The theater itself has stood proudly on 125th Street since 1914, when it started life as a burlesque house for whites only, Hurtig & Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater. Dancers in skimpy costumes stripped down to flesh-colored leotards, and comics told bawdy jokes – that is, until then New York City Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia made the decision to close down burlesque houses all over the city. When the doors of the burlesque theaters were padlocked, the building was sold. By S ul the time it reopened in 1934, a new name proclaimed itself from the marquee: the 125th Street Apollo Theatre. From the start, the Apollo was beloved by Harlemites, and immediately of became an integral part of Harlem life. When the Apollo first opened, Harlem boasted a lot of theaters and clubs. But many didn’t admit black audiences. Though the musicians who played in the clubs were black, the audiences were often white; the country still had a lot to American learn about integration. But the Apollo didn’t play primarily to whites. As soon as it opened its doors, black residents of Harlem streamed in themselves to enjoy the show. In the early years, the Apollo presented acts in a revue format, with a variety of acts on each bill.

Columbia University’s Expansion Proposal In July 2003, Columbia University announced its thirty-year plan to build an eighteen-acre science and arts complex in West Harlem just north of its historic Morningside Heights campus and two miles south of its uptown medical center.2 Columbia’s plan would change the physical and socioeconomic layout of the target area. The plan involved massive growth of its existing campus, requiring significant re-zoning of the area targeted for construction. At the time of its announcement, Columbia already had purchased nearly half of the site and expected to acquire the other half through private sales, or from City and State agencies that owned large parcels in the proposed footprint.3 By the time that the plan was approved by the New York City Council in December 2007, Columbia controlled all but a very few properties on the proposed expansion site. Its evolving plan for the new campus had expanded to include a new business school, scientific research facilities (including laboratories), student and staff housing, and an underground gym and pool. Columbia’s announcement set in motion a complex, multi-level legal and political process which ultimately led to the project’s approval and commencement. Located upstairs on 142nd Street in Harlem, it opened in 1920 as the Club Deluxe by former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson. It became the Cotton Club in 1923, when it was bought by mobster Owney Madden. The club was a magnificent ensemble of vast dance floor, stage, and opulent décor. The entrance was in log cabin style, but the bandstand was done in a Southern plantation mansion motif. From the ceiling hung enormous chandeliers. The club seated between 500 and 700 people. It is little wonder the Cotton Club was dubbed “the aristocrat of Harlem” by a British visitor. The $5 entrance charge (roughly equivalent to $50 today) bought the most spectacular show in town. The main visual attraction at the club were the 30 to 50 chorus girls, advertised as “the most beau- tiful Creoles.” They had to be at least 5’ 11” tall (180 cm) and very good looking. Their job was very demanding—they changed costumes after every song—but they were well paid. The club opened at 10 p.m. with swinging dance music. Two shows followed at midnight and 2 a.m., and the club closed at 3 a.m. A number of jazz musicians, including the best known stars of the day, played there. Perhaps the most notable band to New Year’s Eve at the Cotton Club, 1932 play at the Cotton Club was Duke Ellington’s orchestra, which played Three friends share a toast in this swanky nightclub.

    The Changing Face of Harlem – The Savoy Sessions Dan Morgenstern Grammy Award for Best Album Notes 1976 The history of jazz is often told in terms of geography—a journey from New Orleans to Chicago to Kansas City to New York, and from there, throughout the world. Like any generalization, this way of outlining the music's development has its shortcomings. New York had been a jazz landmark long before it became the chief incubator of a new style eventually called bebop. And for jazz purposes, New York in the main meant Harlem, the largest (and once most glamorous) black metropolis outside Africa. In the '20s, Harlem was practically the entertainment capital of America, if not the western world. “The world's most glamorous atmosphere .... Why, it's just like Arabian Nights,” said young Duke Ellington when first confronted with its splendors in 1923. To the contemporary mind, conditioned to think of Harlem as a “ghetto,” a vast slum, a breeding ground for social ills, this may seem like fantasy. But even today, there are fine streets and houses in Harlem, there is the Apollo Theater (the last remaining bastion of a once proud show business tradition), there are places to eat and drink well, and places to hear music. But sadly, for every one of the latter, there were a couple of dozen in Harlem‘s heyday. These ranged from basement clubs and unpretentious saloons that might feature a piano player and/or a singer to such elaborate operations as the Cotton Club, with its especially composed, staged and choreographed revues featuring the best in black talent and catering exclusively to whites (black show people were allowed to watch).

    “The Harlem Renaissance: Rebirth of African-American Arts” Westbury Arts Remembers Cab Calloway 1907 – 1994 Bandleader, songwriter, composer, singer, actor and author Photograph of Cab Calloway by Carl Van Vechten National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, © Carl Van Vechten Trust Cab Calloway’s persona and performance style symbolized the spirit of night life in Harlem during its “Renaissance.” His stage act has been described “lively and energetic,” and “injecting his band's performances with a festive exuberance.” Calloway became one of the most popular entertainers of the 1930s and '40s, in no short measure due to his charm, energy, and his eccentric dancing. Born in Rochester, New York on Christmas Day in1907 and named Cabell “Cab” Calloway III, the second of Cabell and Eulalia Reed Calloway's six children. His father, Cab Senior, practiced law and sold real estate. Young Cab enjoyed singing in church, but he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and study law. However, his older sister Blanche was appearing as a singer with a show called Plantation Days in Chicago, and after high school graduation, Calloway appealed to her for advice. She sent him a train ticket and helped him find a job as a singer, too. This was the start of what became a 67-year career in show business. By 1925 Calloway was working as a drummer with the Sunset Cafe band in Chicago. While performing at the Sunset Club, Calloway met Louis Armstrong, who became his mentor and taught him the art of scat singing (improvised jazz singing in which the voice is used in imitation of an instrument).
