I am happy to have lived to see it functioning fully and so well received by the people of Tompkins County. Letter from Sherman Peer, dated February 2?, 19^9, to Mrs. John Vandervort, chairman of the trustees of the Tompkins County Public Library. Sherman Peer searched the records of the Cornell Library Association, many other written sources, and his own rich memories to write this history. A prominent Ithaca attorney who enjoyed writing and story-telling, Mr. Peer completed his work on it in 1964, when he was 81 years old. The epilogue was written by Mary Tibbets Freeman, and the manuscript was prepared for presentation at the formal dedication of the Tompkins County Library Building on April 20, 19&9. The historian also shaped the library's history by assisting in its successful rebirth as a public institution in its second century. He was convinced that the Cornell Public Library, operated since 1866 by the private Cornell Library Associa tion founded by Ezra Cornell, needed public funds for a new building and continuing support.

DICE is intended to generate cluster membership that may be used to categorize a population by individual risk level for a targeted outcome. Following the representation learning and clustering steps, we embed the objective function in DICE with a constraint which requires a statistically significant association between the outcome and cluster membership of learned representations. DICE further includes a neural architecture search step to maximize both the likelihood of representation learning and outcome classification accuracy with cluster membership as the predictor. To demonstrate its utility in medicine for patient risk-stratification, the performance of DICE was evaluated using two datasets with different outcome ratios extracted from real-world electronic health records. Outcomes are defined as acute kidney injury (30.4%) among a cohort of COVID-19 patients, and discharge disposition (36.8%) among a cohort of heart failure patients, respectively. Following the University’s transition to remote instruction and the postponement of Commencement due to the coronavirus pandemic, Alumni Affairs announced in late March that this year’s gathering would be virtual. “Initially there was some skepticism, particularly from those who had experienced an in-person Reunion,” notes Kate Freyer, director of Reunion and volunteer engage­ ment events. “It was hard to imagine those connections feeling the same way over a screen.” But by the end of the weekend, she says, the feedback was overwhelm­ ingly positive—and thanks to the virtual format, many alumni who wouldn’t have been able to travel to Ithaca for logistical or health reasons were able to participate. “While Cornellians certainly missed campus, I think this experience opened a lot of people’s eyes to the idea that connecting isn’t just in a place,” Freyer says.

Because of their pervasive effect, it is only natural that in a world increasingly consumed by celebrity obsession, important issues arising from celebrity tax evasion, whether criminal or not, are brought to the fore. Recently, this has been true of well-known individuals such as Wesley Snipes, Joe Francis, and Richard Hatch.' However, the publication of high-profile tax prosecutions is not a new phenomenon. In the 1920S the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) prosecuted Al Capone; in the197os Vice President Spiro Agnew faced tax evasion charges; and in the i98os Leona Helmsley was forced to spend time in jail for tax evasion! The difference between modem tax evaders and those of the late 9oos is that in the last two decades, the rise of the Internet and celebrity gossip magazines has made celebrities both more visible and more obvious embodiments of social values and norms.
