2 From the desk of DICK & SHIRLEY WHITE, NNJSDA PRESIDENTS Although it was hot this summer, an average of 23 squares were cool and having fun, in the air-conditioned halls on Wednesday nights at the NNJSDA Summer Dances. Those dancers who attended the Warm-Up Dance also had a great evening. Congratulations to Y Squares for winning the attendance award for the 1991 Summer Dances. The NNJSDA Executive Board is planning to attend one of Y Squares dances to present them with their well-deserved award. Richmond Dancers is to be congratulated also for their fine support. Their attendance was very close to Y Squares. We are pleased to announce that 43 dancers received their Freeloader Awards (names on page 5). We would like to thank all the dancers who supported the NNJSDA Summer Dances in 1991. Congratulations to the following ciubs for attaining the "One Square is Fair Award for the 1990-1991 dance season: Cross Trail Squares, lronia Reelers, Lakeland Squares, Richmond Dancers, Valley Squares and Y Squares. The NNJSDA Executive Board will be presenting these six clubs with their awards at the November 30th, Chuck Stinchcomb Special. in order to receive this award, member c!ub must have di ieasi one square at the Mini-Festival and all NNJSDA Specials. Wouldn't you like to help your club receive this award next year? You can make a difference. We would like to see the number of clubs receiving this award to double next year. We would like to suggest the key word of the 1991-1992 season should be: SUPPORT. Support Classes: Be an "Angel" and support the students; be enthusiastic, cheerful, helpful and friendly. Presidents' Letter continued from page 3 Take your new friends from your class to student-level dances. Encourage them. Support Your Club: Support your officers; give them praise and help. Attend dances. Participate in raids. Volunteer to help. Bring refreshments when asked. Support Your Association: ,Attend the student-level dances. Attend the NNJSDA specials. Attend the NNJSDA summer dances. Support Other Clubs: Attend dances sponsored by other clubs and invite their members to attend your club. What will be the results of your support? You will be the winner. You'll have fun and friendship and be a great dancer. Your club, other clubs and your Association will be stronger. Support, let's do it. A few random thoughts before closing: 1. Are you smiling in your square? 2. Do you clap for the caller and cuer? 3. Why are dancers leaving before the dance is over? 4. When was the last time you thanked someone for giving you a great dance (caller, cuer, president or other officer, refreshment chairmen, someone who helped you in a square)? Although it is somewhat premature, we wish all of you a joyous Holiday Season, and a New Year filled with Peace and Joy. Dick, d' Shirley White, Presidents, NVSDA 4 'ONE SQUARE IS FAIR' ONE SQUARE (OF DONOX5) IS FA MEW! The NNJSDA is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Sunday, January 19th, 1992, in conjunction with the Delegates' Meeting. Donations can begin at 12 noon. This is the one and only time during the year that we ask you to give blood - even though there is an on-going need all year long. The holidays will be behind us, so you won't feel pooped out. This is the one "bank" that we need to keep full to overflowing! The Association gets a good turnout for its dances with the slogan, "One Square is Fair," so our goal for the January Delegates' Meeting is one square of donors (or more!) from each club is fairer. That's only eight people - surely there are lots more in each club who are eligible to donate. The guidelines are: donors must be between 17 and 75 years of age; weigh at leat 110 pounds; and not have given blood within the past 56 days. TAKING PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS DOES NOT NECESSARILY EXCLUDE YOU FROM BEING ABLE TO DONATE BLOOD! If you have any questions, or would like to discuss how you can donate elsewhere and still give credit to our bank (number 9192), give me a call at 71 8- 7'07 Ci AA L I s.1 I "T I . The January meeting will be on class coordinators and presented by the 2nd VPs. The April meeting will be about Grand Square presented by Charlie & Kathy Porter and their staff. The theme today is "The NNJSDA & You, Perfect Together," given by Dick & Shirley White, Presidents. In this equation, the delegates and presidents of the clubs are the "YOU" and the officers of the Executive Board are the "NNJSDA." Dick had the delegates pass out an oar through audience. He then asked them to imagine themselves in a boat with just one oar rowing the boat. He concluded that the best that they could do would be to go around in circles. If the boat were the NNJSDA, it would not go forward. He then handed out wooden ice cream spoons Continued on page 8 Let Birchwood host your next square dance. 7 VW SDA Minutes continued from page 6 to the Executive Board and asked them to imagine that these spoons would grow into oars when they hit the water. The Executive Board would not go very far alone. He then handed out the wooden spoons to the delegates. He then concluded that if we all have the same size oar and we all dip in together this year, the Assocation will blossom and go forward. Shirley asked, "What is the Association? What is your role in it? " All of us are the Association. You are the officers, dancers. Just like everyone else volunteering some of your time to try to make square dancing better for all of us. What do the officers of the Association do? They sponsor special dances and try to have callers and cuers some clubs can't afford. In that way we can dance with the best callers and cuers that are out there. The Association buys books for the students to learn. They sponsor special student dances. Diplomas and packets that give them information about dancing are distributed to the clubs sponsoring classes. They help clubs with publicity, advertising on radio and television and in Grand Square. They help you find dances in the area so that you can dance wherever you please. They have a Blood Bank; Donna Anderson will discuss later. State Dress is a green vest over a white dress for the woman and a green vest over a white shirt and white slacks for the man. This should be worn as required indicating that you are from NJ. How can you help? What can you do to make square dancing better? Delegates should attend meetings and disseminate information to their clubs. Support the Association with "One Square is Fair (one square for each event that the Association sponsors). Dick said that attached to the Agenda is a list of the Delegates' respuilsibirities, which was revised as of 9ii 5/91 . He went over the list with the delegates_ Alsn attarhpri to thA Arienria was a lief of nsigned to help the 1st and 2nd VPs at the Association functions. Dick mentioned that the Booster Drive for Grand Square will be discussed at another meeting. He cleared up a misconception that the Booster Tags are $1.00 per couple. He corrected this and informed the delegates that it is really $1.00 per dancer. The purpose of the Booster Drive is to support the Grand Square. Some clubs are raising the money for the Booster Drive by collecting it with their dues. This is the club's prerogative, but it is the duty of the delegate to sell the Booster Tags in order to collect $1.00 per dancer. Dick stated that the club president is responsible for reporting any accident to a person or damage to property and gathering any information about the incident. He said that included with the insurance package is a form to report claims against the club or against the property where the dance is held. If you have a problem with injuries or damage to a hall, it should be reported immediately to the Association. Fred will go into this later in the meeting. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Audit Committee: Fred Hill announced that Leon Smith, C.P.A., volunteered to audit the books. The books are in order and accurate for the fiscal year June 1, 1990 to May 31, 1991. Insurance Report: Fred Hill stated that it is very important to report claims. We have a $1million insurance policy for bodily injury and property damage. The insurance protects dancers for medical payments of up to $1,000 times a factor of 10 (10 people injured at one timP). At the time of an accident, get all the information possible. Forward it immediately to Fred & Kathryn Hill, the Insurance Coordinators. If for some reason you are injured or if there is any property damaged, you are protected by our insurance. Fred said he and Kathryn would hand out the applications at the end of the meeting to the delegates. The insurance premium is paid on the number of regular and special dances that each club holds. The students at the classes are automatically covered, at no additional charge. A new feature of the policy is that is covers the dancers if alcohol is served at an activity. If you have an activity of less than 4 days duration, you are covered. SDCNJ Liaison: Norman Bolin announced that the last meeting was held in January 1991. Since then, they had the Convention. The next meeting is October 12, 1991. Norman & Audrey will not be able to attend. Jim & Joyce Kelly have volunteered to take their place. With reterence to the Mini-Festival, Norman & Audrey are the Registrars. Norman thanked all the delegates for picking up their packet of tickets and flyers for the Mini-Festival. State Dress: no report. Ericsons' Tel # is listed on page 2 of Grand Square. Blood Bank: Donna Anderson wants one square of donors from each club to be present at the next Delegates' Meeting on January 19, 1992, 12 noon to donate blood. One square is fair once a year. Our club number is 9192 for those who want to give blood elsewhere. Two dancers' families have been taken care of by our blood bank. 9 NV-5a Minutes continued from page 8 immediate family is covered. We have to have a minimum of 50 units of blood a year donated. It was pointed out that Ray O'Neill and Bill & Donna Anderson have donated gallons of blood. LIAISON REPORTS: CCNJ: Dolores Gesumaria reported that they had met on June 8th and September 14th. They are interested in publicity for square dancers. Discussion about having a callers' class. They meet 4 times a year. Dolores will accept any questions to bring back to the next meeting. NNJRDLC: Ron Kapnick and Ruth Edison reported that the first meeting will be September 29th. No report to submit. Scholarship Awards: Dick & Shirley presented Brian Fugere, President of CCNJ, and Ruth Woerner, Moderator of NNJRDLC, with checks for the scholarship donation. Ruth announced that the new moderater was Dave Roberts. NJ License Plates: Frank & Helen Cavanaugh stated that yes, we are going through with the license plates for square dancers. We need 500. We now have 200 from the state and 100 from the Association. We need at least 6 couples from each club in the Associaition to purchase license plates. OLD BUSINESS: BMI/ASCAP: Took effect as of April 1991. Dick stated that he has a tape and booklets that he and Shirley brought back from the Convention If anyone would like to see them, they should let him know. Attached (to minutes mailed) is a copy of the CallerLab questions and answers, also a sample contract. The recommended language is part of the sample contract. Clubs should protect themselves by checking their present contracts with callers/curers. Shirley displayed the NJ Banner, the plaque and photographs that were taken at the NSDC in Salt Lake City. Square Dance Tape: Local TV station in Summit asked if we could get involved in producing a tape on square dancing and a group from Valley Squares, Y Squares, Harmony Dancers and a
couple of dancers from Colonial Squares made a 30-minute tape with John Kaltenthaler calling . John discussed the history of square dancing and talked to the dancing couples. It has been shown on Channel 36, Summit and Berkeley Heights area starting in May, going all summer. It was on Suburban Cable TV in the Essex Union Area, 3 times in Sept. on Channel 32. Richmond Dancers had it on their access Channel four times. Dick & Shirley have a copy of the tape, if anyone is interested. DISBANDMENT OF CLUBS: Dick was sad to announce the disbandment of the following clubs: M.T. Squares, Colonial Squares, Montville Squares and Cloverleafs. Two were Challenge clubs and two were Plus clubs. There are no Challenge clubs in the Association. We are now down to 35 active clubs in the Association. Colonial Squares is now a caller-run club. NEW BUSINESS: The Association has received two Applirminne! for mernhershirp.).- n 9- H nancers, dancino in iviiddietown, NY, were represented by Presidents, Connie & Don Kimble, as observers at the meeting. Hunterdon Flutterwheels, dancing in Flemington, NJ. were represented by presidents, Massimo & Don Elliott, at the meeting. The 3rd VPs will be visiting both clubs. Both clubs will be informed at the January nialeptos' Meeting as to the status of their applicatons. CONVENTION DISPLAY: Shirley requested each club to give the Association something for the display at the NSDC and NJSRDC. We are going to start a scrapbook and each club will be allotted two pages, which could include snapshots or anything else that shows the activities of the club. These items should be given to the 3rd VPs. LUST, 1992: At the Executive Board Meeting there was a discussion about a change of the date for LUST. The Board looked at last year's LUST and for the amount of time, effort and expense that went into LUST, not only by the dancers who attended, but the officers and presenters, the Board felt that it should be moved to the 1st Sunday in October (October 4, 1992), the reason being publicity. By moving it to the first Sunday in October, we then would have had a Delegates' Meeting that, gives us a larger audience to disseminate iriinrmatinn about the avont. 1990's attendance was good, but it could have been a lot better. The Raid Chairpersons are frit OD Gb Dave & Lenora Libeskind, always much involved in club affairs. Open House in September was a big success with teacher/caller Dick Mazziotti. Larry Davenport is our Official Club Caller; great to have him aboard. Bob & Lyn Terry attended the NSDC along with former B & B'ers Herb & Doris Nuber. Summer travel took Jim & Pat Broderick on a trip "down under" to Australia, and Marion Meyer's tripping down in CA caused a fractured hip bone. Husband Fred's TLC is working wonders and we hope they'll soon be squaring up again.
