KPOP E-2020-04 Bra-Ket Representation of the Inertia Tensor U-Rae Kim, Dohyun Kim, and Jungil Lee∗ KPOPE Collaboration, Department of Physics, Korea University, Seoul 02841, Korea (Dated: June 18, 2021) Abstract We employ Dirac's bra-ket notation to define the inertia tensor operator that is independent of the choice of bases or coordinate system. The principal axes and the corresponding principal values for the elliptic plate are determined only based on the geometry. By making use of a general symmetric tensor operator, we develop a method of diagonalization that is convenient and intuitive in determining the eigenvector. We demonstrate that the bra-ket approach greatly simplifies the computation of the inertia tensor with an example of an N-dimensional ellipsoid. The exploitation of the bra-ket notation to compute the inertia tensor in classical mechanics should provide undergraduate students with a strong background necessary to deal with abstract quantum mechanical problems. Abstract tensor systems and diagrammatic representations J¯anisLazovskis September 28, 2012 Abstract The diagrammatic tensor calculus used by Roger Penrose (most notably in [7]) is introduced without a solid mathematical grounding. We will attempt to derive the tools of such a system, but in a broader setting. We show that Penrose's work comes from the diagrammisation of the symmetric algebra. Classical Physics: Spacetime and Fields Nikodem Poplawski Department of Mathematics and Physics, University of New Haven, CT, USA Preface We present a self-contained introduction to the classical theory of spacetime and fields. This expo- sition is based on the most general principles: the principle of general covariance (relativity) and the principle of least action. The order of the exposition is: 1. Spacetime (principle of general covariance and tensors, affine connection, curvature, metric, tetrad and spin connection, Lorentz group, spinors); 2. Fields (principle of least action, action for gravitational field, matter, symmetries and conservation laws, gravitational field equations, spinor fields, electromagnetic field, action for particles). In this order, a particle is a special case of a field existing in spacetime, and classical mechanics can be derived from field theory. Therefore the numerical treatment of such tensors requires a special representation technique which characterises the tensor by data of moderate size. These representations (or formats) should also support operations with tensors. Examples of operations are the addition, the scalar product, the componentwise product (Hadamard product), and the matrix-vector multiplication. In the latter case, the ‘matrix’belongs to the tensor space of Kronecker matrices, while the ‘vector’is a usual tensor. In certain applications the subspaces of symmetric or antisymmetric tensors are of interest. For instance, fermionic states in quantum chemistry require antisymmetry, whereas bosonic systems are described by symmetric tensors. The appropriate representation of (anti)symmetric tensors is seldom discussed in the literature. Of course, all formats are able to represent these tensors since they are particular examples of general tensors. However, the special (anti)symmetric format should exclusively produce (anti)symmetric tensors. -

Appendix A The Language of Differential Forms This appendix—with the only exception of Sect.A.4.2—does not contain any new physical notions with respect to the previous chapters, but has the purpose of deriving and rewriting some of the previous results using a different language: the language of the so-called differential (or exterior) forms. Thanks to this language we can rewrite all equations in a more compact form, where all tensor indices referred to the diffeomorphisms of the curved space–time are “hidden” inside the variables, with great formal simplifications and benefits (especially in the context of the variational computations). The matter of this appendix is not intended to provide a complete nor a rigorous introduction to this formalism: it should be regarded only as a first, intuitive and oper- ational approach to the calculus of differential forms (also called exterior calculus, or “Cartan calculus”). The main purpose is to quickly put the reader in the position of understanding, and also independently performing, various computations typical of a geometric model of gravity. The readers interested in a more rigorous discussion of differential forms are referred, for instance, to the book [22] of the bibliography. Let us finally notice that in this appendix we will follow the conventions introduced in Chap. 12, Sect. 12.1: latin letters a, b, c,...will denote Lorentz indices in the flat tangent space, Greek letters μ, ν, α,... tensor indices in the curved manifold. Determining the dynamics of fields in curved backgrounds remains however a complicated task because of the highly intricate partial differential equations in- volved, especially when the space metric exhibits no symmetry. In this article, we provide –in a pedagogical way– a general formalism to determine this dynamics at the semi-classical order. To this purpose, a generic expression for the semi-classical propagator is computed and the equation of motion for the probability four-current is derived. Those results underline a direct analogy between the computation of the propagator in general relativistic quantum mechanics and the computation of the propagator for stationary systems in non-relativistic quantum me- chanics. Investigating the behavior of those fields in the semi-classical approximation is a promising alternative to numerical studies, allowing accurate predictions for many phenomena including the Hawking radiation process [1, 2, 3, 4] and the primordial power spectrum [5, 6]. -

TENSORS (DRAFT COPY) LARRY SUSANKA Abstract. The purpose of this note is to define tensors with respect to a fixed finite dimensional real vector space and indicate what is being done when one performs common operations on tensors, such as contraction and raising or lowering indices. We include discussion of relative tensors, inner products, symplectic forms, interior products, Hodge duality and the Hodge star operator and the Grassmann algebra. All of these concepts and constructions are extensions of ideas from linear algebra including certain facts about determinants and matrices, which we use freely. None of them requires additional structure, such as that provided by a differentiable manifold. Sections 2 through 11 provide an introduction to tensors. In sections 12 through 25 we show how to perform routine operations involving tensors. In sections 26 through 28 we explore additional structures related to spaces of alternating tensors. Our aim is modest. We attempt only to create a very structured develop- ment of tensor methods and vocabulary to help bridge the gap between linear algebra and its (relatively) benign notation and the vast world of tensor ap- plications. We (attempt to) define everything carefully and consistently, and this is a concise repository of proofs which otherwise may be spread out over a book (or merely referenced) in the study of an application area. Many of these applications occur in contexts such as solid-state physics or electrodynamics or relativity theory. Each subject area comes equipped with its own challenges: subject-specific vocabulary, traditional notation and other conventions. These often conflict with each other and with modern mathematical practice, and these conflicts are a source of much confusion. -

Quantum Information Processing manuscript No. (will be inserted by the editor) Two-spinors, oscillator algebras, and qubits: Aspects of manifestly covariant approach to relativistic quantum information Marek Czachor Received: date / Accepted: date Abstract The first part of the paper reviews applications of 2-spinor methods to rela- tivistic qubits (analogies between tetrads in Minkowski space and 2-qubit states, qubits defined by means of null directions and their role for elimination of the Peres-Scudo- Terno phenomenon, advantages and disadvantages of relativistic polarization operators defined by the Pauli-Lubanski vector, manifestly covariant approach to unitary rep- resentations of inhomogeneous SL(2,C)). The second part deals with electromagnetic fields quantized by means of harmonic oscillator Lie algebras (not necessarily taken in irreducible representations). As opposed to non-relativistic singlets one has to dis- tinguish between maximally symmetric and EPR states. The distinction is one of the sources of ‘strange’ relativistic properties of EPR correlations. As an example, EPR averages are explicitly computed for linear polarizations in states that are antisymmet- ric in both helicities and momenta. The result takes the familiar form p cos 2(α β) ± − independently of the choice of representation of harmonic oscillator algebra. Parameter p is determined by spectral properties of detectors and the choice of EPR state, but is unrelated to detector efficiencies. Brief analysis of entanglement with vacuum and vacuum violation of Bell’s inequality is given. The effects are related to inequivalent notions of vacuum states. Technical appendices discuss details of the representation I employ in field quantization. In particular, M-shaped delta-sequences are used to define Dirac deltas regular at zero. -

Such operations are able to generate a variety of p-forms with the even-order derivatives of the p- form. To do this, we first investigate the properties of the operators, such as the Laplace-de Rham operator, the codifferential and their combinations, as well as the applications of the arXiv:1909.09921v2 [gr-qc] 23 Mar 2020 operators in the construction of conserved currents. On basis of two general p-forms, then we construct a general n-form with higher-order derivatives. Finally, we propose that such an n-form could be applied to define a generalized Lagrangian with respect to a p-form field according to the fact that it incudes the ordinary Lagrangians for the p-form and scalar fields as special cases.
