Beyond the General Belgrano and Sheffield: Lessons in Undersea and Surface Warfare from the Falkland Islands Conflict MIDN 4/C Swartz Naval Science 2—Research Paper Instructor: CDR McComas 8 April 1998 1 Beyond the General Belgrano and Sheffield: Lessons in Undersea and Surface Warfare from the Falkland Islands Conflict 425 miles off the coast of Argentina lie the Falkland Islands, a string of sparsely inhabited shores home to about 1500 people and far more sheep. The Falklands (or the Malvinas, as the Argentineans call them) had been in dispute long before Charles Darwin incubated his theory of evolution while observing its flora and fauna. Spain, France, Britain, and Argentina each laid claim to the islands at some point; ever since 1833, the Falklands have been a British colony, although ever since 1833, the Argentineans have protested the British “occupation.” In April of 1982, an Argentine military dictatorship made these protests substantial with a full-scale invasion of the islands. The British retaliated, eventually winning back the islands by July. Militarily, this entirely unexpected war was heralded as the first “modern” war—a post- World War II clash of forces over a territorial dispute. “Here at last was a kind of war [military planners] recognized”; unlike Vietnam, this was “a clean, traditional war, with a proper battlefield, recognizable opponents in recognizable uniforms and positions, and no messy, scattered civil populations or guerrilla groups to complicate the situation.”1 Here, the “smart” weapons developed over 40 years of Cold War could finally be brought to bear against real targets. Likewise, the conflict provided one of the first opportunities to use nuclear submarines in real combat. -

Recycling of Rame Head Auxiliary Support Vessel Defence Equipment & Support Contents Executive Summary Executive Summary Ex-Auxiliary Support Vessel Rame Head ceased Background active service with UK MOD on the 27th March 2008. Introduction Following a long and distinguished service which Competition included a part in World War II supplying much needed food and war materials from the US to the Recycling of Rame Head UK, she was eventually consigned to a recycling Photographic Evidence and recovery operation and an invitation to Tender Competition which was issued in August 2008. Final Outturn The successful winning bidder was the Ghent Conclusion based company Van Heyghen Recycling (part of international Galloo Recycling Group) and Rame Head left HMNB Portsmouth under tow for Belgium on the 25th Feb 2009. On the 8th March 2010 Van Heyghen Recycling reported that Ex-Auxiliary Support Vessel Rame Head had been completely dismantled and recycled in accordance with all relevant EU Waste Management Legislation and the UK’s Ship Recycling Strategy. INSTITUTE PROCEEDINGS To shoot or not to shoot: an ethical decision Major Andrew Brayshaw Staff Officer Grade 2 Capstone Doctrine Army Knowledge Centre, Australian Army1 This paper looks at two incidents that took place during the 1982 Falklands War and whether or not the actions they took were ethical. Both incidents involved a combat medical technician shooting an unarmed soldier who was ablaze. In Incident A, at Goose Green, a British soldier shot an Argentine prisoner. In Incident B, in the Logistic Ship Landing Sir Galahad at Bluff Cove, a different British soldier shot another British soldier. The author does not judge the ethics of either action. Under Fire: The Falklands War and the Revival of Naval Gunfire Support I have always placed a high priority on exercising NGS. All my ships have had the capacity & I made sure we knew how to use it. NGS became a lower priority for the Naval Staff & new construction planned had no gun. Op [Operation] Corporate changed all that thinking. Captain Michael Barrow1 The reputation of naval gunfire support (NGS) has waxed and waned since the initial development of the capability. At times, NGS has been considered to have been of supreme importance. At others, it has been viewed as worthless. By the end of the 1970s, there was burgeoning opinion in some circles that NGS had become obsolete. Operation Corporate – the Falklands War – demonstrated that reports of the demise of NGS had been greatly exaggerated. NGS played a prominent role during Operation Corporate, but it was just one of a multitude of capabilities. As John Ballard put it: ‘The British...integrated nearly every tool in the kit bag to mount their operation rapidly and win at the knife’s edge of culmination.’2 There can be no doubt that the destructive mix of capabilities utilised by British forces was crucial to the success of Operation Corporate. However, due to the inevitable limits of operating so far from home, NGS was often required to redress deficiencies in other fire support capabilities.
