By Nancy Hardy, Ferryhill

A regular part of our diet during the war

Started with pulses steeped the night before,

Into to the pantry there to find,

The largest pan of any kind.

Ham shanks, bacon bones came in a treat,

During the war years we had rations of meat,

Digging for Victory was the motto of the day,

All the vegetables home grown, come what may!
