Lutheran Flavors: LCMC One new Lutheran church body is the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). This church body was officially started in 2001 and is now the 4th largest Lutheran church body in the United States, right after the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), LCMS, and WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod).

Who are they?

In August of 1999, the ELCA adopted the (CCM), which put them in full fellowship with the Episcopal Church. Because some of the Episcopal beliefs were contrary to those held by Lutherans, this decision set in motion many congregations wishing to either reform or leave the ELCA. The WordAlone Network was formed within the ELCA to try and reform the church body. Many congregations joined The WordAlone Network, but when they felt they were unable to reform the ELCA, they left and formed the LCMC in 2001. The WordAlone Network still exists within the ELCA. However, the LCMC is now a separate church body from the ELCA. Today the LCMC has over 800 congregations, many of which joined the church body by leaving the ELCA. Since a number of the LCMC congregations are located in the Upper Midwest, many of their official meetings have been held right here in Minnesota.

What do they believe?

The LCMC considers themselves “less liberal” than the ELCA, but not as “conservative” as the LCMS. Because the LCMC has its roots in the ELCA, they operate with a similar view of Scripture. While they have a very high view of and respect for Scripture, they still believe the Bible merely contains God’s Word and not that the Bible is God’s Word. As a result, they do “permit” women to be ordained but do not “require” it. In other words, individual congregations can choose to either allow women to serve as or to stick to Biblical definition of the Ministry and only ordain men.

The LCMC “draws the line” and distinguishes itself from the ELCA on the issue of homosexuality. The LCMC maintains that according to God’s Word, homosexuality is a sin. As a result, they do not allow homosexual individuals to become pastors. In August of 2009, the ELCA decided to allow openly gay or lesbian individuals to become pastors. As a result, many congregations left the ELCA to join the LCMC. In fact, after the ELCA’s decision to affirm homosexuality, the number of congregations in the LCMC jumped from about 230 to over 800!

Daily Bible Reading—

Starting this month, we are going to begin a “Bible Memory Verses” series. We are going to walk through the entire Bible and look at just a few key verses in each book. My challenge to you is to try and memorize these verses. Each day will only have a very short reading so it will be easier to memorize. Feel free to read the context around each of these important verse(s) to better understand them. One suggestion is to write the verse(s) on a piece of paper and carry it around in your pocket throughout the day. To help you prepare for worship, the readings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be the readings for the next Sunday. On each Sunday, there is no Bible reading listed since we will have time together in God’s Word in worship and Bible study. -Pastor August 1 Genesis 1:1 16 Genesis 12:3 2 Genesis 1:26-27 17 Isaiah 56:1, 6-8 3 Isaiah 55:1-5 18 Romans 11:1-2, 13-15, 28 -32 4 Romans 9:1-13 19 Matthew 15:21-28 5 Matthew 14:13-21 20 Worship 6 Worship 21 Genesis 15:6 7 Genesis 2:16-17 22 Genesis 18:18 8 Genesis 3:15 23 Genesis 26:4 9 Genesis 6:5 24 Isaiah 51:1-6 10 Job 38:4-18 25 Romans 11:33-12:8 11 Romans 10:5-17 26 Matthew 16:13-20 12 Matthew 14:22-33 27 Worship 13 Worship 28 Genesis 49:10-12 14 Genesis 8:21 29 Exodus 20:3 15 Genesis 9:16 30 Exodus 20:7 31 Jeremiah 15:15-21

A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life • www.lutheransforlife.org

Theme: The Kingdom of heaven, what is it worth?

Scripture: “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!" Matthew 13:45-46 (NIV)

The Price Is Right There is a television show called "The Price Is Right." Have you ever seen it? It has been on television for more than fifty years! The contestants on the show are shown an item and then they try to guess how much the item costs. The one who guesses closest to the actual price without going over wins the prize. Let’s pretend we are playing "The Price Is Right."

Here is a package of cookies. Oreo cookies! Yum, yum! On the back of the package there is a tag with the price of the cookies. We will see how close you can come to guessing the price without going over the correct price.

If you think that the price of this package of cookies is MORE than $4.00, raise your hand. No, if you raised your hand, you are out of the game because these cookies do not cost more than $4.00.

If you think the price of this package of cookies is LESS than $2.00, raise your hand. If you raised your hand, you are out of the game because these cookies cost more than $2.00.

If you think the price of these cookies is MORE than $3.00, raise your hand. If you raised your hand, you are still in the game. This package of cookies does cost more than $3.00.

Next, I am going to give you a price, If I call out the price that you think is the right price of the cookies, raise your hand.

$3.39 - No, you're out of the game.

$3.49 - No, you're out of the game.

$3.59 - No! You're out!

$3.69 - Yes! These cookies cost $3.69. If your hand is up, you are a winner! You would be the winner of the cookies, and I am sure that you would want to share them with the children when this Bible story is over.

Oreo cookies are good, but $3.69 is a lot of money for a package of cookies, isn't it? Are they worth it? Perhaps there is another package of cookies that would be just as good for less money. Every day, we have to make choices about the value of things. We ask ourselves, "How much am I willing to pay?"

Jesus once told a story about a man who found a treasure which someone had hidden in a field. He was so happy that he immediately went and sold everything he had and bought the field so that the treasure would be his. (Matthew 13:44)

Jesus told about another man who went in search of fine pearls. When he found a pearl that he thought was the very best, he sold everything that he had so that he could buy the pearl. (Matthew 13:45-46)

These men both found something that they thought was worth giving everything they owned so that they could have it. Do you know what this thing was that Jesus was talking about? He wasn't talking about buried treasure or beautiful pearls, he was talking about the kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is the greatest treasure one could ever desire. It is more precious than silver, gold, or jewels. That is why Jesus calls us to give up all that we have and follow him. Is that too great a price? I don't think so. In fact, I would say, "The Price is Right!"

Father, nothing we have can compare to life in the kingdom of heaven. Amen.
