Unfortunately it hasn’t been done since. When a little known contract miner and thespian, Bruce Edwards, heard of this about three years ago he saw the perfect opportunity to mix two passions of his to launch the most unique, maybe insane, productions Australia has heard of. Underground Opera; literally! The Underground Opera Company was started to produce professional Opera, Classical Music and Broadway concerts throughout Australia. Catering more so for the mining and construction indus- tries, UOC provides an opportunity for communities to experience some of the finest performers that Australia has to offer in a venue that is as exciting as the performances, without the expense of an air- fare to Sydney and the ticket price of the Opera House. In an endeavour to provide these communities with such productions, UOC has been working feverishly on securing support from the Mining and Construction industries to source appropriate venues and ensure the ticket prices can remain as afforda- ble as possible. Mr Edwards says “ I have lived and worked in these communities for the last fifteen years where there has been little or no entertainment, not only for the miners themselves but for their wives, families and the communities supporting these areas. To be able to experience the excitement and enjoyment that UOC’s productions offer, I believe, would be greatly received by anyone within ear-shot. The experience of goingunderground to hear this is something special.” UOC will be staging their inaugural production, “Alchemy”, at the Prophet Gold Mine in Kilkivan (30km from Gympie) on September 15 and 16 this year. Whilst this first show is not underground it is in a gold mine none the less and boasts a gold pour and discussion during the interval. Featured in this production are Mark Jowett, Glenn Lorimer, Melissa Thomas and Kaitlin Oliver accompanied by the sensational John Woods on Piano. Extended biographies are attached. The audience will be privileged to hits from musical theatre and opera productions such as Les Misera- bles, Jekyll and Hyde, Cats, The Barber of Seville, Carmen and Lakme, climaxing with the sensational Nessun Dorma from Turnadot. The production has been carefully put together to cater for the most ardent opera buff and enthuse those experiencing this music for the first time. These productions are only possible with the support of our sponsors,SANDVIKand ATLAS COPCO. Due credit must be given to them for, their commitment to the development of their greater communities, their broader views of cultural diversity and their support for the Arts in Aus- tralia in general. UOC and our audiences thank you. Tickets for this performance are only $55 with a 10% discount for concessions and group bookings. Seating is limited and expected to fill very quickly. • Project Tosca Overview
PROJECT TOSCA OVERVIEW Project Tosca is a large, ambitious project in which Opera Queensland will work with seven Queensland communities to find and train local performers for a 2020 tour of Tosca. Tosca is an opera by Giacomo Puccini, which premiered 120 years ago in Rome. The story follows the powerful Tosca, a famous opera singer who is devoted to the painter Cavaradossi but Scarpia, the tyrannical Chief of Police, has his own plans for her. What ensues is a gripping tale of lust, betrayal and cold-blooded murder that careens at breakneck pace. The production is set in 1970 Italy and takes a step back into a world of iconic style and lush glamour at a time of dramatic political and social change. Opera Queensland stars Antoinette Halloran, Rosario La Spina and José Carbó shine alongside the Company’s Principal Artists, Community Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble, conducted by Dane Lam. Aspiring performers from seven communities – Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Toowoomba and Gold Coast – will have the opportunity to audition for a coveted spot. During Project Tosca, around 400 successful applicants will participate in a program of free professional training in singing, stagecraft and Italian language skills before taking to the stage in their local theatres alongside Queensland’s best singers and with the support of an ensemble of musicians from the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Auditions to find 40 adult and 16 children chorus members in each community will occur throughout March, April and May 2020, with Tosca regional tour commencing on Saturday 8 August in Cairns and closing at the Gold Coast on Saturday 29 August.

  • Grand Finale for 3 Years Work Opera Australia with Crown Resorts Foundation and Parramatta Park Present the Western Sydney Community Choirs
MEDIA RELEASE – MARCH 2015 Grand Finale for 3 Years Work Opera Australia with Crown Resorts Foundation and Parramatta Park present the Western Sydney Community Choirs Nearly 300 singers from all across west and south-west Sydney will share the stage at The Crescent, Parramatta Park on March 15 to celebrate the culmination of their journey which began with Opera Australia in 2012. The Community Choirs project is an initiative to give amateur singers access to professional conductors and venues to improve their craft and deepen their understanding of opera. The project has seen the formation of the Western Sydney Community Choirs, which have gone on to perform at the Sydney Opera House in 2012 and 2014. The third and final performance will bring the talents of the Western Sydney Community Choirs closer to home with a one-off, free concert at Parramatta Park. Along with Penrith Symphony Orchestra, the near 300-strong Choir from 13 communities will perform a night of opera hits under the stars. This significant free public performance in Western Sydney has been enabled through a grant from the Crown Resort’s Foundation’s Western Sydney Arts Initiative, in recognition of the valuable outcomes that Opera Australia’s Community Choir program achieves. Opera Australia’s Simon Kenway has been the conductor of the Western Sydney Community Choirs since its inception and will lead the choirs on the night along with four guest artists from Opera Australia - Ayse Göknur Shanal (Soprano), Sian Pendry (Mezzo), Rosario La Spina (Tenor) and Shane Lowrencev (Baritone). “Originally, the Communities Choirs project was about improving access to opera and providing a free mechanism for singers to improve their skills under professional tuition,” says Simon.

Its history spans 200 years and, like its meandering path through the countryside, there have been many twists and turns along the way. Super Slow Way: A Rhapsody to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is a celebration of the history, people and stories of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal through music, using a series of poems specially written by celebrated Yorkshire poet Ian McMillan. The canal was ofcially opened in Blackburn in October 1816 when, for the frst time, the journey could be made from the coalfelds of Yorkshire, through the weaving mills of Lancashire to the port of Liverpool, bringing work and industry to the towns along the way, making them centres of the Industrial Revolution and the towns we see today.
