Volume 5 of BOOM! Slings & Arrows The hunt for Modeus may be over but ultimate chaos is still at hand. With the Plutonian still on the loose, The Paradigm find themselves with little time and less options. Have the Paradigm unleashed something they cannot control? I fell head over heels in love with Irredeemable after reading Volume 1, a feeling that only grew considerably with the incredible second volume. Especially because the premise is based on the idea that a super being is necessarily equipped with the right psyche to be a super hero. Needless to say, I had been waiting anxiously for this third volume to finally arrive in the UK. Weeks I have waited with bated breath for this and when it finally landed on my doorstep two days ago, I whooped. Having finally read it, I can say now:. And then, there is Cary, the guy who beat the Incorruptible Vol 2 to a pulp and who seems to be getting way creepy. But not as creepy as finally figuring out exactly where Modeus — his arch-enemy — has been hiding. In Incorruptible Vol 2 words: same old, same old. The feeling that I had after reading this volume was: is that all? It is still pretty much set up for something. But there is nothing very new anymore and I really need this series to get moving. Furthermore, a few things downright bothered me. An alien. All of a sudden, I am no longer reading a super-hero exclusive club. I need to take into consideration other dimensions, and planets too. She is married to Gilgamos and at one point her entire arc is about how bad she feels for loving Incorruptible Vol 2 but cheating on him with the Plutonian. Incorruptible Vol 2 now. Despite my cool name, power and outfit I am only really Incorruptible Vol 2 so that the male characters can fight about who is better in bed. And finally 3 I am underwhelmed by how Cary is turning out to be another…. We find out that he is extremely powerful after his twin dies, and he is able to almost defeat The Plutonian. But the power is going to his head and it only serves to demonstrate in a very aggressive way that absolute power corrupts absolutely. But the thing is, when you make it so every single time, you make it about power and not about people. So yeah, the honeymoon is over Incorruptible Vol 2 that is not necessarily a bad thing. Now the real thing starts, past the infatuation towards Incorruptible Vol 2 stable relationship. In spite the aforementioned issues, I still very much enjoyed this volume and I have high hopes that the story will pick up. When The Plutonian turned his back on humanity, Max Damage decided to step up. Why did I read this Incorruptible Vol 2 After discovering IrredeemableI just had to give Incorruptible a go since they are both set in the same world and happen at the same time. As soon as I finished reading Irredeemable Vol. Incorruptible Vol 2 is super Incorruptible Vol 2 and invulnerable, nothing can piece his skin. There is a cool twist: his power or ability increases the long he is awake — he is the most vulnerable as he awakes and in that one hour window he can touch, smell, and taste but these three senses disappear as the hours go by. He used to hang with his gang of criminals and his partner and lover is a 16 year old girl aptly named Jailbait. What has possessed him to believe he can do it, I do not know. Basically, Max is like, the anti-Plutonian. But no, not really. He may be Incorruptible now but he has done some pretty shitty things in his time. In that sense, if we think that The Plutonian is irredeemable surely Max should be too. Because if Max can have a second chance, then well, so can The Plutonian right? Redemption: is it merely by making decision that we get it? Yes, Max is acting like a hero Incorruptible Vol 2 of a vigilante variety but are these actions enough? Furthermore, who gets Incorruptible Vol 2 decide what the general populace needs? That sounds pretty patronising to me. But it also points Incorruptible Vol 2 a certain humanisation of a villain. Perhaps who needs to be saved is Max himself and the change he undergoes is his and his alone. This is a man who is damaged but who also shows little remorse about the things he did in the past — at least for now. In any case, inasmuch as I felt that Tony was never meant to be a hero in the first place, perhaps Max Damage was never meant to be a villain. Only time will tell. What I love about both these series are these questions that I get to ask when reading them. I believe they both work together really well too and I love the artwork by both Peter Krause and Jean Diaz. Ana Grilo is a Brazilian who moved to the UK because of the weather. No, seriously. Amid a limited media landscape that otherwise consisted of radio, film, newspaper, and magazines, comics served as a useful tool in engaging readers of all ages to get behind the war effort. The aims of this research was to examine a sampling of messages put forth by comic book publishers before and after American involvement in World War II in the form of fictional comic book stories. In this research, it is found that comic book storytelling/messaging reflected a theme of American isolation prior to U.S. involvement in the war, but changed its tone to become a strong proponent for American involvement post-the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This came in numerous forms, from vilification of America’s enemies in the stories of super heroics, the use of scrap, rubber, paper, or bond drives back on the homefront to provide resources on the frontlines, to a general sense of patriotism.

IRREDEEMABLE has taken the comic book industry by storm by daring to ask the question: what if the worlds greatest hero decided to become the worlds most savage villain? What happens to a world when a savior betrays it…and who can stop him? A twilight of the superheroes-style story that examines the nature of good and evil from the writer of KINGDOM COME and EMPIRE! 3.5 starsThis series started off with and incredible jolt, but has sagged of late. It would have been better as five or six trades instead of ten. This rebounds a bit from the previous two volumes. The ancillary characters are more interesting - the troubled brainiac hero Qubit teams up with Modeus, an incredibly interesting villain, to try and find where the aliens have imprisoned the Plutonian. Their dialogue is by far the most interesting aspect of this volume. There are only a few issues per trade.

  • Surveillance, Social Order, and Gendered Subversions
SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns. Accessed 16 July 2017. !iii Acknowledgements This project owes its existence to a great many people who supported and encour- aged me throughout the process, asked insightful and necessary questions, took the time to read early chapter drafts, let me take the time to pet dogs and read non-Bat-comics, and were just generally the best friends a thesis-writer could hope for.

Mughals at War: Babur, Akbar and the Indian Military Revolution, 1500 - 1605 A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Andrew de la Garza Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: John F. Guilmartin, Advisor; Stephen Dale; Jennifer Siegel Copyright by Andrew de la Garza 2010 Abstract This doctoral dissertation, Mughals at War: Babur, Akbar and the Indian Military Revolution, examines the transformation of warfare in South Asia during the foundation and consolidation of the Mughal Empire. It emphasizes the practical specifics of how the Imperial army waged war and prepared for war—technology, tactics, operations, training and logistics. These are topics poorly covered in the existing Mughal historiography, which primarily addresses military affairs through their background and context— cultural, political and economic. I argue that events in India during this period in many ways paralleled the early stages of the ongoing “Military Revolution” in early modern Europe. The Mughals effectively combined the martial implements and practices of Europe, Central Asia and India into a model that was well suited for the unique demands and challenges of their setting. ii Dedication This document is dedicated to John Nira. iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Professor John F. Guilmartin and the other members of my committee, Professors Stephen Dale and Jennifer Siegel, for their invaluable advice and assistance. I am also grateful to the many other colleagues, both faculty and graduate students, who helped me in so many ways during this long, challenging process.

  • Sports and the Rhetorical Construction of the Citizen-Consumer
THE SPORTS MALL OF AMERICA: SPORTS AND THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITIZEN-CONSUMER Cory Hillman A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2012 Committee: Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor Dr. David Tobar Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Clayton Rosati Dr. Joshua Atkinson © 2010 Cory Hillman All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Michael Butterworth, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate from a rhetorical perspective how contemporary sports both reflect and influence a preferred definition of democracy that has been narrowly conflated with consumption in the cultural imaginary. I argue that the relationship between fans and sports has become mediated by rituals of consumption in order to affirm a particular identity, similar to the ways that citizenship in America has become defined by one’s ability to consume under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. In this study, I examine how new sports stadiums are architecturally designed to attract upper income fans through the mobilization of spectacle and surveillance-based strategies such as Fan Code of Conducts. I also investigate the “sports gaming culture” that addresses advertising in sports video games and fantasy sports participation that both reinforce the burgeoning commercialism of sports while normalizing capitalism’s worldview. I also explore the area of licensed merchandise which is often used to seduce fans into consuming the sports brand by speaking the terms of consumer capitalism often naturalized in fan’s expectations in their engagement with sports. Finally, I address potential strategies of resistance that rely on a reassessment of the value of sports in American culture, predicated upon restoring citizens’ faith in public institutions that would simultaneously reclaim control of the sporting landscape from commercial entities exploiting them for profit.
