  • (Murderbot Diaries 06) Martha Wells No, I Didn't Kill the Dead Human. If I
Fugitive Telemetry (Murderbot Diaries 06) Martha Wells No, I didn’t kill the dead human. If I had, I wouldn’t dump the body in the station mall. When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people – who knew?) Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans! Again! This sixth entry into the series is a standalone novella, set before All Systems Red. Love, love, love it! Cannot recommend highly enough! (If you want one, but we don’t have any in the shop – please, do order one, to stake your claim on the stock we will receive!) If you haven’t read the preceding books in Wells’ fab series – then start with All Systems Red (HC, $29.99) (see #2). Science fiction novella | HC | $29.99 All Systems Red (Murderbot Diaries 01) Martha Wells In a corporate-dominated, spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ’droid – a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though, never out loud) as ‘Murderbot’.

  • Suggested Reading Orders of Books and Stories in Anne Mccaffrey's Pern Series
SUGGESTED READING ORDERS OF BOOKS AND STORIES IN ANNE MCCAFFREY’S PERN SERIES Fans often ask for advice as to the order in which to read the books in the popular Dragonriders of Pern© series. Anne McCaffrey herself politely suggests you should read them in the order in which they were published. For most of the series written by Anne the chronological order is also the publication order but the Pern Series is the notable exception. For those of you who prefer to read (or re-read) the Pern Series in chronological or story line order we are including a second, chronological list. However, this list cannot give a pure chronological order because that is an impossibility – some of the books and stories take place during the same time period. For example, a book like The Renegades of Pern spans a long pe- riod of Pern’s history in the run up to and during the Ninth Pass. As such, it runs parallel to several other books in the series. A graphic display of chronological order is added to illustrate this and as a handy overview. 1. Pern Books and Stories in order of Publication (stories in italics) • Dragonflight (1968) The short stories Weyr Search and Dragonrider are incorporated in this book. • Dragonquest (1971) • Dragonsong (1976) • Dragonsinger 1977) • The Smallest Dragonboy, in: Get Off The Unicorn (1977) and A Gift of Dragons (2002) • The White Dragon (1978) The earlier publication A Time When (1975) is incorporated in this book. • Dragondrums (1979) • Moreta: Dragonlady Of Pern (1983) • Nerilka’s Story (1984) • Dragonsdawn (1988) • The Impression, in: The Dragonlover’s Guide To Pern (1989) • The Renegades of Pern (1989) • All The Weyrs of Pern (1991) • Rescue Run (1991) • The Dolphin’s Bell (1993) • The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (1993) The earlier publications Rescue Run (1991) and The Dolphin’s Bell (1993) are incorporated in this book.

  • Be Mindful of the Future: Information and Knowledge Management in Star Wars Tie-In Fiction
Volume 13 Spring 2017 djim.management.dal.ca | Be mindful of the future: information and knowledge management in Star Wars tie-in fiction Diana Castillo School of Information Management, Dalhousie University Abstract In the last fifty years, media franchises have been using tie-in fiction to expand their universes and tell stories outside the main source material. This paper examines how information management is used specifically in Star Wars tie-in fiction and its recent transition to using knowledge management. To start, this paper looks at the history of tie-in fiction from its roots in the 1960s to the modern day, before transitioning to the role of brand managers and editors as information managers. Then, this paper documents the history of Star Wars tie-in fiction and how information management strategies were implemented through 2014 and how it impacted the franchise’s internal continuity. Finally, this paper examines the recent move towards a unified canon and how this shift towards knowledge management has impacted storytelling. This paper concludes that while it is too early to evaluate its results, Star Wars was uniquely situated among franchises to move towards knowledge management through its prior information management efforts. Fantastic vision, great story, some slight flaws.By LiamI loved this book. A great read, engaging and fascinating, this book exemplifies superb science fiction writing. The concepts of the story and the realism (for the most part) of the science are huge strong points for the book. Of the four parts I found the first two much stronger and more compelling than the last two. The story took a different approach in the latter half ndash; perhaps intentionally ndash; however it did feel as though there was slightly less effort put into the cohesion and realism of the second half. There were aspects that were quite engaging and strong, but not like the first half. Additionally, for such a scientifically detailed and strong book, the quick ending seemed not only rushed but questionable scientifically. The ending and in fact the entire fourth part had a slight taste of being an afterthought, in some ways I would have preferred a more fleshed out part three and left it with a small epilogue on the end. However, I am only being this critical of the book because I truly loved it and think it is one of the best stories I've heard seen or read, period.

  • Emerging Legal and Policy Trends in Recent Robot Science Fiction
Emerging Legal and Policy Trends in Recent Robot Science Fiction Robin R. Murphy Computer Science and Engineering Texas A&M University College Station, TX 77845 [email protected] Introduction This paper examines popular print science fiction for the past five years (2013-2018) in which robots were essential to the fictional narrative and the plot depended on a legal or policy issue related to robots. It follows in the footsteps of other works which have examined legal and policy trends in science fiction [1] and graphic novels [2], but this paper is specific to robots. An analysis of five books and one novella identified four concerns about robots emerging in the public consciousness: enabling false identities through telepresence, granting robot rights, outlawing artificial intelligence for robots, and ineffectual or missing product liability. Methodolology for Selecting the Candidate Print Fiction While robotics is a popular topic in print science fiction, fictional treatments do not necessarily touch on legal or policy issues. Out of 44 candidate works, only six involved legal or policy issues. Candidates for consideration were identified in two ways. One, the nominees for the 2013-2018 Hugo and Nebulas awards were examined for works dealing with robots. The other was a query of science fiction robot best sellers at Amazon. A candidate work of fiction had to contain at least one robot that served either a character or contributed to the plot such that the robot could not be removed without changing the story. For example, in Raven Stratagem, robots did not appear to be more than background props throughout the book but suddenly proved pivotal to the ending of the novel.
