PROVENANCE NOTE

The items that comprise this collection were assembled from materials located in the Manhattan Sites Collections, now housed at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York. This collection was formed from two accessions: GEGR-00001 and GEGR-00039. Each item has been cataloged individually by the National Park Service.

Both accessions, GEGR-00001 and GEGR-00039, can be traced back to the transfer of Grant’s Tomb from the Grant Monument Association to the Federal Government. Resolutions, memorial books, banners, and sympathy letters, along with a variety of other Grant related ephemera, were deeded with the Tomb to the National Park Service on May 1, 1959.

Shortly after the death of Julia Dent Grant in 1902, the Grants’ son Col. Frederick Dent Grant gave the Grant Monument Association over three thousand memorial items and resolutions created during the General’s illness and following his death. A portion of those items form this collection, but there is little information concerning what happened to the bulk of them. These items were maintained by the Grant Monument Association until the transfer in 1959. Many of the resolutions and memorial books were used by the Grant Monument Association in exhibits and displays in the reliquary rooms at the Tomb over the years.1

HISTORICAL NOTE

Ulysses S. Grant is a prominent figure in 19th century American history. Grant served in the Infantry during the Mexican American War and as Commanding General of Union Armies during the American Civil War. He emerged from the war a hero, and was elected eighteenth President of the United States, serving two full terms. After his presidency, Grant traveled extensively, aided in international diplomacy and wrote personal memoirs that provide a respected historical account of his experiences in the Mexican-American War and American Civil War. Although his public life was riddled with controversy, Grant’s list of accomplishments and contributions to the politics and history of the United States during the late 19th century is immense, including his involvement in the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox, passage of the coinage act of 1873, the Civil Rights Act in 1875, and establishment of Yellowstone as the first National Park in 1872.

In 1884, while in the midst of drafting his personal memoirs, Grant was diagnosed with throat cancer. Grant’s health continued to deteriorate after the diagnosis and in the spring of 1885, Grant and his immediate family members retreated to a cottage in Mount McGregor, New York. The cabin was a peaceful place for Grant to finish his writing, rest and recuperate away from the city heat. News of his poor health was received with dismay by the American public. Many individuals and civic organizations sent resolutions to the Grant family with get-well messages, thoughts and prayers. On July 23, 1885, shortly after completing his memoirs, Ulysses S. Grant died.

In the weeks following Ulysses S. Grant’s death, American citizens and organizations reacted with a strong sense of grief and sympathy for the Grant family, through sympathy letters, resolutions and other acts of mourning. Private funeral services were held for the Grant family and close friends at the Mount McGregor house. His coffin was then taken to Albany where he lay in state at the State Capitol. The following day the coffin was taken to City Hall in New York City. Both instances attracted large crowds of visitors to pay their final respects to Grant. The funeral procession was held on August 8, 1885 in New York City. The procession was observed by over one million mourners and involved over sixty thousand marchers. The final portion of the procession included Grant’s interment in a temporary tomb in Riverside Park, as the establishment of the Grant Monument Association and talks of creating an ornate Tomb for Grant in Riverside Park began.

Grant’s body was placed in the completed tomb on Riverside Drive on April 17, 1897, ten days before the official dedication on April 27, 1897. Grant’s wife Julia Dent Grant was entombed alongside him following her death in 1902. Grant’s Tomb remains on a plot in Riverside Park, New York and is on the National Register of Historic Places, maintained by the National Park Service as the General Grant National Memorial.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection is comprised of individually cataloged memorial resolutions, including bound resolutions and memorial books, and sympathy letters, banners, and poems created in the months prior to, or immediately following, the death of Ulysses S. Grant in 1885. These items were sent to the Grant family in New York and passed on to the Grant Monument Association in 1902.

Resolutions, memorial books, banners, and sympathy letters in this collection document public reaction to the sickness and death of Ulysses S. Grant. They shed light on the importance of Ulysses S. Grant to American citizens at home and abroad and provide insight into the character of Grant as interpreted through the eyes of many veterans’ organizations, governing bodies and the general public in 1885. Many items created by federal, local, and state governments in the United States as well as abroad attest to Grant’s political reach not only in the United States, but across the globe. These ornately crafted items display the care and thought involved in their creation, and provide artistic interpretations of Grant and his life.

Poems present in this collection display the emotional sentiment expressed from an individual perspective in regards to Grant’s service to the country and his legacy.

Overall these memorial items provide evidence of the period of great sorrow and mourning experienced shortly before and following the death of Grant. They represent physical manifestations of grief and shed light on the genesis of the memorialization of Grant and his legacy as seen in the 19th century.

SERIES NOTES AND CONTENTS LIST

Series I: Resolutions and Memorial Books, 1885, undated

Extent: 16.5 linear feet

Arrangement: Items in both subseries are listed according to date of creation and stored according to size. Ascribed titles represent the group, organization or individual responsible for the creation of the resolution. Oversize resolutions can be found in map drawers 22 and 23; bound resolutions in record cartons 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Scope and Content: This series is comprised of resolutions, bound resolutions, banners, and memorial books created in honor of Ulysses S. Grant in 1885.

The term resolution refers specifically to a formal expression of opinion or will that has been agreed upon by an official body or group of individuals2 and then publicized. Resolutions in this series were created in official meetings and gatherings in which organizations and governing bodies agreed upon specific terms, produced official documents and forwarded them to the Grant family. Each resolution differs in terms of content and style. However, all of the resolutions in this series pertain to Ulysses S. Grant and the Grant family in some fashion.

The subjects of resolutions in this series include get-well expressions created upon the news of Grant’s worsening health in the months prior to July 1885, as well as expressions of sympathy and support for the Grant family in the months following his death. Examples of specific resolved acts in this series include mandatory closing of businesses on the day of Grant’s funeral, August 8, 1885, and the draping of storefronts in memorial bunting to honor Grant. Many organizations also resolved to display the national colors for specific periods of time in Grant’s memory and to fly the American flag at half staff.

Resolutions, bound and unbound, provide information about the life and legacy of Ulysses S. Grant as highlighted by the individuals and organizations that created them. These biographical sketches and memorials include descriptions of his presidency, accomplishments as soldier and general, and his overall character. Specific events highlighted in this series include a handwritten resolution from the Board of Indian Commissioners, which recounts Grant’s role in creating the Commission in 1869, and his overall respect and aid for marginalized races. A resolution from the Colored Citizens of Chicago, dated June 23, 1885 pays tribute to Grant and his involvement in the Civil War, specifically his role in ending slavery in the South. The restoration of Grant’s military rank of general on March 3, 18853 is referenced in a resolution from the 66th General Assembly of the Ohio Senate, from March 11, 1885, that expresses congratulations to Grant upon the restoration of his military rank, along with prayers for improved health.

Lesser known aspects of Grant’s early life are also referenced in these memorial items, specifically seen in a bound resolution from the National Tanners and Hide and Leather Dealers Association, that expresses sympathy for Grant’s death and discusses his time spent as a tanner apprentice, the same profession held by Grant’s father Jesse Root Grant (1794–1873).

The majority of resolutions in this series were created by organizations that arose out of the aftermath of the American Civil War, specifically veterans’ organizations including the Grand Army of the Republic, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, and the Woman’s Relief Corps. Memorial books and bound resolutions in many instances were created by governing bodies at the federal, state and local levels. Resolutions and memorial books by foreign governments and expatriates living abroad from areas including Western Europe, Australia and South America can also be found in this series.

Notable penmen responsible for the calligraphy and stylized writing found on some these resolutions include Daniel T. Ames, N.S. Beardsley, B.F. Brady, and Hamel & Ferguson.

Subseries A contains handwritten and printed resolutions in the form of large posters, banners, booklets or one-page documents; these items vary greatly in shape and size. Included is a resolution created by the French-Canadians of the city of Worcester, Massachusetts, written in French. Also contained is a resolution from the of Chicago, of which Grant was an active member, a resolution from the Knights of Pythias of the State of Pennsylvania, a resolution from the Order of the United American Mechanics and various resolutions from posts of the Grand Army of the Republic located throughout the United States.

Subseries B contains resolutions and memorial books that are bound. These items are largely ornate and decorative in terms of calligraphy and casing. Notable items in this subseries include a bound resolution from the Police Department of the City of New York, an oversize resolution from the Common Council of the City of New York, a memorial testimonial from the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Brooklyn, and a hand-painted memorial book from Citizens of the United States Resident in Australia. Also included is a bound velvet Birthday-Greeting book sent to Grant on what would become his last birthday, that includes the poem “Hail to the Chief, Hero of Appomattox” written in September 28, 1865 (after the end of the Civil War), that was then adapted as a tribute to the physically suffering Grant in the April of 1885.
