Have you ever wondered who built the trail or how the club got started? Evelyn Berg was a Girl Scout leader back in the ’60s and a member of the Peoria Historical Society. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed researching local history. Both of these interests were brought together with the founding of the Girl Scout Trail, the precursor of the Pimiteoui Trail. When Evelyn passed away several years ago, her daughter generously gave the club some of Evelyn's personal archives. Visit the club's website ( www.ptahike.org ) to read the transcripts of these archives. And check back to view additional postings that will be added later

EVENTS SCHEDULE

Event 2013-7, Saturday, April 13, 2013, 8:30 AM – Let's get together and hike 's largest State Forest, Sand Ridge, near the town of Manitou, this spring. The past one or two trips to Sand Ridge have been in the summer, so it will be great to see the seasonal differences. Sand Ridge State Forest has huge expanses of oak, hickory and pine trees, open fields and grasslands, and unique sand , making up a total of 7200 acres. This area has often been referred to as a forested island, due to the fact that it is different than the agricultural land that surrounds it, supporting plant and animal life more closely associated with southwest, than the midwest. In addition to the many acres of pines, other examples, regarding what makes this area different, include the badger, bladder pod, and especially the prickly pear cactus. We will be too early to see the prickly pear cactus flowers, but the plants should be present at the time of our hike. There are 44 miles of marked trails ranging in length from 1.5 to 15 miles, many of which are interconnected. I will scout out the trails and terrain to see which ones provide the greatest opportunity to see the diversity of the landscape. Please be prepared for a moderately strenuous hike. Let’s meet at the Pekin Riverfront Park for carpooling. Be sure to check out any specific updates as provided in a reminder that will be emailed to PTA members at the beginning of the week prior to the date of this event. Following our hike, we will drive into Manito and go to the Ironwood Restaurant for lunch, conveniently located next door to Willet's Winery. Hike Leader : Mark Klokkenga, 309-678-3827, [email protected]

The parking lot is between the Granite City restaurant and the bridge. There is plenty of room to park. We will ride the River Trail of Illinois (Carl "Bud" Schmitt Trail ). It is 100% asphalt paved. So, road- bikes will be ideal. The ride will be about a 20 mile round trip. Ride Leader: Brian Cunningham, 309-633-1224

We will focus on cleaning the litter on the PPD Rock Island Greenway going south from the library and make our way toward Springdale Cemetery. This part of trail is not paved yet. Some garbage bags and gloves will be provided by the Keep Peoria Beautiful organization. If you have litter picker\ grabber tools at home please bring them. Event 2013-14, Saturday, June 8, 2013 8:30 AM –IL River Bluff Trail (Service day)

3 Please join other Pimiteoui Trail Association members, assisting the Peoria Park District (PPD) build trail, clear brush, or complete other tasks on the Green Valley section of the Bluff Trail. The PPD recently acquired, through IDNR funding, the land necessary to build this segment of trail. The PPD refers to this construction project as Phase 3, as it is the third grant received for building the IRBT. The land lies south of I-474 (Rt. 6), and will eventually connect with Detweiller Park. From Rt. 6, the proposed trail will wind around to the south and east, and travels about two miles, as it follows the contour of the hillsides and land, before arriving at the Green Valley Camp. Peoria Park District Project Planner, Michael Friberg has been contacted and is aware of our club's interest in helping build this trail. As June 8 approaches, I will contact him again to get more specific details regarding what work we will be doing. This event is bound to be great fun, while at the same time helping to develop our namesake trail, the IRBT, formally the Pimiteoui Trail. Let's meet at Forest Park Nature Center to carpool and follow each other to the work location. Be sure to check out any specific updates as provided in a reminder that will be emailed to PTA members at the beginning of the week prior to the date of this event. Event Coordinator: Mark Klokkenga 309-678-3827, [email protected]

EVENT REPORTS

Event 2013-1, Sunday, January 6. 2013, 2:00 PM – Coal Miners Park, Pekin Despite temperatures dipping into the 20s, 14 hikers gathered at Mineral Springs Park on Sunday, Jan. 6, to hike. The paved trail started just beyond the parking lot and was easygoing except for a few icy patches along the way. We crossed Parkway Dr. and entered Coal Miners Park where the trail circled around some game fields then followed a wide, wooded ravine to Allentown Road. There we turned around and made a return trip back to our cars. Several hungry hikers then went to Monical's to warm their insides with pizza and pasta.

4 Attendees: Cindy Alexander (leader), Chris Sweet, Linda Kent, Sam Kent, Eric Hutchison, Brian Cunningham, Tim May, Bonnie Jackson, John Jackson, Barb Gurtler, Homer Gurtler, Paula Lewis, Susan Hood. Guest: Mark Bradley. Hike Leader: Cindy Alexander

Event 2013-2, Sunday, January 20, 2013, 2:00 PM, Bradley Park This eventful hike began at Jubilee State Park, and ended at Bradley Park in Peoria. When we arrived at Jubilee, we were met with roadblocks and signage which told us that the park was closed to non hunters. The park manager told us it was the last day of deer season for firearms, and too dangerous for us to be hiking. I think he thought, with all the parked cars, and so many people milling around, that there was going to be a PETA protest, because he seemed a little defensive at first. Fortunately, there was a backup hike which the hike leader had been planning for later in the year, so all seventeen of us drove to Bradley Park

We had a special guest on the hike, Nick Schnelle, who is a photographer with the Peoria Journal Star. The newspaper published an article about the club on March 21, 2013. Nick followed us through the park, and took many pictures of us with our winter jackets and our rosy cheeks. This is his first job out of college, so we wish him well in Peoria. Bradley Park is small, so we trekked up and down, and poked into odd corners that most people never see, covering almost the whole park in an hour and a half. The day was cloudy and the temp was 29 degrees, but the landscape sheltered us from any wind, so it was a comfortable hike. Afterwards most of the group retired to Doug and Toni Lais' house for pizza and beverages, where we both truly enjoyed having the house filled with the cheerful noise and warmth of friends. We look forward to hosting more of you in the future. Next time, we'll attempt Jubilee again...after a call to the DNR. Attendees: Doug and Toni Lais, John and Bonnie Jackson, D. and Janice Atkinson, Homer and Barb Gurtler, Cindy and Rob Alexander, Kathy John, Chris Sweet, Brian Cunningham, Susan Hood, Paula Lewis, Eric Hutchison, and guest Nick Schnelle. Hike Leaders: Doug & Toni Lais

Event 2013-3, Saturday, February 2. 2013, 8:30 AM, Chautauqua Wildlife Refuge and - Eagle Days - Meet in Pekin The trip to Chautauqua (CNWR) proved to be exciting for the nature lovers that attended. It was a good sign when the ten Pimiteoui Trail Club members and guests, who met at Pekin Riverfront Park, spotted numerous eagles, perched in trees and flying along the Illinois River, to begin their day. Leaving Pekin, the group traveled to the refuge headquarters, located 1 mile south of the village of Goofy Ridge. After arriving at the refuge we were greeted with refreshments and given an informal presentation by the site manager on migratory waterfowl and eagle activity at Chautauqua and Emiquon Refuges, and the history and significance of CNWR. The refuge manager also talked about the best places to observe eagles and herons on the self guided auto tour, which we took, driving 7.5 miles around the gravel road that encircles the huge wetland lake, called The South Pool. Next we stopped at The Shed, which is 1 mile south of the Chautauqua Refuge, in the town of Buzzville, for lunch. After comparing notes, it was determined that we observed at least 15 eagles, 2 or 3 Great Blue Herons, one huge beaver, and other wildlife during our wetlands tour. Our next stop was Dickson Mounds Museum, where the group took in a live raptor presentation by the World Bird Sanctuary, from St. Louis, in the museum's auditorium. The excitement of the afternoon was seeing a European Owl, a Barred Owl, a Peregrine Falcon, a Vulture, an Eagle, and others, hearing the stories of how they had been rescued from the wild, and watching in amazement as they flew from one perch to another, at altitudes close to audience members heads. In summary, everyone had a great time. Attendees: Laura VanRiper, Cindy and Rob Alexander, Tom Hieser, Susan Hood, Dave Grebner, Mary Greenhood, Sheila Leininger (guest), and Ryan Atkinson. (guest) Hike Leader : Mark Klokkenga, 309-678-3827

5 Saturday, February 16, 2013, 6:00 PM, Annual Membership Meeting; Kep’s Sports Bar, Washington, IL The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Kathy John, which she called “Running Wild in Kenya”. Kathy traveled to the African continent to run the Kenya Safaricom Marathon & she shared her photographs of the wildlife, scenery and the people she encountered during her adventure. We enjoyed cake to celebrate the 30 th anniversary of the Pimiteoui Trail Association. Cindy Alexander recounted that a portion of trail was developed along the Peoria Riverfront in the late 1970’s with the intent to gradually extend the trail along the riverfront and onto the river bluff. In 1983, the portion from Grandview Drive to Forest Park Nature Center was completed, named the Pimiteoui Trail, and our club was formed to encourage further development and public use of the trail. The evening included door prize drawings, Dusty Boots Awards to recognize participation and a new Blue Blaze Award in recognition of volunteering. Cindy Alexander provided a recap of the year’s outings. Brian Cunningham provided an update of the PPD’s Rock Island Greenway and Mark Klokkenga reported on Phase 3 of the Illinois River Bluff Trail and the Rocky Glen property. Bonnie Jackson invited members to join in the camping/hiking trip to Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park on Rend Lake in Southern Illinois, which is scheduled for June 15-21, 2013. The club members present voted in favor of the PTA contributing funds to other trail-related organizations or events as deemed appropriate by the Board. An Election of Officers was held and resulted in a continuation of Officers currently serving; Cindy Alexander as President, Brian Cunningham as Vice President, Linda Kent as Treasurer and Susan Hood as Secretary. Event Coordinators: Cindy Alexander and Susan Hood

Event 2013-4, Sunday, February 24, 2:00 PM, Grandview Drive We were greeted by a clear, sunny, 35 degree day as we gathered at the base of the Peoria Heights lookout tower for our tour of aptly named Grandview Drive. Seventeen members and seven guests in all - most guests reported finding us in the Journal Star. We swapped greetings and made firm plans to consume the cake that Cindy Alexander graciously brought along - held over from last night's annual banquet (30 year club anniversary cake). Our views along the hike were indeed grand, thanks to the clear air and the leafless trees between us and our beautiful Illinois River valley. On a clear day, you can see forever (well, at least to the Mossville water tower). Grandview's stately estates and landscaping was also a hit. I particularly enjoyed seeing the huge sycamore trees in winter - their white and green mottled trunks gleaming in the sun. Grandview park provided our turn-around point - we decided to pass on Grandview's steep switchbacks that snake down to route 29. Our walk back to Tower Park was all uphill, but (thanks to Cindy) we had cake waiting at our finish line. Post-hike carb loading was resumed at TNT's down the street. Attendees: Cindy & Rob Alexander, Susan Hood, John & Bonnie Jackson, Paula Lewis, Laura Van Riper, Brian Cunningham, Chris Sweet, Cindy DeCrane, Dave & Mosey Grebner, Jerry Gegel, Rod & Janet Sieth, Doug Lias Guests: Jack & Toni Chambers, Peter Vermeil, Jim Fletcher, Sandy Grilly, Vicky & Robbie Mitchell, Lane Geebon Hike Leader : Eric Hutchison, 309-688-7038

Event 2013-5, Saturday, March 9, 10:00 AM, Funk’s Grove near Bloomington, IL A stormy start of the day turned very respectable as the club ventured to Funk's Grove near Bloomington. We hiked both the south and north portions of the area. The trails were often covered in snow and some mud but were fine. One day later with the heavy rain would have made the trails a quagmire. A high-water creek crossing in the south end helped to make things interesting. Midway, the nature center held our interest with animal pelts and displays. Heading north, we tried unsuccessfully to crash wedding preparations at the historic Funks Grove church. We just wanted to see the inside of the church for religious reasons. We were an adventurous group, especially with the high turnout on a questionable day. At the end, some went to the Funk's Grove store to see “sirup”

6 vats and to buy some “sirup”. Many fled to Busy Corner in Goodfield for a good field lunch. Those who stayed home missed a wonderful day all around. Attendees : Joan Bonnett, Toni Lais, Doug Lais, John Jackson, Bonnie Jackson, Jerry Gegel, Joyce Gegel, Chris Sweet, Susan Hood, Laura VanRiper, Andy Shull, Cheryl Shull, Sharon Baird, Norma Frieden, Doug Frieden, and Lisa from Bloomington Hike Leader : Jay Meinrich

Event 2013-6, Saturday, March 16, 2013, 9:45 AM, Rocky Glen in West Peoria Pimiteoui Trail Association members and guests made up 16 of the total of approximately seventy people that showed up at Jimmy's Bar on March 16th, the meeting point for those participating in hikes to Rocky Glen, the unique rock formation now owed by the City of Peoria. The monthly hikes, sponsored and organized by the Friends of the Rocky Glen (FORG), have become more and more popular, as people hear about this unique geological treasure, located in their own backyards, and want to see it for themselves. To reach the trailhead, it was necessary to carpool to reduce the number of vehicles on Kickapoo Creek Road, as parking is limited. After arriving we separated into smaller groups so that there was one FORG leader in each, to provide information about the site. Our group learned about the geology of the terrain leading up to the Rocky Glen formation, and Rocky Glen itself, from Ed Stermer, the geology teacher at ICC. Ed also told us about the history of mining in the area, as evident from the mine shaft and the old bridge remnant present. We walked right by the Crescent Mine shaft, were coal mining occurred for 14 years around 1905 - 1919. Once reaching the Rocky Glen formation, we saw evidence of several rock carvings thought to have been made in the late 1800's and early 1900's by people that were trying to form unions related to coal mining. Ed also told us about the geology of the sandstone that formed Rocky Glen. Everyone had a chance to take pictures, walk around and look at Peoria's newest "soon to be" public park, before heading back to their cars. Attendees : John Jackson, Homer and Barb Gurtler, Doug Lais, Dave Grebner, Chris Sweet, Tammy Vinson, (guest) Joan Bonnett, Cindy De Crane, Larry and Brenda Shay, Michael Villen (guest), Vicki Mitchell (guest), and Stan Lamont (guest). Hike Leader/Coordinator: Mark Klokkenga
