Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Monday, September 7th, is Labor Day, the traditional end of summer. It has been a summer unlike any in memory. The fall will likely be different as well, with many of our students going back to school virtually, and several of the fall sports that we enjoy being postponed. Nonetheless, the fall is a uniquely beautiful season, with cooler temperatures and the eventual changing of the colors of the tree leaves. The American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald writes: “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” (The Great Gatsby).

Labor Day was created by the American labor movement in the 19th Century, and, in the year 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the law making it a federal holiday. The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate the contributions of American labor to our nation.

The also has a long history of celebrating the dignity of work. The Church’s teachings on social justice began to develop with Pope Leo XIII’s landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum, written in the year 1891 during the industrial revolution. Pope Leo XIII advocated for the rights of workers, including their right to organize and to receive a fair wage.

In modern times, Saint John Paul II wrote two major encyclicals on social justice: Laborum Exercens (1981), and Centesimus Annus (1991). In these writings, Pope John Paul II notes that work has a great dignity because it is a part of God’s plan for humanity from the beginning of creation. Through work, human beings participate in God’s own creative activity. Work is a path by which we can become holy.

The focus of all Catholic social teaching is the dignity of the human person. In Centesimus Annus, Saint John Paul II emphasizes that people have priority over things. Atheism is the rejection of God that paves the way for people to treat their neighbor as an object instead of a person with God -given rights. The pope argues that atheism is behind the false view of the human person in Marxism and the false materialism of the West.

As we celebrate Labor Day this year, may we have a greater appreciation for the dignity of work. May the work that we do always respect others and give glory to God!

May God bless you and Mary keep you. Father Shenosky
