10 El Morro April 2016 2016 Army Emergency Chaplain’s Corner Relief Annual Campaign “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” The 18th century poet, Alexander Pope, extended a Latin saying describing the human condition into one that points to an action that rises above normal behavior. As human beings, we make mistakes no matter how smart or good we are. It just goes with the turf. But there is a remedy to the human condition which Pope so succinctly presents: forgiveness. If you ever wanted to be a part of something bigger than yourself, more enduring, even eternal: you could forgive. Well what does it mean to forgive? Most of us do not use the language of economics in our daily activities, but we know something about debt. To “forgive” is to give up claim to something to which we are entitled. The same is true of the Spanish word, perdón, which means precisely the same thing. Human nature tells us when we are injured by another, we should be compensated. The Old Testament adage of “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” reflects our basic sense of justice. It is an economic argument and to forgive is to be deprived. So in order to forgive, one must have a sense of abundance, to know that there is more to life than this one compensation. It is to see the richness included in forgiving that could offer more than the injury claim itself. Shortly after the devastating attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11, a group of people who were profoundly affected by the attacks Gold Star Spouses’ Day advocated for a space in the structure that would rise in place of the ruins. It would be called a “Garden of Forgiveness” modeled after one in Beirut, Lebanon, where people could reflect on their feelings of hurt and entitlement in an effort to make peace with themselves and ultimately, forgive. The idea and the advocates themselves were attacked in the media. Despite the fact that most had lost a family member in the attack, others wrote them off as naïve and even questioned whether they had actually loved their husbands, wives, sons, and daughters who perished when the buildings collapsed. It was a frustrating experience and, while there is a memorial on site, there is no Garden of Forgiveness. Some said, we are just not ready. Maybe that’s the biggest obstacle in forgiving. Others will think we are fools. Who could forgive the Nazi guard who made thousands suffer? Who could forgive the leadership at NASA that insisted on flying despite engineers warning that the cold weather would cause the O rings to fail and lead to the destruction of the Spaceshuttle? Who could forgive the Germanwings co-pilot who locked the cockpit door and flew the 144 passengers and six crew slowly and intentionally into a French mountain. Fort Buchanan Survivor Outreach Service (SOS) office will Who could forgive the terrorists who murdered innocent people in Paris and Brussels?
