MINUTES 2015 Heronry Conservation •Installing Pandal (Marquee) in heronries should still be proposed. However, list of large (top ten) heronries where it can happen is required. Action: P.O.Nameer A) Coordinators of each district are requested to list the sites and forward. •Note: Heronry conservation is not aimed at protecting all heronries. It is aimed at reducing animosity of people towards the birds, avoid felling of trees and attempt to move the heronries away from human settlements. Recommendations (From Heronry Census Report, 2014) •The heronries should be visited by the local forest department officials periodically during the breeding season. •With the help of the local birdwatchers, conservation groups should be created locally similar to the Eco Development Committees (EDC) or Vana Samrakshana Samithis (VSS). These groups should monitor the heronries, create awareness in the general public and protect the heronry from possible threats. Some members of these groups could be trained and utilised for data collection. •In the case of large heronries, watchers should be appointed for the season. •In case of heronries in public places where the local people complain of nuisance caused by droppings etc., tarpaulin sheets should be placed below the nest trees. At some appropriate sites, “heronry guards” (this was designed by Praveen Mohandas. For details, see Appendix 2) can be tried out and if found successful, can be implemented in other places also. Clarification about the role of KFD in heronry survey and conservation • Support for heronry survey (Logistics? Funds?): absolute necessity in districts with a large number of heronries; e.g. Palakkad. • Notifying heronry sites as protected area? • In Kannur, the Social Forestry Division, KFD has promised all help for conducting the survey. They are also planning to put up sign boards at the major heronries, highlighting the protection status of the nesting birds and their ecological importance. They have requested for suggestions from the birdwatchers on how to implement this proposal effectively. Jayson Division of Wildlife Biology, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Kerala 680653, India. Email: [email protected] Abstract Birds of Mangalavanam mangroves were studied from May 1998 to May 1999, based on observational methods. Forty-one species of birds were recorded representing 25 families. The most common bird species found at Mangalavanam were Little Cormorant (Phalacrocorax niger) and Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax). Highest species richness of birds was found in the months of May and July (18 species). Nesting of Little Cormorant and Black-crowned Night Heron was observed from February to July. Though the area is an ideal roosting site for Little Cormorant and Black-crowned Night Heron, observations during the 1998 and 1999 monsoons revealed high mortalities. House Crow was the main predator of the eggs and nestlings of other bird species. The major factors, which are detrimental to the ecosystem, are 1. Proposal to lease part of the land to a Trust, 2. Parking of oil tankers on the Salim Ali road, 3. Dumping of waste in the lake, 4. Air pollution due to the unloading of cement, 5. Encroachment of puramboke land on the eastern side, 6. Uncontrolled growth of weeds in the lake. Recommendations for better management of the Mangalavanam mangroves have been provided. KAI-IL IN two recent papers Clark (19'69) and Curry-Lindahl (1970) have reported spread-wingpostures in storks and other birds and discussed someof the functionsthat they may serve. During recent field studies (1959-69) of all 17 speciesof storks, I have had opportunitiesto observespread-wing postures. in a number of speciesand under different environmentalconditions (Table i). The contextsin which thesepostures occur shed somelight on their possible functions. TYPES OF SPREAD-WING POSTURES Varying degreesof wing spreadingare shownby at least 13 species of storksunder different conditions.In somestorks (e.g. Ciconia nigra, Euxenuragaleata, Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis, and ]abiru mycteria) I observedno spread-wingpostures and have foundno referenceto them in the literature. In the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) I observedonly a wing-droopingposture--with the wings held a short distanceaway from the sidesand the primaries fanned downward--in migrant birds wetted by a heavy rain at NgorongoroCrater, Tanzania. Other species often openedthe wingsonly part way, in a delta-wingposture (Frontis- piece), in which the forearmsare openedbut the primariesremain folded so that their tips crossin front o.f or below the. tail. In some species (e.g. Ibis leucocephalus)this was the most commonly observedspread- wing posture. All those specieslisted in Table i, with the exception of C. ciconia,at times adopted a full-spreadposture (Figures i, 2, 3), similar to those referred to by Clark (1969) and Curry-Lindahl (1970) in severalgroups of water birds.

Gauhati University. Abstract Open bill stork characterized by having large bills, with a gap of mandibles in middle. The present article mainly emphasized the feeding ecology of the open bill storks, emphasized on feeding behaviour, techniques and strategies of feeding and types and availability of prey species in the Brahmaputra Valley, Assam. Wetlands (Beels) of Brahmaputra river system and harvested Paddy fields were the favourite foraging sites for open bill storks in non breeding seasons. It has been observed that during non breeding season open bill stork devoted maximum time in resting (35% of the active period) either on a high land or on roosting tree. 33% of the active time was utilized in search of food. Soaring was one of the important behaviour noticed in open bill stork. An open bill stork utilized 13% of the day active time in soaring behavior. Minimum time was used in aggression behaviour that includes chasing, threatening, snatching etc. Open bill storks feed molluscs and fishes and the types of prey never vary during summer and winter.
