We at the MSO have had such fun in preparing for tonight’s concert, and I am certain that you will enjoy yourselves this evening. Classical Hits is intended as a launch pad for you, our guest, to dive into the world of orchestral music. Through the MSO’s diverse offering of contemporary, family-friendly concerts and educational workshops for all ages, we aim to perform classical music for all Melburnians. Tonight is another example of our commitment to accessible music. You are sure to recognise much of tonight’s repertoire, and hopefully it will tempt you to return to see the MSO again soon. Of course, tonight would not have been possible without the generosity and effort of Anthony Pratt. The consummate professional and a joy to work with, Anthony’s love of classical music—and of the MSO—is on show for you tonight, with a specially- curated selection of works. I extend my utmost thanks to Anthony for his patronage of the MSO and for his commitment to Melbourne’s arts community. Enjoy the concert. Sophie Galaise Managing Director Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Photo courtesy Daniel Aulsebrook 2 A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER And I’ve chosen familiar themes and tunes which most of us have heard, or recognise from popular culture. Except that we’re presenting the original versions, albeit in shortened form, because that’s what the great composers wanted us to enjoy. The MSO is one of Melbourne’s cultural treasures, and the Pratt Foundation is proud of our long- standing support, especially for the orchestra’s programs for young people. So it’s a personal privilege to sponsor this concert, and I’m grateful to everybody who’s made it happen. There’s something grand and I’m particularly indebted to Managing wonderful about a symphony orchestra Director, Sophie Galaise, who that you can only fully appreciate “live” enthusiastically agreed to my idea for in a concert hall. • Project Tosca Overview
PROJECT TOSCA OVERVIEW Project Tosca is a large, ambitious project in which Opera Queensland will work with seven Queensland communities to find and train local performers for a 2020 tour of Tosca. Tosca is an opera by Giacomo Puccini, which premiered 120 years ago in Rome. The story follows the powerful Tosca, a famous opera singer who is devoted to the painter Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the tyrannical Chief of Police, has his own plans for her. What ensues is a gripping tale of lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder that careens at breakneck pace. The production is set in 1970 Italy and takes a step back into a world of iconic style and lush glamour at a time of dramatic political and social change. Opera Queensland stars Antoinette Halloran, Rosario La Spina and José Carbó shine alongside the Company’s Principal Artists, Community Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble, conducted by Dane Lam. Aspiring performers from seven communities – Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Toowoomba and Gold Coast – will have the opportunity to audition for a coveted spot. During Project Tosca, around 400 successful applicants will participate in a program of free professional training in singing, stagecraft and Italian language skills before taking to the stage in their local theatres alongside Queensland’s best singers and with the support of an ensemble of musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Auditions to find 40 adult and 16 children chorus members in each community will occur throughout March, April and May 2020, with Tosca regional tour commencing on Saturday 8 August in Cairns and closing at the Gold Coast on Saturday 29 August.

MEDIA RELEASE – MARCH 2015 Grand Finale for 3 Years Work Opera Australia with Crown Resorts Foundation and Parramatta Park present the Western Sydney Community Choirs Nearly 300 singers from all across west and south-west Sydney will share the stage at The Crescent, Parramatta Park on March 15 to celebrate the culmination of their journey which began with Opera Australia in 2012. The Community Choirs project is an initiative to give amateur singers access to professional conductors and venues to improve their craft and deepen their understanding of opera. The project has seen the formation of the Western Sydney Community Choirs, which have gone on to perform at the Sydney Opera House in 2012 and 2014. The third and final performance will bring the talents of the Western Sydney Community Choirs closer to home with a one-off, free concert at Parramatta Park. Along with Penrith Symphony Orchestra, the near 300-strong Choir from 13 communities will perform a night of opera hits under the stars. This significant free public performance in Western Sydney has been enabled through a grant from the Crown Resort’s Foundation’s Western Sydney Arts Initiative, in recognition of the valuable outcomes that Opera Australia’s Community Choir program achieves. Opera Australia’s Simon Kenway has been the conductor of the Western Sydney Community Choirs since its inception and will lead the choirs on the night along with four guest artists from Opera Australia - Ayse Göknur Shanal (Soprano), Sian Pendry (Mezzo), Rosario La Spina (Tenor) and Shane Lowrencev (Baritone). “Originally, the Communities Choirs project was about improving access to opera and providing a free mechanism for singers to improve their skills under professional tuition,” says Simon.

Previously the composer Giuseppe Verdi had rejected the offer to write an inaugural hymn for the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 but the Khedive (Ismail Pasha, the Viceroy of Egypt for the Ottoman Empire and a fan of all things European) was determined to commission a mag- nificent opera to open the new opera house in Cairo. Verdi wouldn't do this either, so the new opera house opened with Verdi's existing Rigoletto in 1869. A director/librettist Camille du Locle persuaded Verdi to take on a future commission with a little psychology 101. He told him that if Verdi didn't want the job, German composer Richard Wagner might be interested and would probably do a very good job with it! He also told Verdi that the Khedive would be willing to give him almost anything: "If you were to ask for a pyramid (the biggest one, of course) as a bonus, he's just the sort of person who might give it to you." Verdi wrote Aida for the Cairo Opera House and the opera premiered there on December 24, 1871.
