It’s time now to get out and enjoy the lovely days of summer. 2nd Vice President On August 11th we will all be heading to Ireland for our Biennial Dinner Dance. I am delighted to Martina O’Dowd say we have two very distinguished honorees. Our Cork Woman of the Year is member Dolores Casey from Inniscarra. Dolores is an active member of the Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk Treasurer and Queens, and currently holds the positions of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and Assistant Catherine O’Shea Financial Secretary. She also serves as Secretary of the Mulligan Quinn Branch of Comhaltas and a drama group called the Cill Cais Players. Our Cork Man of the Year is Niall Cahalane from Recording Castlehaven. His league and championship career with the Cork senior team spanned fourteen Secretary seasons. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his era, Niall has won two All-Ireland Kathy McCarthy Senior Football Championship medals, one Minor All Ireland Medal, seven Munster Senior Medals, as well as one International Rules Series Medal. Financial Our Dinner Dance Chairpersons are Past President Mae O’Driscoll and Andrew Murphy. Secretary Once again we are publishing a souvenir journal dedicated to our wonderful honorees. Sergeant at Arms Being an avid Camogie fan, I would like to share with you, that Cork’s Camogie and Football Larry Finn legend Rena Buckley from Inniscarrra is retiring from inter-county. Rena has won 18 All-Ireland titles in football and camogie, captaining Cork to both crowns. A.10-time All-Star she is the most Trustees: decorated Gaelic Games player of all time, but work and personal commitments led her to walk away. Martin Hurley Cork will certainly miss her. Timothy Murphy We are having our first Young Rebel Networking Group meeting, this month and I urge all you Mary Power “Young Rebels” to come and support your fellow young future leaders. Prayers are also requested for our dear member Mary Driscoll, Olivene Hurley, and Brian Creedon. c Condolences d We are deeply saddened to report the passing of former member William (Billy) Naughton, on April 13, 2018 in Boynton Beach Florida. Billy was 85 years old. Billy was a native of Kilmallock, Co. Limerick and attended the Christian Brothers school in Charleville, Co. Cork. He worked for the Board of Education before retiring to Florida to enjoy his golden years in the sunshine. He is survived by his wife Mary Cotter Naughton, daughter Noreen, son John, and his grandchildren. Mary was the co-chair of the Association's 125th Anniversary journal. Mary's father, Henry Cotter, hailed from Passage West and was also a member of the Co. Cork Association. We extend our condolences to Mary, Noreen, John and the entire Naughton and Cotter families both in the U.S. and Ireland.     Roll of Honour Irish Athletics Champions 1861 - 2019 Comments, additions, corrections to Pierce O'Callaghan [email protected] & Cyril Smyth [email protected] as at December 2019 The Irish Champion Athletic Club (Irish Champions AC) was founded during late 1872/early 1873 and organised the first Irish Championships on Monday July 7, 1873 in College Park Dublin. These championships have been held every year since and are the longest running national championships in the world. The Irish Champions AC, then foundered quite rapidly, being wound-up in 1880/81. Thereafter the championship meeting was run by an ad hoc committee in 1881, and by the Dublin Athletic Club from 1882 to 1884. After several abortive attempts to establish a national governing body for athletics, two were formed over the winter months of 1884/85. First the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was formed not alone to encourage and administer athletics, but also to develop and foster the traditional Irish field sports of hurling and football, as well as handball. Their action galvanised the existing athletics "establishment" in Dublin who perceived the formation of the GAA - insofar as pertained to athletics as a usurpation, and so was formed, very soon after, the Irish Amateur Athletic Association (IAAA). The distinction between the two rival governing associations is often explained in purely political terms whereas, in reality, the situation is rather more complex; particularly since both organisations embraced a quite broad spectrum of political aspiration, so that once the initial hostilities subsided the majority of athletes, whatever their affiliations, seemed to have no philosophical problems competing in the promotions of both bodies, open meetings as well as championships.
