2 From the desk of DICK & SHIRLEY WHITE, NNJSDA PRESIDENTS Although it was hot this summer, an average of 23 squares were cool and having fun, in the air-conditioned halls on Wednesday nights at the NNJSDA Summer Dances. Those dancers who attended the Warm-Up Dance also had a great evening. Congratulations to Y Squares for winning the attendance award for the 1991 Summer Dances. The NNJSDA Executive Board is planning to attend one of Y Squares dances to present them with their well-deserved award. Richmond Dancers is to be congratulated also for their fine support. Their attendance was very close to Y Squares. We are pleased to announce that 43 dancers received their Freeloader Awards (names on page 5). We would like to thank all the dancers who supported the NNJSDA Summer Dances in 1991. Congratulations to the following ciubs for attaining the "One Square is Fair Award for the 1990-1991 dance season: Cross Trail Squares, lronia Reelers, Lakeland Squares, Richmond Dancers, Valley Squares and Y Squares. The NNJSDA Executive Board will be presenting these six clubs with their awards at the November 30th, Chuck Stinchcomb Special. in order to receive this award, member c!ub must have di ieasi one square at the Mini-Festival and all NNJSDA Specials. Wouldn't you like to help your club receive this award next year? You can make a difference. We would like to see the number of clubs receiving this award to double next year. We would like to suggest the key word of the 1991-1992 season should be: SUPPORT. Support Classes: Be an "Angel" and support the students; be enthusiastic, cheerful, helpful and friendly. Presidents' Letter continued from page 3 Take your new friends from your class to student-level dances. Encourage them. Support Your Club: Support your officers; give them praise and help. Attend dances. Participate in raids. Volunteer to help. Bring refreshments when asked. Support Your Association: ,Attend the student-level dances. Attend the NNJSDA specials. Attend the NNJSDA summer dances. Support Other Clubs: Attend dances sponsored by other clubs and invite their members to attend your club. What will be the results of your support? You will be the winner. You'll have fun and friendship and be a great dancer. Your club, other clubs and your Association will be stronger. Support, let's do it. A few random thoughts before closing: 1. Are you smiling in your square? 2. Do you clap for the caller and cuer? 3. Why are dancers leaving before the dance is over? 4. When was the last time you thanked someone for giving you a great dance (caller, cuer, president or other officer, refreshment chairmen, someone who helped you in a square)? Although it is somewhat premature, we wish all of you a joyous Holiday Season, and a New Year filled with Peace and Joy. Dick, d' Shirley White, Presidents, NVSDA 4 'ONE SQUARE IS FAIR' ONE SQUARE (OF DONOX5) IS FA MEW! The NNJSDA is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Sunday, January 19th, 1992, in conjunction with the Delegates' Meeting. Donations can begin at 12 noon. This is the one and only time during the year that we ask you to give blood - even though there is an on-going need all year long. The holidays will be behind us, so you won't feel pooped out. This is the one "bank" that we need to keep full to overflowing! The Association gets a good turnout for its dances with the slogan, "One Square is Fair," so our goal for the January Delegates' Meeting is one square of donors (or more!) from each club is fairer. That's only eight people - surely there are lots more in each club who are eligible to donate. The guidelines are: donors must be between 17 and 75 years of age; weigh at leat 110 pounds; and not have given blood within the past 56 days. TAKING PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS DOES NOT NECESSARILY EXCLUDE YOU FROM BEING ABLE TO DONATE BLOOD! If you have any questions, or would like to discuss how you can donate elsewhere and still give credit to our bank (number 9192), give me a call at 71 8- 7'07 Ci AA L I s.1 I "T I . The January meeting will be on class coordinators and presented by the 2nd VPs. The April meeting will be about Grand Square presented by Charlie & Kathy Porter and their staff. The theme today is "The NNJSDA & You, Perfect Together," given by Dick & Shirley White, Presidents. In this equation, the delegates and presidents of the clubs are the "YOU" and the officers of the Executive Board are the "NNJSDA." Dick had the delegates pass out an oar through audience. He then asked them to imagine themselves in a boat with just one oar rowing the boat. He concluded that the best that they could do would be to go around in circles. If the boat were the NNJSDA, it would not go forward. He then handed out wooden ice cream spoons Continued on page 8 Let Birchwood host your next square dance. 7 VW SDA Minutes continued from page 6 to the Executive Board and asked them to imagine that these spoons would grow into oars when they hit the water. The Executive Board would not go very far alone. He then handed out the wooden spoons to the delegates. He then concluded that if we all have the same size oar and we all dip in together this year, the Assocation will blossom and go forward. Shirley asked, "What is the Association? What is your role in it? " All of us are the Association. You are the officers, dancers. Just like everyone else volunteering some of your time to try to make square dancing better for all of us. What do the officers of the Association do? They sponsor special dances and try to have callers and cuers some clubs can't afford. In that way we can dance with the best callers and cuers that are out there. The Association buys books for the students to learn. They sponsor special student dances. Diplomas and packets that give them information about dancing are distributed to the clubs sponsoring classes. They help clubs with publicity, advertising on radio and television and in Grand Square. They help you find dances in the area so that you can dance wherever you please. They have a Blood Bank; Donna Anderson will discuss later. State Dress is a green vest over a white dress for the woman and a green vest over a white shirt and white slacks for the man. This should be worn as required indicating that you are from NJ. How can you help? What can you do to make square dancing better? Delegates should attend meetings and disseminate information to their clubs. Support the Association with "One Square is Fair (one square for each event that the Association sponsors). Dick said that attached to the Agenda is a list of the Delegates' respuilsibirities, which was revised as of 9ii 5/91 . He went over the list with the delegates_ Alsn attarhpri to thA Arienria was a lief of nsigned to help the 1st and 2nd VPs at the Association functions. Dick mentioned that the Booster Drive for Grand Square will be discussed at another meeting. He cleared up a misconception that the Booster Tags are $1.00 per couple. He corrected this and informed the delegates that it is really $1.00 per dancer. The purpose of the Booster Drive is to support the Grand Square. Some clubs are raising the money for the Booster Drive by collecting it with their dues. This is the club's prerogative, but it is the duty of the delegate to sell the Booster Tags in order to collect $1.00 per dancer. Dick stated that the club president is responsible for reporting any accident to a person or damage to property and gathering any information about the incident. He said that included with the insurance package is a form to report claims against the club or against the property where the dance is held. If you have a problem with injuries or damage to a hall, it should be reported immediately to the Association. Fred will go into this later in the meeting. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Audit Committee: Fred Hill announced that Leon Smith, C.P.A., volunteered to audit the books. The books are in order and accurate for the fiscal year June 1, 1990 to May 31, 1991. Insurance Report: Fred Hill stated that it is very important to report claims. We have a $1million insurance policy for bodily injury and property damage. The insurance protects dancers for medical payments of up to $1,000 times a factor of 10 (10 people injured at one timP). At the time of an accident, get all the information possible. Forward it immediately to Fred & Kathryn Hill, the Insurance Coordinators. If for some reason you are injured or if there is any property damaged, you are protected by our insurance. Fred said he and Kathryn would hand out the applications at the end of the meeting to the delegates. The insurance premium is paid on the number of regular and special dances that each club holds. The students at the classes are automatically covered, at no additional charge. A new feature of the policy is that is covers the dancers if alcohol is served at an activity. If you have an activity of less than 4 days duration, you are covered. SDCNJ Liaison: Norman Bolin announced that the last meeting was held in January 1991. Since then, they had the Convention. The next meeting is October 12, 1991. Norman & Audrey will not be able to attend. Jim & Joyce Kelly have volunteered to take their place. With reterence to the Mini-Festival, Norman & Audrey are the Registrars. Norman thanked all the delegates for picking up their packet of tickets and flyers for the Mini-Festival. State Dress: no report. Ericsons' Tel # is listed on page 2 of Grand Square. Blood Bank: Donna Anderson wants one square of donors from each club to be present at the next Delegates' Meeting on January 19, 1992, 12 noon to donate blood. One square is fair once a year. Our club number is 9192 for those who want to give blood elsewhere. Two dancers' families have been taken care of by our blood bank. 9 NV-5a Minutes continued from page 8 immediate family is covered. We have to have a minimum of 50 units of blood a year donated. It was pointed out that Ray O'Neill and Bill & Donna Anderson have donated gallons of blood. LIAISON REPORTS: CCNJ: Dolores Gesumaria reported that they had met on June 8th and September 14th. They are interested in publicity for square dancers. Discussion about having a callers' class. They meet 4 times a year. Dolores will accept any questions to bring back to the next meeting. NNJRDLC: Ron Kapnick and Ruth Edison reported that the first meeting will be September 29th. No report to submit. Scholarship Awards: Dick & Shirley presented Brian Fugere, President of CCNJ, and Ruth Woerner, Moderator of NNJRDLC, with checks for the scholarship donation. Ruth announced that the new moderater was Dave Roberts. NJ License Plates: Frank & Helen Cavanaugh stated that yes, we are going through with the license plates for square dancers. We need 500. We now have 200 from the state and 100 from the Association. We need at least 6 couples from each club in the Associaition to purchase license plates. OLD BUSINESS: BMI/ASCAP: Took effect as of April 1991. Dick stated that he has a tape and booklets that he and Shirley brought back from the Convention If anyone would like to see them, they should let him know. Attached (to minutes mailed) is a copy of the CallerLab questions and answers, also a sample contract. The recommended language is part of the sample contract. Clubs should protect themselves by checking their present contracts with callers/curers. Shirley displayed the NJ Banner, the plaque and photographs that were taken at the NSDC in Salt Lake City. Square Dance Tape: Local TV station in Summit asked if we could get involved in producing a tape on square dancing and a group from Valley Squares, Y Squares, Harmony Dancers and a

couple of dancers from Colonial Squares made a 30-minute tape with John Kaltenthaler calling . John discussed the history of square dancing and talked to the dancing couples. It has been shown on Channel 36, Summit and Berkeley Heights area starting in May, going all summer. It was on Suburban Cable TV in the Essex Union Area, 3 times in Sept. on Channel 32. Richmond Dancers had it on their access Channel four times. Dick & Shirley have a copy of the tape, if anyone is interested. DISBANDMENT OF CLUBS: Dick was sad to announce the disbandment of the following clubs: M.T. Squares, Colonial Squares, Montville Squares and Cloverleafs. Two were Challenge clubs and two were Plus clubs. There are no Challenge clubs in the Association. We are now down to 35 active clubs in the Association. Colonial Squares is now a caller-run club. NEW BUSINESS: The Association has received two Applirminne! for mernhershirp.).- n 9- H nancers, dancino in iviiddietown, NY, were represented by Presidents, Connie & Don Kimble, as observers at the meeting. Hunterdon Flutterwheels, dancing in Flemington, NJ. were represented by presidents, Massimo & Don Elliott, at the meeting. The 3rd VPs will be visiting both clubs. Both clubs will be informed at the January nialeptos' Meeting as to the status of their applicatons. CONVENTION DISPLAY: Shirley requested each club to give the Association something for the display at the NSDC and NJSRDC. We are going to start a scrapbook and each club will be allotted two pages, which could include snapshots or anything else that shows the activities of the club. These items should be given to the 3rd VPs. LUST, 1992: At the Executive Board Meeting there was a discussion about a change of the date for LUST. The Board looked at last year's LUST and for the amount of time, effort and expense that went into LUST, not only by the dancers who attended, but the officers and presenters, the Board felt that it should be moved to the 1st Sunday in October (October 4, 1992), the reason being publicity. By moving it to the first Sunday in October, we then would have had a Delegates' Meeting that, gives us a larger audience to disseminate iriinrmatinn about the avont. 1990's attendance was good, but it could have been a lot better. We've had many visitors to our Plus dances, who are always welcome, and great callers including: John Carlton, Larry Kinnard, John Kephart and a Special International Night with Manny Amor. Our Plus class/workshop was held all summer on Monday nights. Many dancers learned the Plus moves while some angels reviewed the tricky moves. Our first dance started with a bang! - the hottest day of the year and Ray Lehberger didn't show up - our thanks to Bob Robinson for filling in. We also found out that we had to find a new hall to dance in - so, it's the Wayne Civic Center for both dances and lessons. We have another young couple as our presidents, Diane Kasper and Pau! The Board does not like to change dates, but they want to give clubs fair warning (56 weeks) that this is happening. There will be a dance in the evening, after the work session, open to all dancers. LUST (Let Us Speak Together) consists of an afternoon of presentations on various subjects, such as club finances, how to do ads, how to hire a caller/cuer, use of computer, use of microphone, sewing clinic, etc. , that help officers with their duties. The presenters are usually well-versed. It is followed by a potluck supper and then a dance. The Association encourages the clubs to subsidize the officers in some way who attend LUST. The clubs dancing on the first Sunday of the month are as follows: FAD, J & M Squares and Kings Squares. If any of those clubs have a problem with that October date, they should speak to Dick or Shirley and it will be brought back to the Executive Board. PRESIDENTS' REMARKS: Reserved for next meeting. GOOD & WELFARE: Comment from a delegate complimenting the Editors of Grand Square for putting out a professional magazine. It was suggested that the club officers have their adm. to the dance subsidized by the club. RockyTops of Rockland asked why new clubs have to wait a year before becoming members of the Association. They want to know why they can't get insurance from the Association. John Aquino answered that we don't want clubs coming into the Association and then dropping out within a few months. He said that insurance is available through United Square Dancers of America at a cost of $2.50 per member per calendar year. It might be possible to work it (NNJSDA Ins.) out with the Insurance Coordinator. That would require a change of the Constitution. Dick added that the wait of a year is for stability. A delegate discussed a flyer that she got at a Reception Ctr. in VA showina where all the rhihP. were and the gates that tney danced. She thought it would be a good idea if we had the same thing. Dick has such a pamphlet and will bring it up at the SDCNJ meeting. Since it would be distributed throughout the state, the best place to be sponsored would be by the SDCNJ. Next Mtg. will be held on Jan. 19, 1992 at 1:30 PM at the VFW Hall, Elmwd Pk, NJ. Flyers to be distributed between 1-1:30 PM. Meeting adjourned at 3:40 PM. NECK TIE Here's a quick project that will add a holiday flair to your basic man's shirt. Along with the sash I gave directions for in the last issue, you only need 1 yd. of fabric. If you're only making this tie then you'll need a strip 6" or 7" wide and 45" - 50" long, de- pending on fabric width 6 thickness and the man's height. (A) Fold in half and, at selvage edges, cut both ends together on a diagonal, Nb .41 according to the sketch- Starting at the shorter long edge (A) roll edge to the wrong side and stitch fc. (a sort of handkerchief edge). When you rirEt el rew inches Urnm the first corner and pre-roll the edge of the diagonal cut, then continue folding under the edge on which you are stitching, and continue sewing so that turning the corner flows easily. At the sharp point, follow the same technique but first, fold in the point on a -le;I c) diagonal so that no raw edge threads will pc ir stick out after the rolling and stitching. Finish stitching around all sides and press. Fold in half again with long points together and use a pin to mark the center on the shorter long side. On the same side use pins to mark 6" out from both sides of center. Keep right side of fabric facing you. C 4.0S s Carl ON ViEvi of

fip Rcx ,•111-ali_ to kis teihrhai Now for the tricky part, the folding. This is an dec.:ordicin fold with the last fold (of the longest long side) going over the back. The first fold is about 1" wide, and each successive fold is a little smaller, with the last fold over the back just meeting the inside edge of the rolled hem. (See cross section sketch.) Now slide the pins out where they are and re-pin the folds together in the same places. Stitch longways down the center of the folds between end pins making sure you catch the back folded edge. That's it for the sewing, now make sure it is worn properly. You can use a man's ring for a tie slide, or get crea- tive and make something special. The store bought ones may not be wide enough if your fabric isn't thin. ITAFTY HOLIDAYS !

55 A new color brochure is available for CALgfi LAE recruiting new dancers. These fan-fold The International Association brochures, of high-quality 80Ib. paper, were of Square Dance Callers designed and produced by Callerlab member Shawn Cuddy (Stow, MA), and is titled "A New Song & Dance Routine." It includes various scenes of square dancers, taken at actual dances. The full- color, professionally produced and written copy tells what square dancing is all about and invites non-dancers to join in the fun. Brochures are available in packages of 100 and can be obtained from: Callerlab Foundation, 829-3rd Avenue SE, Ste. 215, Rochester, MN 55904- 507-288-5121. The Mainstream Quarterly Selection for the quarter beginning October 1, 1991 is Teacup Stroll. Starting formation: static square. Ending formation: static square, original home position. Timing: 32 beats (same as Grand Square). Dance examples: Any standard Grand Square pattern or singing call. Teacup Stroll has a flow similar to that of the Plus move Teacup Chain, but is simpler. Two calls were dropped from the Quarterly Selections: Linear Tag (MS) and Star Track (Plus), The Calleriab Round of the Quarter for the 4th quarter of 1991 is "Rowdy" (Grenn 17149). CallerLab is dedicatedto the promulgation and improvement of square dancing as a universal, friendly form of recreation and expects its members to adhere to their code of ethical conduct. CallerLab does have an Ethics Committee and a Grievance Review Board. Complaints, that can not be resolved at the local level, can be referred to them. A copy of the Grievance Procedure is available from the Executive Secretary at the address above.

YOUR CANCELLED CHECK IS YOUR RECEIPT. 5 7 ROUND DANCE HIGHLIGHTS It is with heavy hearts your Round Dance Leaders Council must inform you that, due to inattention, a conflict of dates was generated with the Mini-Festival. This has prompted the Council to cancel the planned afternoon of rounds at St. Aloysius in Caldwell on November 17th. Whispering waves demand that an all-clear be sounded so that it will be known that in no way did your Council contribute to the aforementioned folly. the two annual afternoons of rounds are the only functions that sustain your Council and a great deal of effort is taken by ALL members to ensure the least amount of conflict. At a minimum of at least nine months before, research begins by obtain information from CARTS, DVRDLC, Hudson Valley Council, the NNJSDA as to what dates have planned affairs. Weighted along with holidays are considerations to impact ourselves as little as possible due to cuer members personal plans. Our principle in essence: "Great pains are taken to avoid conflicts with sister organizations and cuer members." We regret we have been excluded from providing you with our wonderful offer for an afternoon with great dimension of dancing. We can only reassure you that our team is currently hard at work trying to "pick" a spring date.

Our new Council officers for the '91-'92 season have been announced . Dave & Wendy Roberts will head up as Moderators, to be ably assisted by Secieiaiy, Herb Rivkin. I his team is a sure bet to give the Council good leadership. The latest good news is that Karen & Greg Kushla, utilizing the NNJRDLC scholarship, have returned from the Round-A-Rama Cuers School on a real high. Thrilled, excited, and overwhelmed are some of the ways to describe this very happy and delighted couple as they recant their wonderful experiences. Some wonderful news has been whispered by Mr. Stork. Seems he is planning to visit Dave & Wendy Roberts, bringing them an early Christmas present this December. Nifty! All of our very best wishes for good health all around. More good news - Doc Tirrell has had his back surgery, which was so successful the doctors sent him home after only 2 days. He is feeling so well that he is not even taking the medication they gave him for pain. Says he feels the best he has in many a month, and sounds it too. Expect he will beat the doctor's estimate on when he will be back on the dance floor. As is consistant nature for them, the seemingly tireless, ever-giving Tirrells treated the local leaders to a teaching clinic. They spent summer Mondays in their basement passing along some wonderful knowledge and wisdom. All leaders in attendance agreed this had to be the best ever. The Wagenhoffers iourneyed to the far reaches of Canada to attend the Montreal Convention. Once again, hearing the tail tales reienforces one's desire to attend this gala affair. Maybe next year? A fond greeting to the new dancers "discovering rounds." We welcome you and assure you that what all of you are learning will be a complement to your square dancing. To those who do not "square," this will serve to make you look sharp as you cut a floor. Nick & Carol Raspa

We appreciate all the prayers, cards and phone calls from our fellow dancers, sharing our concern over Doe's recent health problems. It really helps to know others care. It's a wonderful feeling to be able to join you all on the dance floor again. Doc & Peg Tirrell

Dear Readers, Not much room for the Editors this issue. We had a tough time fitting in all the maps, news and ads. So reporters, we had to edit all your wonderful articles for space. Then with Charlie away in school and Leo Bichler waiting for the refrigerator repairman, Greg worked on the ads & maps and Karen & Lois proofread for hours. Many thanks to all our hard working staff members. Kathy & Charlie 64
