Raneem El Welily and Marwan El Shorbagy are the 2018 El Gouna International Squash Open champions. In the woman's final World No.2 El Welily defeated World No.1 El Sherbini in an exciting final, which went into overtime for 75 minutes. In the men's final World No.4 El Shorbagy beat World No.1 Ali Farag in straight sets. El Gouna Film Festival 2018 Second Edition
The second edition of El Gouna Film Festival will take place on the 20th to the 28th of September 2018, in Egypt's blissful resort on the Red Sea, El Gouna. Egypt to build railway line as alternative to Suez Canal Egypt has announced plans to build a railway line offering an alternative to the Suez Canal. The line will connect the Port of Alex andria and Damietta on the Mediterranean coast to the Port of Nuweiba on the Red Sea. It will be the first land bridge between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, as well as a new railway connection between North Africa and the Arab Peninsula. The railway link will transfer freight as well as passenger traffic. According to experts, freight can be transported between the two seas in three hours, which constitutes a considerable reduction in travel time of transport via the Suez Canal. The railway will be used for the transport of materials necessary for the rebuilding of Iraq and Syria. The first phase of the line will include the construction of a railway line between the Mediterranean ports of Alexandria and Damietta, both situated in the north of Egypt at a 200 kilometer distance from each other. The second phase will connect r------. the Port of Damietta to the Port of Nuweiba, a coastal town in the eastern part of the Sinai Peninsula via 500 kilometer of railway. A major logistics zone will be estab lished close to the Port ofNuweiba, in addition to an inland terminal for freight distri bution. The Ministry of Transport said a financial and technical assessment of the project was expected to be ready within four months. Construction of the new railroad is estimated to cost around 2,6 billion Euro. The Ministry will invite international con sortiums to submit bids for the construction of the new line, which could commence in July.

R_ed )ea Bu lletiQ 31 El Fayoum & Wadi EI-Rayan (Vol.1) EI-Fayoum is a natural depression in the Western Desert of Egypt, covering 12000 km2. It is a unique depression and the only one linked to the Nile Valley via the Bahr Yousef canal. Ahuge saline lake, known as Lake Qarun, is located in the deepest part of the depression, 43m below sea level. The magnificent cliffs of Gabel Qatrani (350m) appear close to the lake's northwestern edge.
The Egypt's only waterfalls, man-made The valley of Wadi EI-Rayan, 65 km southwest of Fayoum city, is home to two large artificial lakes created to divert excess agricultural drainage water from Fayoum oasis. It is also home to the country's only waterfalls. The Fayoum oasis originally drained into Lake Qarun in the north. But the lake can take only a certain volume of drainage water. Anything over this capacity and the lake level would rise and flood the surrounding land, often doing irreparable damage because of the waters high salt content. This means that the amount of water that can be used in the Fayoum is limited by the region's maximum drainage capacity. Consequently, until re cently water-intensive crops such as rice and reeds could be grown only in very small quantities. Furthermore, no new land could be reclaimed without causing swamping of existing farmland near Lake Qarun. There was a pressing need to find an alternative drainage basin, and the large depression of Wadi El Rayon was found to be suitable.
In 1974, a 9-kilometers open channel and an 8-kilometers tunnel were cut through the desert from the western side of the Fayoum depression to the large, dry depression of Wadi El Rayon. Drainage water now flows into Wadi El Rayon forming two large lakes. Water first reaches the northern lake and when it's overwhelmed, a stream flows towards a deeper part of the depression, where another lake is formed. As the course of the stream was eroded, natural rocks were exposed and waterfalls formed over them.
There are several cascades on the stream, none of them higher than 2 to 4 meters. Yet, they have attracted considerable attention among the local Egyptians, as many have never seen waterfalls before. The falls, however, will not last forever as the level of the lower lake is continually rising and the falls will exist only until the expanding surface area allows a rate of evaporation equal to the amount of water flowing into it. The shorelines of the lakes are densely vegetated making them perfect wintering habitats for migrating birds and breeding spot for many fishes. Ivan Kupala's is a traditional Slavic holiday. Currently in Russia there are two ways to celebrate it: one is held by unofficial pagan religious groups at the end of June when nights are shortest, while the other is held is July 6-7 according to the Julian or Old Style calendar. This latter cele bration is sanctioned by the Russian Orthodox Church.
On this holiday, as people say, water can become a "friend" to fire, and this union is supposed to be a natural power. The main feature of Ivan Kupala's Night was the cleansing bonfire. People used to dance around bonfires and jump over them: the one who jumped the highest bonfire was considered to be the happiest person.
In some regions, people led their cattle through these bonfires to protect them from diseases. Mothers burned the clothes of their ill children, to burn the illnesses away as well. Both ceremonies include numerous Slavic rituals uniting fire and water. It is celebrated in Russia, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine during days of the summer solstice.
In the floral world, fern was connected to legends about treasure. Thanks to the fern flowers, which blossom for only several moments at midnight on Ivan Kupala Day, all the buried trea sures could be seen, no matter how deep they were in the ground.
In pre-Revolutionary Russia, Ivan Kupala Day was the most important holiday of the year. Practi cally everyone took part in this feast. It was also essential for each person to be an active partici pant in all the ceremonies and rites.

3500-year-old Army General's Tomb Discovered by Egyptian Archaeologists
Cairo University archaeological mission directed by Dr. Ola El Aguizy discovered a tomb of the Great Army General in the period of King Ramses II, which is named "lwrhya" in Sakkara. The discovery was carried out in the last excavation season 2017/2018, resulting in an important discovery in the New Kingdom necropolis south of the Causeway of King Unas in Saqqara.
This tomb is probably dated to both the reigns of kings Seti I and Ramses II. It is still not fully excavated, yet it has already given us a lot of material testifying to the high status of its owner and his family."
The owner of the tomb is a high army general, and high steward of the domain of Amun, high steward of the estates of Ramses II in the domain of Amun (the Ramesseum).
His name appears on the tomb together with that of his son "Yuppa" and his grandson "Hatiay;" the latter oc cupyies a very significant position in the inscriptions on the blocks found on the walls still in place. He had begun his military career during the reign of king Seti I and reached the highest positions in the Egyptian court during the reign of king Ramses II.
The fact that the names of many members of the family are very prom inent in the tomb might suggest that it might be a family tomb. This could not be surely attested except after the excavations of its sanctuary and its shaft.
The tomb seems to follow the style of the contemporary tombs in the area: forecourt- statue room with adjacent plastered vaulted store houses, peri-style court and western chapels which are still not exca vated. This high official from foreign origin was among the many foreigners who settled in Egypt and succeeded to reach high positions in the Egyptian society in the New Kingdom.

The remains of such fortified walls were discovered in the past few years by Dr. Mohamed Abdel Maq soud and his team that worked on the site known as Tell Heboua I and II; on the Pelusian branch of the Nile, in Eastern Qantara.
The archaeological discoveries in Qantara proved that there was an active daily life of a garrison which indicated a wine cellar and livestock in the scenes on the walls. All the scenes of this tomb are quite exceptional, and its artistic features are very characteristic to the time of King Seti I and that of King Ramses II; a fact that proves that this tomb had been constructed over different phases. The Egyptian archaeological mission of the Ministry of Antiquities uncovered the remains of a Greaco-Roman Temple during excava tions at AI-Salam archaeological site located about 50 km east of Siwa Oasis.
Dr. Ayman Ashmawi, Head of Egyptian Antiquities sector at the Ministry of Antiquities said that the mission uncovered the front part of the temple as well as parts of the temple's foundations, main entrance and remains of its one meter deep enclosure wall.
The wall leads to a front courtyard and on its both sides found entrances to other chambers. Dr Abdel Aziz EI-Demery, "Head of the archaeological mission," said that during the removal of the debris from the site, the mission found many of the stones and architectural elements of the temple's walls, including the upper lintels decorated with scenes as well as parts of corner pillars decorated with egg, arrow and tgngue, which were w~ll known in the Greco-Roman era. The mission discovered also remains of pots, coins, and a statue of a man with Greek facial features, as well as two limestone statues of two lions which one of them is headless. It's going to shed more light on the history of the Siwa Oasis. The Siwa Oasis is one of the most isolated Egyptian settlements. It lies between the Qattara Depression and the Egyptian Sand Sea, around 560 km (348 miles) west of Cairo. The historical timeline of the oasis isn't all that clear, but people are thought to have lived there since at least 1 0,000 BCE. This newly found temple find dates from between 200 BCE and 300 CE. While Egypt came under Hellenistic and then Roman rule during this time, the architecture and religions of ancient Egypt remained very much alive, and influences both traditional and the new which can be seen in the buildings of the time - including the temple at AI-Salam. The dig tells experts more about the activities in the Siwa Oasis during this period, as well as how the foreign rulers occupied the land, and the number of people living here at the time. Temples were used as places of trade and socializing as well as for religious events, and were where the priests actually lived. Currently the Siwa Oasis region's biggest claim to fame is being the location where the Greek King Alexander the Great consulted the oracle of Ammon. It was here he believed that he was called to be the divine King of Egypt. We think we know so much about ancient Egypt, but there's so much of it left to find.
