MEDIA RELEASE TransLink launches historic new bus service RapidBus brings faster, more frequent service to eight Metro Vancouver communities January 6, 2020 COQUITLAM, B.C. – TransLink launches RapidBus on four routes – bringing customers up to 20 per cent faster bus service with higher frequencies, fewer stops, dedicated bus lanes, bus priority changes to intersections, and all-door boarding. RapidBus provides a more reliable bus service that can move more than 10,000 people per hour at peak times. The new service is made possible through investments from Phase One of the Mayors’ Vision, the Government of Canada, and the Province of BC. “We’re stepping up our bus game,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “RapidBus is a crucial part of improving the region’s bus service through the Mayors’ Vision. Downtown Vancouver Local Bus Service Review: Phase 1 Consultation Summary The purpose of this report is to provide a summary of what the City of Vancouver and TransLink heard from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders during the first phase of consultation for Downtown Vancouver Local Bus Service Review (DBSR), which occurred between June 21, 2013 and July 15, 2013. Project Context & Goals The City of Vancouver and TransLink are undertaking a Downtown Vancouver Local Bus Service Review to develop a vision for the downtown bus network for the next five years. Downtown Vancouver is a dynamic and evolving area where people from all over the region travel to, from and within every day. The Downtown population has more than doubled over the past twenty years with most of its growth occurring in the neighbourhoods east of Granville Street, such as Yaletown, Downtown South and along False Creek. In addition to these changes in land use and population, a number of transportation infrastructure changes have been made or proposed that offer challenges and opportunities for the downtown bus network such as; the Canada Line, exploration of the 800-Block of Robson Street as a permanent plaza, potential changes to the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts and surrounding areas, and the proposed move of the Vancouver Art Gallery and potential for a new plaza in the 600-block of Cambie Street. The DBSR will build upon, and be informed by, the goals and policies of the City of Vancouver's adopted Transportation 2040 Plan, and will supplement the Vancouver/UBC Area Transit Plan (ATP) to inform the ongoing management of the transit network.

Things to Do in Vancouver
Stanley Park Stanley Park is a 1,001-acre public park that borders the downtown of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada and is almost entirely surrounded by the waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay. The park has a long history and was one of the first places to be explored in the city. The land was originally used by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before British Columbia was colonized by the British during the 1858 Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. For many years after colonization, the future park with its abundant resources would also be home to non-aboriginal settlers. It was named after Lord Stanley, a British politician who had recently been appointed governor general. Unlike other large urban parks, Stanley Park is not the creation of a landscape architect, but rather the evolution of a forest and urban space over many years. Most of the manmade structures today were built between 1911 and 1937 under the influence of Superintendent W.S. Rawlings. Additional attractions, such as a polar bear exhibit, aquarium, and miniature train, were added in the post-war period. Much of the park remains as densely forested as it was in the late 1800s, with about a half million trees, some of which stand as tall as 76 metres (249ft) and are up to hundreds of years old. Thousands of trees were lost (and many replanted) after three major windstorms that took place in the past 100 years, the last in 2006. Significant effort was put into constructing the near-century-old Vancouver Seawall, which draws thousands of residents and visitors to the park every day.

Suggestions from “Be Part of the Plan” E-Consultation, May 9-22 Cycling Infrastructure o Bicycle roads, i.e. turn Heather Street into a bicycle-only road. o Bike lanes separated from cars and pedestrians with a curb. o More dedicated bike routes like the Central Valley Greenway. o More secure lockers for bike and gear. o Set an aggressive cycling mode share such as 50% by 2050. Copenhagen has set a goal of 50% by 2015. o Mandate that all events with 1,000+ people offer a Bicycle Valet service, as they do in San Francisco. o More on-street bike racks. o Better “light systems” along the bike route will server better people who are traveling in the evening. Driver Penalties o Charge a fee for entry into the downtown core by car. o Implement a GPS tracking device that is installed on people’s vehicles (encouraged by offering a deal) that would track the vehicle’s mileage and usage. With these GPS devices would be a newly implemented toll on the bridges, tunnel, and major roads. o I’d like to see vehicle registrations taxed; employing a formula that takes into consideration vehicle mass, distance driven, and towing capacity. Small, efficient cars could be exempt, while giant pickups with dually rear wheels will take the brunt of the tax burden, and well they should. Encourage frugality, reward sensible decisions, and make the big pickups pay! o What about the transport trucks? They are bigger, heavier, and pollute more than any big pickup. Start to make transports go through AirCare, implement different classifications of license for pickup owners.
