  • The Psychological Landscapes of Michelangelo Antonioni (1912–2007) a Centenary Tribute
The Psychological Landscapes of Michelangelo Antonioni (1912 – 2007) A Centenary Tribute David Gariff La Notte, 1961 (Photofest) National Gallery of Art 4 David Gariff 5 The Psychological Landscapes of Michelangelo Antonioni (1912 – 2007) A Centenary Tribute The subject of my films is always born of a landscape, of a site, of a place I want to explore. A film you can explain in words is not a real film. — Michelangelo Antonioni Landscape is important to Michelangelo Antonioni. His films explore both an interior psychological terrain as well as the physical geography of nature and man-made structures and spaces. The complex dialogue between these two realms of thought and existence bestows upon his films a richness — a depth — that is uniquely his own. Antonioni is the epitome of an auteur filmmaker. Of course the very aspects of Antonioni’s auteur style that many celebrate are seen by others as the source of an inaccessible opaqueness. Emerging from this basic interior/exterior dichotomy are also a complex range of secondary tensions and interac- tions between words and images, men and women, love and sex, mankind and the environment, nature and architecture, the individual and society, humanism and technology, action and stasis, engagement and alienation — ultimately, between being and nothingness. Any work of art can and perhaps must be approached through both its intrinsic and extrinsic perspectives. Those qualities most relevant to the intrinsic revolve around a work’s purely formal characteristics. The formalist language of An- tonioni’s early films L’Av ve ntu ra (1960), La Notte (1961), and L’Eclisse (1962), often discussed as a trilogy, was new to the 1960s.

  • POST-PHENOMENOLOGICAL ETHICS and the CINEMA Brian K
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SEEING AND THE SEEN: POST -PHENOMENOLOGICAL ETHICS AND THE CINEMA Brian K. Bergen -Aurand, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Orrin N. C. Wang Comparative Literature Program What is the re lationship between cinema and ethics, especially an elusive ethics more concerned with responding to alterity than with establishing moral order? Seeing and the Seen addresses this question by demonstrating how three seemingly unambiguous cinematic moments (from nations with totalitarian histories) are structured by ambiguity and aporia. These uncertain structures evoke non-assimilative, non-totalizing ethical responses that counter monolithic interpretations of cinema. Previously, skeptical approaches to cinema have not focused on ethics. They have relied upon hermeneutic techniques to “interpret” elements and then discuss their relevance. Their concerns have been ontological and epistemological. Using the post -phenomenological thought of Emmanuel Lev inas and Jacques Derrida, I argue, however, that skepticism connects cinema to an ethics of response. Chapter One introduces the ideas of post -phenomenological ethics, skepticism, and cinema, to show how their interrelationship actually challenges traditio nal views, such as Levinas’s that see art as unethical. Chapter Two analyzes narrative absence and the ethics of alienation in Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’avventura . I compare ontological and ethical readings of this film to argue against interpreting it as tragic. The final caress between the film’s protagonists is a metaphor for cinematic representations of ethical response. Chapter Three discusses the ethics of pornography in films by Pedro Almodóvar, who shows how pornography and non-pornography remain interdependent. Focusing on cinematic iterability, I demonstrate how pornographic and non-pornographic tropes oscillate between the two genres, rendering their borders uncertain.

This haunting film is a portrait of a drained journalist, played by Jack Nicholson, whose deliverance is an identity exchange with a dead man. The film was shot on location and takes Nicholson on an incredible journey through Africa, Spain, Germany and England. As with all of Antonioni’s work, however, there is another dimension. From beginning to end we are witnessing a probing study of the human condition. The protagonist’s fate reflects each individual’s own private thoughts about real and/or imagined destiny. The climax of the film, alone – a final sequence lasting seven minutes and taking eleven days to shoot is truly a synthesis of the movie and a tribute to the director’s art. Antonioni, in talking about his motion picture, says: “I consider The Passenger my most stylistically mature film. I also consider it a political film as it is topical and fits with the dramatic rapport of the individual in today’s society.” The Passenger brought together two of the screen’s most exciting personalities, Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider, who had become an overnight sensation opposite Marlon Brando in “Last Tango in Paris.” The Passenger is based on an original story by Mark Peploe and was filmed from a screenplay by Peploe, Peter Wollen and Antonioni.

A former critic, Antonioni quickly established himself with a striking series of features notable for their visual elegance, narrative subtlety and fascination with people striving to find satisfaction in the modern world. This season offers audiences an opportunity to discover the work of this titan of European art-house cinema. There will be screenings of acclaimed films such as L’avventura (1960), L’eclisse (1962), Blow up (1966), Zabriskie Point (1970) and The Passenger (1975), the latter of which will be re-released in selected cinemas by the BFI on Friday 4 January. A highlight of the extensive events programme will be a number of onstage appearances from actor and assistant director Enrica Fico Antonioni, the director’s widow, who will introduce screenings of Red Desert (1964) and Identification of a Woman (1982) and take part in a Q&A following a screening of Beyond the Clouds (1995). She will also introduce a shorts programme of films from 1983-2004 many of which she collaborated on with Antonioni. During the season the BFI Shop will exclusively stock My Antonioni, a new publication featuring texts by Michelangelo Antonioni and edited by Carlo Di Carlo, who was a key collaborator and friend of the director. The season will boast a rich and varied events programme that will allow audiences to explore Antonioni’s work in a myriad of ways.

  • Appendix 1: Short Introduction to Film Study
Appendix 1: Short Introduction to Film Study The next few pages offer an alphabetical list of topics often used in the critical evaluation of film with sample questions to aid in the critical discussion.1 Acting/Actors/Stars The cinema has long been driven by the visual appeal of its actors. Acting styles have changed since the silent days from the pantomime of the dive to the preference for nonpro- fessionals in the neorealist period to the present close connection between television, new media, and film. Silent-era actors in particular were universally popular because of the lack of linguistic barriers in their performances. Over the decades the personas of certain actors has even become identified with national, cultural, and class identities as well as with the style of living and attitudes in various time periods. In Italy, actors such as Alberto Sordi and Marcello Mastroianni were widely identified with the basic character traits of the Italian populace as were female stars such as Sophia Loren, Monica Vitti, or Anna Magnani. What type of acting style is used (nonprofessionals, method acting, theatrical, star persona)? Audience Film industries, including Italy, have periodically changed the type of films they produce in response to changes in target audiences. In the United States for example, Hollywood film production was targeted toward a female audience until the 1960s when the target audience became increasingly younger and male. In Italy, production in the 1960s and 1970s and thereafter introduced entertainment (art cinema, erotically charged cinema) not available on television because of censorship codes. What was the intended audience of the film? How was the film received when released? How has the film aged? Camera techniques Film theorists such as Christian Metz and Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote of the ability of shot selection to provide a language for film.2 The image on the screen has been filmed through the eye of a camera, which approaches its subject from certain angles and movements.
