E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Fifty heterodont bivalve species, belonging to 35 genera, 15 families and six orders, from the Cenomanian–Coniacian Cotinguiba Formation of the Sergipe Basin, north-eastern Brazil, are systematically described and figured. Thirty-three species are recorded from the basin for the first time. The new species Callucina (C.) itaporangensis sp. nov. from the lower Cenomanian is characterised by its heart-shaped to sublanceolate and slightly asymmetric lunule, narrow, shallow and elongated escutcheon, widely spaced commarginal ribs crossed by faint radial striations, rod-like anterior adductor muscle scar (separated ventrally from the pallial line) and straight postero-dorsal and posterior margins with an angular junction. The fauna shows little endemism, which indicates that the larvae were long-lived and possessed a high dispersal potential. The fauna occurred across a wide geographic area, from the Middle East, northern Africa and southern Europe to western Africa and the Pacific rim of South America, with some taxa also known from India. The bio- geographic pattern suggests that many groups migrated via the trans-Saharan seaway, which connected the southern Tethys with the incipient South Atlantic Ocean. P aub 3:121-142, 1978 FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF DON AX HANLEY ANUS PHILIPPI 1847 (DONACIDAE - BIVALVIA) Walter Narchi Department o f Zoology University o f São Paulo, Brazil ABSTRACT Donax hanleyanus Philippi 1847 occurs throughout the southern half o f the Brazilian littoral. The main organ systems were studied in the living animal, particular attention being paid to the cilia ry feeding and cleasing mechanisms in the mantle cavity. The anatomy, functioning of the stomach and the ciliary sorting mechanisms are described. The stomach unlike that of almost all species of Donax and like the majority of the Tellinacea belongs to type V, as defined by Purchon, and could be regarded as advanced for the Donacidae. A general comparison has been made between the known species of Donax and some features of Iphigenia brasiliensis Lamarck 1818, also a donacid. INTRODUCTION Very little is known of donacid bivalves from the Brazilian littoral. Except for the publications of Narchi (1972; 1974) on Iphigenia brasiliensis and some ecological and adaptative features on Donax hanleyanus, all references to them are brief descrip tions of the shell and cheklists drawn up from systematic surveys. Beach clams of the genus Donax inhabit intertidal sandy shores in most parts of the world. Donax hanleyanus Philippi 1847 is one of four species occuring through out the Brazilian littoral. Its known range includes Espirito Santo State and the sou thern Atlantic shoreline down to Uruguay (Rios, 1975). According to Penchaszadeh & Olivier (1975) the species occur in the littoral of Argentina. 122 Walter Narchi The species is fairly common in São Paulo, Parana and Santa Catarina States whe re it is used as food by the coastal population (Goffeijé, 1950), and is known as “na- nini” It is known by the name “beguara” (Ihering, 1897) in the Iguape region, but not in S.

This study was funded by the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior, through an interagency agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce, as part of the Alaska Outer Continental Shelf Environment Assessment Program (OCSEAP). SUMMARY OF OBJECTIVES, CONCLUSIONS, AND IMPLICATIONS WITH RESPECT TO OCS OIL AND GAS DEVELOPMENT Little is known about the biology of the invertebrate components of the shallow, nearshore benthos of the bays of Kodiak Island, and yet these components may be the ones most significantly affected by the impact of oil derived from offshore petroleum operations. Baseline information on species composition is essential before industrial activities take place in waters adjacent to Kodiak Island. It was the intent of this investigation to collect information on the composition, distribution, and biology of the epifaunal invertebrate components of two bays of Kodiak Island. The specific objectives of this study were: 1) A qualitative inventory of dominant benthic invertebrate epifaunal species within two study sites (Alitak and Ugak bays).

Chama cerinorhodon has hitherto been misidentified as Chama fragum Reeve, Reeve, 1846, from its superficial morphological characters. Howev 巴r, it is here reveal 巴d that this this species is sufficiently distinct from true C. fragum in shell mineralogy and shell structure to to warrant separate status. Chama cerinorhodon has a calcitic outermost shell layer in addition to to aragonitic inner and median shell lay 巴rs, whereas C. jトagum has only aragonitic inn 巴r and outer outer shell layers. Chama cerinorhodon is closely related to the eastern Pacific species Chama arcana arcana Bern 紅 d, 1976, and Chama pellucida Broderip, 1835, in shell morphology, mineralogy, and and structure. Keywords: Keywords: Chama, new species, calcitic lay 巴r Introduction Introduction The superfamily Chamoidea is represented by the single family Chamidae Lamarck, 1809, with with approximately 70 living species world-wide (Bernard, 1976). The taxonomy is confused at not not only species but also higher levels (Matsukuma, 1996). Ecologically, almost all chamids are sessile sessile in the epifaunal benthos and usually attach themselves to a hard substratum by one or the other other valve. Some exceptions exist, such as the secondary free living genus Arcinella Schumacher, 1817, 1817, of Central America, but they too undergo a brief phase of cementation at an early stage of of life.

(Calcareous alga, Dasycladales) from the Cretaceous of Serbia, Montenegro and the Northern Calcareous Alps, (Gosau Group, Austria) RAJKA RADOI^I]1 & FELIX SCHLAGINTWEIT2 Abstract. The new species of the genus Neomeris – Neomeris mokragorensis sp. nov. described in this paper from western Serbia originates: from the Albian of Mokra Gora (the succession transgrading on the serpenti- nite) and from the Turonian of the Skrape`–Kosjeri} area (the succession transgrading on the Carboniferous). The presence of this species has been noted in the Turonian of the Kukes and in the Santonian of the Meto- hija Cretaceous Unit (Mirdita Zone). In the surrounding of Podgorica (Dinaric Carbonate Platform, Montenegro), the same species previously was presented as Neomeris cf cretacea STEINMANN. Well preserved Neomeris speci- mens from the Turonian to the Santonian strata of the Northern Calcareous Alps (Gosau Group, Austria) pre- viously described as Neomeris circularis BADVE & NAYAK, is assigned to Neomeris mokragorensis sp. nov. Neomeris mokragorensis is characterized by a thin loosed skeleton formed only around ampullae, by which, besides the form of the ampullae, this species is clearly distinct from Neomeris cretacea (Steinmann). ZOOLOGISCHE MEDEDELINGEN UITGEGEVEN DOOR HET RIJKSMUSEUM VAN NATUURLIJKE HISTORIE TE LEIDEN (MINISTERIE VAN CULTUUR, RECREATIE EN MAATSCHAPPELIJK WERK) Deel 53 no. 13 25 oktober 1978 THE MARINE MOLLUSCAN ASSEMBLAGES OF PORT SUDAN, RED SEA by M. MASTALLER Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Lehrstuhl für Spez. Zoologie Bochum, West-Germany With one text-figure and one table ABSTRACT This study summarizes field observations and collections of the molluscan fauna of the coastal and offshore reefs in the area of Port Sudan, Central Red Sea. In spite of the fact that some families of this group were described from several areas of the Red Sea, there exists only little information on the entire faunal composition of this region. 282 species of Amphineura, Gastropoda, and Bivalvia, collected and studied in nine localities are listed according to their habitats. Moreover, descriptions of the prominent members of typical molluscan assemblages are given for 13 habitats and microhabitats which differ in their morphological structures and in their hydrographic and physiographic conditions. Emphasis is placed on further studies on the trophic interactions within certain habitats. INTRODUCTION Although there is a considerable number of taxonomie literature on some molluscan families in the Indo-West-Padfic (Abbott, i960; Burgess, 1970; Cernohorsky, 1967; Habe, 1964; Kira, 1962; Powell, 1964; Rosewater, 1965), there is comparatively scarce information for the Red Sea. After the exten• sive surveys and descriptions of Issel, 1869, Hall & Standen, 1907, Jickeli, 1874, Shopland, 1902, and Sturany, 1901, 1903, in more recent times only a few studies were published on the entire faunal composition of molluscs in this region. Most of these publications deal with certain families, sometimes they also give information about their zoogeographical distribution in the Red Sea: Thus the cypraeids seem to yield the best information on their occurrence throughout the region (Foin, 1972; Mienis, 1971b; O'Malley, 1971; Schilder, 1965).
