Calgary Sketch Club April and May 2021 Message from the President “It is important to express oneself ... provided the feelings are real and are taken from your own experience.” ~ Berthe Morisot And now warmer weather invites us outside, into the fields and gardens to experience nature, gain an impression, paint a record of our sensations. Welcome to a summer of painting. Whether you take your photos and paint in the studio or make the time to sit amidst the dynamic landscape, get out and experience the real colours, shapes, and shifting light. Your paintings will be the better for having authentic emotional content. This spring we were able to enjoy a club meeting dedicated to Plein Aire painting, a technical painting method that supported the development of the Impressionism move- ment. While some people may be familiar with the men who worked in impressionism, Monet, Manet, Gaugin, and so on, few dwell on the contribution of women painters to the development and furthering of painting your sensations, impressions, and expe- riences. After viewing work by Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzales, Marie Bracquemond and Lilly Cabot Perry, we see a sizable contribution to the oevre from the depths of meaning and exciting brushwork of these pioneering artists. The social cultural milleau of 1874 Paris, it was difficult for women to find equal footing or even acceptance as artists. And no matter that the art could stand beside that of any con- temporary man or woman, it was sometimes not enough. However, time has allowed a fuller examination of their work and its place in the impressionist canon. -

Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Painting
FIRST COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF RENOIR’S FULL-LENGTH CANVASES BRINGS TOGETHER ICONIC WORKS FROM EUROPE AND THE U.S. FOR AN EXCLUSIVE NEW YORK CITY EXHIBITION RENOIR, IMPRESSIONISM, AND FULL-LENGTH PAINTING February 7 through May 13, 2012 This winter and spring The Frick Collection presents an exhibition of nine iconic Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, offering the first comprehensive study of the artist’s engagement with the full-length format. Its use was associated with the official Paris Salon from the mid-1870s to mid- 1880s, the decade that saw the emergence of a fully fledged Impressionist aesthetic. The project was inspired by Renoir’s La Promenade of 1875–76, the most significant Impressionist work in the Frick’s permanent collection. Intended for public display, the vertical grand-scale canvases in the exhibition are among the artist’s most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of Impressionism. The show and accompanying catalogue draw on contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir’s full-length figure paintings as well as their reception by critics, peers, and the public. Recently-undertaken technical studies of the canvases will also shed new light on the artist’s working methods. As part of the great campaign to break through to reality and express essentials, Paul Cezanne had developed a technique of painting in almost geometrical terms and concluded that the painter "must see in nature the cylinder, the sphere, the cone:" At the same time, the influence of African sculpture on a group of young painters and poets living in Montmartre - Picasso, Braque, Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Derain, and Andre Salmon - suggested the possibilities of simplification or schematization as a means of pointing out essential features at the expense of insignificant ones. Both Cezanne and the Africans indicated the possibility of abstracting certain qualities of the subject, using lines and planes for the purpose of emphasis. But if a subject could be analyzed into a series of significant features, it became possible (and this was the great discovery of Cubist painters) to leave the laws of perspective behind and rearrange these features in order to gain a fuller, more thorough, view of the subject. The painter could view the subject from all sides and attempt to present its various aspects all at the same time, just as they existed-simultaneously. We have here an attempt to capture yet another aspect of reality by fusing time and space in their representation as they are fused in life, but since the medium is still flat the Cubists introduced what they called a new dimension-movement. -

Social Studies Research and Practice www.socstrp.org Past Looking: Using Arts as Historical Evidence in Teaching History Yonghee Suh Old Dominion University This is a comparative case study of how three high school history teachers in the U.S.A. use art in their practice. The following research question was investigated: How do secondary history teachers incorporate the arts—paintings, music, poems, novels, and films—in their teaching of history and why? Data were collected from three sources: interviews, observations, and classroom materials. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the data. Findings suggest these teachers use the arts as historical evidence roughly for three purposes: First, to teach the spirit of an age; second, to teach the history of ordinary people invisible in official historical records; and third, to teach, both with and without art, the process of writing history. Two of the three teachers, however, failed to teach historical thinking skills through art. Keywords: history, history instruction, art, interdisciplinary approach, thinking skills, primary sources. Introduction Encouraging historical thinking in students is not a new idea in history education. Since the turn of the 20th century, many historians and history educators have argued that history consists of not only facts, but also historians’ interpretation of those facts, commonly known as the process of historical thinking, or how to analyze and interpret historical evidence, make historical arguments, and engage in historical debates (Bain, 2005; Holt, 1990; VanSledright; 2002; Wineburg, 2001). Many past reform efforts in history education have shared this commitment to teach students to think historically, in part by being engaged in the process of historical inquiry (Bradley Commission on History in Schools, 1988; National Center for History in the Schools, 1995). -

It is related to extremely emotional states of mind such as distress, agony, and anxiety. One of the most characteristic aspects of expressionism is the destruction of artistic boundaries in the arts. The expressionists approach the unified artistic entity with a point of view to influence the human subconscious. At that time, the expressionists were active in many arts. In this context, Wassily Kandinsky had a strong influence on Arnold Schoenberg. Schoenberg‟s attention to expressionism in music is related to personal tragedies such as his marital crisis. Schoenberg solved the issues of extremely emotional content with atonality, and devoted himself to painting works such as „Visions‟ that show his anger and uneasiness. He focused on the expression of psychological depth related to Unconscious. Both Schoenberg and Kandinsky gained their most significant artistic development almost at the same time while struggling to find their own voices, that is, their inner necessity, within an indifferent social environment. Both men were also profound theorists who liked to explore all kinds of possibilities and approached human consciousness to find their visions from the inner world. -

As the novel revolves around the world of postmodern visual arts and brings this subject into the literary world, it necessitates an interdisciplinary approach, which not only brings the two different academic disciplines of arts together for a critical appreciation, but also creates a new aesthetic experience in the reader, wherein visual arts is seen through the lens of literature, which helps foreground the hidden patterns and motives behind the art work, and the literary work is appreciated with a greater knowledge and understanding of the practices in and theories of the modern and postmodern art. -

The Denver Art Museum to Present National Debut of Her Paris: Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism Through more than 80 paintings, the fall 2017 exhibition will explore the artistic production of women in Paris between 1850-1900, including Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Bracquemond DENVER—March 16, 2017—The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is proud to present the national debut of Her Paris: Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism, a traveling exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts (AFA), from Oct. 22, 2017 to Jan. 14, 2018. The exhibition surveys the remarkable artistic production of women in Paris during the second half of the 19th century, a time of great social, cultural and artistic change, revealing the breadth and strength of their achievements. Her Paris: Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism will feature more than 80 paintings by 37 women artists from across Europe and America, who migrated to Paris to further their artistic careers.
