Payment must accompany orders. Studies in the Anthropology of Visual Communication Studies is a publication of the Society. It is published two or three times a year and contains verbal and visual material describing and analyzing research in the areas of interest described under the purposes of the Society. Studies also publishes reviews of relevant books and larger review articles of groups of related books and other publications. It contains a section of correspondence and brief communication. The publication committee encourages members as well as non-members to submit written and visual materials for publication. Write to the Studies editor for additional instructions for submission. From time to time SAVICOM will publish special publications related to the interests of its members. The following is a list of current publications: SA VICOM Newsletter The Society's newsletter is published three times a year. Hall, author of the Silent Language, The Hidden Dimension and other works, is allowing SAVICOM to publish this new handbook detailing his methodology for proxemic research. The Handbook includes computer programs, illustrations about the placement of cameras and observers, and an extensive bibliography. It is available to members at $3.00 per copy and to non-members and institutions at $5.00. In order to keep the price down for teachers, students and active workers in proxemic research, Hall is not accepting royalties on sales to SA VI COM members.     Beyond Ethnographic Film: John Marshall and the Marshall Family Kalahari Project Carolyn Anderson Professor Emerita, University of Massachusetts American filmmaker John Marshall was a major figure in ethnographic film throughout the second half of the twentieth century; his influence continues into the twentieth-first. Marshall’s career trajectory anticipated and paralleled major shifts in documentary and ethnographic film and challenged notions of the links between the observer and the observed. The mythic narrative style he embraced at the beginning of his career in the early 1950s was soon abandoned for the observational clarity of direct cinema. Recording social interactions in Africa and the United States, Marshall pioneered short “sequence films” in the 1960s, concentrating on long takes, without directorial or editorial modifications. Provoked by the crisis in representation that enveloped anthropology and ethnographic filmmaking, beginning in the late 1970s, his films took a reflexive turn in which the interventions and effects of filming were made explicit. Throughout the last decades of his life, Marshall concentrated on forms of participatory cinema, focusing on collaborative productions driven by the economic and political needs of his subjects. Marshall’s determination to grow as a filmmaker and a world citizen shaped his impact on ethnographic film. When asked the ubiquitous questions of how his filmmaking career began, John Marshall responded, “Well, I started by default” and then told a story that he loved to tell about his father and the family expeditions to Africa.1 It is a remarkable story of the beginnings of what became a remarkable career. John’s father, Laurence Kennedy Marshall, and his mother, Lorna McLean Marshall, both had an interest in anthropology, although neither was a trained anthropologist.

Since visual anthropology was born, there have been different ways to convey this idea. Through a review of the documentary films produced from the fifties until the present time, the paper shows the historical changes on the film industry priorities with regard to world music portrayals. The dialectal tension between fictional and ethnographic approaches has been a constant. This paper supports the premise that auteur films can reach ethnomusicological level, although not being scientific, and have an added poetical value of great help in this field.

    vol. 2, n. 1, June 2013, pp. 95-106 | DOI: 10.12835/ve2013.1-0019 | www.vejournal.org | ISSN 2281-1605 ________________________________________________________________________ Nicola Scaldaferri Università di Milano, Italy Conversation with Hugo Zemp Hugo Zemp Biographical Note (from www.der.org) As an adolescent Hugo Zemp wanted to become a jazz musician, and at the age of 20 entered in a three-year program of percussion at the Conservatory of Basle, his hometown in Switzerland. In 1958, at the age of 21, he travelled to Côte d'Ivoire to experience African percussion. There he met André Schaeffner, the father of French ethnomusicology from the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, and his wife Denise Paulme, professor of anthropology. Seeing Zemp's enthusiasm for African music, they invited him to come to Paris to study. He finished his musical studies and began studying anthropology, linguistic and ethnomusicology in Paris. Conducting his fieldwork between 1961 and 1967 in the Côte d'Ivoire, mostly among the Dan people, Zemp wrote a doctoral thesis that garnered interest among French- and English-speaking ethnomusicologists studying West African music. He also made shorter stays among other peoples to document and record their music, among these the Senufo, whose balafon music impressed him so much that he returned to Côte d'Ivoire forty years after his first encounter to make the four-film series Masters of the Balafon. In 1967 he became researcher at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) at the Ethnomusicology Department of the Musée de l'Homme, in Paris, where he worked until his retirement in 2004.

HEALTH: THE SOCIAL PRACTICE OF THE CINEMA AND THE INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH ON RESEARCH ABSTRACT We propose in this paper a theoretical purview with- in the fields of Anthropology and Cinema, Public Health, Creative Processes, and Youth Studies to ana- lyze youth film production on the outskirts of São Paulo, as a social practice tied to cinema. Data from this academic literature was triangulated with that the data collected in ethnographic research and data constituted through the analysis of a short-film vir- tual bank, projecting media technologies as sources of information on behavioral and social character- istics.
