2009 Detroit Titans Softball 5 Buysse Ballpark

Prior to the 2004 season, through the generosity of longtime supporter Roger Buysse, the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics made major renovations to the softball complex adding new chairback seating behind the backstop as well as a new scoreboard in right fi eld. For their continued support of Titan Athletics, the former “Titan Field” was renamed to “Buysse Ballpark” in honor of Mr. Buysse and his family. Over the summer, Mr. Buysse’s generosity helped the University of Detroit Mercy softball team have the use of a new bullpen and hitting cage area for the 2009 season. "Once again Mr. Buysse has stepped up and made the donation which allowed this bullpen and cage area to become a reality for our softball program," said head softball coach Bob Wilkerson. "We really appreciate his gracious support of Titan softball as a major sponsor over the last 15 years." The area is located down the left fi eld line at Buysse Ballpark, just past the home dugout, making it easily accessible for practice and in-game use. The bullpen section features throwing lanes complete with a netted back-stop in which two pitchers can warm up. The hitting cage is divided into three individual sections which are enclosed by netting with extra room at the beginning of the area, allowing players to use multiple stations at the same time. "I feel that Buysse Ballpark is very unique among all the fi elds in the Horizon League, and this area adds a new dimension which allows our current and future players to know that we are dedicated to giving them the best possible playing facility that we can," added Wilkerson. "Our overall goal, shared by Mr. Buysse, is to get this fi eld ready to host the Horizon League softball championships in 2011 and this certainly is another step in the right direction."

Head Coach 13th Season

2009 marks the 13th year that Bob Wilkerson has been at the reins of the UDM softball team. Wilkerson inherited the team in 1997 following a stint at Gabriel Richard High School in the area. Wilkerson compiled a 243-101 record while at Gabriel Richard and brought home the school's fi rst Catholic League Championship in 1990. In 1991, Wilkerson's team advanced to the state fi nals and dropped the title bout. In 1992, Wilkerson again took his team to the state fi nal, this time capturing the Michigan State Championship in Class C. For his accomplishments that season, Wilkerson was named the Coach of the Year by both the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. Since coming to UDM, Wilkerson has become the second winningest coach in UDM history with 166 victories. Wilkerson's 2006 team set a school-record when it recorded 13 Horizon League victories. His 1998 team advanced to the conference title game before falling to UIC, 5-0. Detroit's appearance in the 1998 title game was its fi rst appearance in the fi nale since 1992. Wilkerson's 2002 season saw the Titans fi nish the season with a 21-23 (7-5, HL) record, the Titans' most wins since 1994, when they also won 21 contests. A two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year (2002, 2005) Wilkerson has coached 10 First Team All-League selections, three Horizon League Players of the Year, and a Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, Wilkerson has overseen one of the smartest teams in the NCAA. For 10 straight seasons, the UDM softball team has been ranked in the top-10 in Division I in team GPA. In 2007, Wilkerson's team ranked eighth nationally with a cumulative team GPA of 3.448. The eighth place fi nish snapped a string of six consecutive seasons ranked in the top-fi ve. The 2007 team was led by Academic All-American, two-time Horizon League Player of the Year, and member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic Team, Kaleigh Rafter. A 1973 graduate of Mercy College in Detroit, Wilkerson was named the Catholic High School League (CHSL) and Catholic Coaches Association Person of the Year for 2007. Wilkerson, a 1996 inductee into the CHSL Hall of Fame, earned the award for his years of service to the Catholic Schools and to CHSL Athletics.
