Doctor of Philosophy (Political Science), August 2008, 191 pp., bibliography of 227 titles. This dissertation addresses an ignored [partly for its controversial nature] aspect of Nietzschean philosophy: that of the role of modern woman in the creation of a future horizon. Details of the effects of the Enlightenment, Christianity and democracy upon society are discussed, as well as effects on the individual, particularly woman. After this forward look at the changes anticipated by Nietzsche, the traditional roles of woman as the eternal feminine, wife and mother are debated. An argument for the necessity of a continuation of the battle of the sexes, and the struggle among men and women in a context of sexual love and friendship is given. This mutual affirmation must occur through the motivation of pride and not vanity. In conclusion, I argue that one possible avenue for change is a Nietzschean call for a modern revaluation of values by noble woman in conjugation with her warrior scholar to bring about the elevation of mankind. -

A Fire Bell in the Night! 1 The black whip whistled through the air and slashed the naked back with such force that it sent out a spray of blood. The victim's body arched taut, her wrists straining at the thongs that bound her to the post. But not a sound passed her lips. Furious, her mistress, standing beside the overseer, whispered for him to make her beg for mercy, for by her silence, her personal slave was wining again. The overseer scarcely bothered to acknowledge the request. She would cry out soon enough; he had seen them try to hold back the screams before. But after four or five of his best strokes, her will would start to crumble, and she would be shrieking for mercy loud enough to be heard halfway across the county. In the meantime, as long as she was determined not to give them the satisfaction of hearing her cry out, he would enjoy the contest. He aimed his second lash lower, where she would not expect it. From long experience he had learned that slaves who had not been whipped before invariably assumed that the lightning would strike in the same place, like spanking a child, and they would steel themselves to receive a second blow directly on top of the first. So the overseer liked to surprise them. If there were to be more than a dozen or so lashes, he would open fresh wounds wherever possible. Such was his skill that he could not only make the whip either cut or merely raise welts, but he could lay a pattern of a dozen stripes without ever repeating. -

Can Fiction Generate Social Change?
Student ID: 1405937 Can fiction generate social change? Certainly it can. Look at Black Beauty. Written as an autobiography, Anna Sewell’s 1877 novel describes the life of the eponymous horse, Black Beauty, from his early days in fields with his mother, through life with owners good and bad, to his comfortable final home in the countryside. This book was described in the Encyclopedia of Animal Rights and Animal Welfare as “the most influential anticruelty novel of all time”. In the USA alone a million copies were sold within two years and it was widely distributed by animal rights activists to people who worked with horses. One example of the anticruelty legislation that was passed after its release was the abolition of the bearing rein. This held a horse’s head up high to look stylish, but prevented the horse leaning forward to pull. Wearing the rein was described by Black Beauty’s friend Ginger as “dreadful . your neck aching until you don’t know how to bear it . the blood from my tongue covered the froth that kept flying from my lips”. So why was it that Black Beauty was so influential, instead of being dismissed, like many horsey books, as sentimental anthropomorphism for teenage girls? Partly because, besides being a ripping good read and accurate in detail, it was written at the right time: a time of social change, 1 Student ID: 1405937 when Charles Dickens’ novels were raising awareness of the ill effects of poverty and Harriet Beecher Stowe was assisting the abolition of slavery with U ncle Tom’s Cabin. In order to generate social change, a novel must be different. -

Freakish, Feathery, and Foreign: Language of Otherness in the Squire’s Tale Laurel Meister hough setting a standard for English literature in the centuries to follow, The Canterbury Tales was anything but standard in its Town time. Written in a Middle English vernacular that was only recently being used for poetry, and filtered through the minds and mouths of the wackiest of characters, Geoffrey Chaucer’s storytelling explores the Other: an unfamiliar realm set apart from the norm. One of the tales whose lan- guage engages with the Other, the Squire’s Tale features a magical ring al- lowing its wearer to understand any bird “And knowe his menyng openly and pleyn / and answere hym in his langage again,” a rhyme that repeats like an incantation throughout the tale.1 Told from the perspective of a young and inexperienced Squire, the story has all the makings of a chivalric fairy- tale—including a knight and a beautiful princess—with none of the finesse.
