our View rise in tuition needed to survive The budget crisis continues for Georgia, and the University System is not safe. Last week, the Board of Regents approved tuition and fee hikes that are an average of nine percent higher for students in colleges and universities. Each time we say that a tuition increase is needed to survive this economic downturn. Again, this seems to be the case. The Board of Regents predicted that a 35 percent tuition increase would be needed to completely make up budget shortfalls. It’s great news that the Regents have not passed along those kind of increases to students. But, each time tuition rises, the bill for students inches higher and higher. The Board of Regents is still honoring the fixed tuition for those students who qualify, but it is unacceptable to Letters to the Editor disguise fee increases as “institutional fees” that every student is forced to pay.
