Realside Records. On April 4th Celly Cel dropped his 6th solo album titled ‘Slaps, Straps & Baseball Hats’. Known in the hip-hop community for his ‘real talk’ and his ability to be fan friendly, we decided to sit down and ask about the new album, the mood in the Bay Area now and of course the Hyphy Movement. This interview was done on the 5th of April, the day after Celly’s album dropped. Knowing how busy he was with the album releasing, we would like to thank Celly for taking time to do the interview and letting us spend as much time as we needed talking to him. He is truly a class act and we wish the best for him. ThugLifeArmy – Thanks for taking time to talk to us, it has been awhile since we’ve talked. Celly Cel – Yeah man just running around here trying to get everything ready for the new release. I’ve been in the studio and what not; in and out the gym – ya know the usual.
