1st Vice President A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT TREASA GOODWIN-SMYTH Gary Power Summer is finally here after a very long winter. It’s time now to get out and enjoy the lovely days of summer. 2nd Vice President On August 11th we will all be heading to Ireland for our Biennial Dinner Dance. I am delighted to Martina O’Dowd say we have two very distinguished honorees. Our Cork Woman of the Year is member Dolores Casey from Inniscarra. Dolores is an active member of the Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk Treasurer and Queens, and currently holds the positions of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and Assistant Catherine O’Shea Financial Secretary. She also serves as Secretary of the Mulligan Quinn Branch of Comhaltas and a drama group called the Cill Cais Players. Our Cork Man of the Year is Niall Cahalane from Recording Castlehaven. His league and championship career with the Cork senior team spanned fourteen Secretary seasons. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his era, Niall has won two All-Ireland Kathy McCarthy Senior Football Championship medals, one Minor All Ireland Medal, seven Munster Senior Medals, as well as one International Rules Series Medal. Sergeant at Arms Being an avid fan, I would like to share with you, that Cork’s Camogie and Football Larry Finn legend Rena Buckley from Inniscarrra is retiring from inter-county. Rena has won 18 All-Ireland titles in football and camogie, captaining Cork to both crowns. A.10-time All-Star she is the most Trustees: decorated player of all time, but work and personal commitments led her to walk away. Martin Hurley Cork will certainly miss her. Timothy Murphy We are having our first Young Rebel Networking Group meeting, this month and I urge all you Mary Power “Young Rebels” to come and support your fellow young future leaders. The meeting will take place on Monday, 6/18, at 7:15pm. Also, Happy 70th Birthday to member Catherine Browne and Happy 30th Birthday to daughter Keara who celebrated at the Cork Hall. NOTICE OF MOTION: JUNE MEETING DATE CHANGE That the County Cork B. P. & P. Association suspend the August meeting for the summer holidays. This Notice of Motion will be voted on at the May General Membership meeting on June 7th at 7:00 pm. CONGRATULATIONS: • Many blessings to Ciara Callanan, daughter of member Josie and Aidan, on making her First Holy Communion. • Congratulations to Helen and Mickey Peare on the birth of their beautiful new granddaughter Emerson Mae, and for 37 years of wedded bliss! • Tim & Denise Murphy are proud to announce their son Daniel’s graduation from Manhattan College in the Class of 2018. Daniel, who is a past Co. Cork Scholarship winner, received his B.S in Civil Engineering. Daniel will start working for McLaren Engineering in September as a Structural Engineer Diver. • Happy Birthday to member Catherine Browne who celebrated her 70th Birthday and her daughter’s 30th Birthday with a lively ‘do at the Cork Hall. Many happy returns, ladies! • Congratulations to our friend, Father Tom Basquel who will celebrate the 42nd anniversary of his ordination.

Prayers are also requested for our dear member Mary Driscoll, Olivene Hurley, and Brian Creedon. c Condolences d We are deeply saddened to report the passing of former member William (Billy) Naughton, on April 13, 2018 in Boynton Beach Florida. Billy was 85 years old. Billy was a native of Kilmallock, Co. Limerick and attended the Christian Brothers school in Charleville, Co. Cork. He worked for the Board of Education before retiring to Florida to enjoy his golden years in the sunshine. He is survived by his wife Mary Cotter Naughton, daughter Noreen, son John, and his grandchildren. Mary was the co-chair of the Association's 125th Anniversary journal. Mary's father, Henry Cotter, hailed from Passage West and was also a member of the Co. Cork Association. We extend our condolences to Mary, Noreen, John and the entire Naughton and Cotter families both in the U.S. and Ireland.

Honorary Chairman Niall Cahalane, the eldest of ten siblings was born in Castlehaven, West Cork to John and Dan Murphy Maureen Cahalane in 1963. He was educated at the local National School in Castlehaven and attended St. Fachtna’s De La Salle Secondary school in Skibbereen. His interest in football began Chairman at a very early age, first playing for his native Castlehaven Football Club at the age of seven in Andrew Murphy 1970. Niall continued to play with Castlehaven for the U14, U16, Minor U21 and Senior Football 022-22127 from 1970 until his retirement in 2004. During his illustrious football career Niall wearing the

Committee Cork Jersey won 2 Senior All Ireland Championship Medals in 1989 and ’90 that same year Cork John Coffey won the Double in Football and Hurling. He won many underage medals for West Cork and 021-481 2136 County, also winning 9 Munster Senior Medals, and 2 All Stars 1987 and 1989. Niall worked in Fr. Aquin Casey New York in the construction industry during 1982, 1983 and 1984. In Cork he has worked as an 086-815 3476 auctioneer for the past thirty years and is a partner in the firm of Cahalane Skuse Auctioneers & Billy Browne Valuers. Niall is married to the former Ailish Cleary and they have seven children – three sons 022-28621 and four daughters.
