  • Brief to the Ontario Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform Submitted By
Brief to the Ontario Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform Submitted by Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) 290A Danforth Avenue Toronto, ON M4K 1N6 Tel: 416-469-2446 Email: [email protected] January 2007 Mr Chair, Members of the Assembly: Thank you for this opportunity to discuss proposals for meaningful electoral reform in Ontario, and proportional representation in particular. First, we would like to introduce ourselves: The CPC (Ontario) is a registered political party in Ontario. We became a registered party in 1975 after a mass province wide campaign to collect 10,000 signatures of registered voters, each of whom agreed that the CPC (Ontario) should be registered, should have the right to continue to participate in provincial elections and in the electoral life of the province. In fact, the CPC has participated in the political life of this province since its birth in Guelph, Ontario in 1921. We are one of the oldest parties in Ontario, and in Canada. Until 1972, parties were not required to register provincially or federally; they simply put forward their policies and candidates following the requirements for nomination of candidates, which at that time were a nomination deposit, nomination signatures, and a financial accounting following the campaign. When provincial legislation was passed in the early 70s requiring political parties to register in order to participate in provincial election campaigns, the requirements for registration were that the party seeking registration either had to have members already elected to the Legislature; or had to collect the signatures of at least 10,000 qualified voters who supported that party’s registration.

  • BYTE Seeks to Engage Young Voters in All Candidates Forum
BYTE seeks to engage young voters in all-candidates forum Event date: October 7th, 5:30-7 Baked Café Free September 23, 2015 WHITEHORSE - For Immediate Release BYTE is seeking to engage young voters in the lead-up to the federal election with an all-candidates forum for youth. The event will take place on October 7th at 5:30pm at Baked Café and targets young voters and young prospective voters aged 18-35. All four Yukon federal candidates—Ryan Leef, Larry Bagnell, Melissa Atkinson, and Frank De Jong—have confirmed that they will attend the event, which will be moderated by BYTE’s Communications Coordinator Kara Johancsik “Young Yukoners are much less likely to vote than older generations,” says Johancsik. “Our goal with this forum is to put youth issues on the federal candidates’ agendas and to educate young people about federal party platforms with respect to issues that affect them.” The event is part of BYTE’s Yukon Youth Want campaign, a non-partisan social media campaign that asks young Yukoners to share youth issues with local politicians. BYTE has been collecting photographs of young people from across the territory holding up their own statement of what Yukon youth want and posting them to the BYTE Facebook page. “We often hear young people talk about housing, job security, student debt, access to education, and healthcare,” says Johancsik. “We plan to bring the issues expressed in the Yukon Youth Want campaign to the all-candidates forum.” The forum will start off with a few questions formulated by BYTE in light of the Yukon Youth Want campaign, and then audience members will get the chance to ask their own questions.

  • Letter to Prime Minister Paul Martin, 29 September 2004
September 29, 2004 The Right Honourable Paul Martin Prime Minister of Canada 80 Wellington Street Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A2 RE: An Open Letter to Prime Minister Paul Martin Calling for the Cancellation of the Debts of the Poorest Countries. Dear Prime Minister, Perhaps more than any other G•7 leader, you are aware of the importance of debt cancellation for impoverished countries, and the failures of past strategies to address the debt issue. Despite important gains secured by current debt relief strategies, poor countries still spend more on debt service than on health and education. Countries in Africa continue to pay more for debt servicing than they receive in development assistance, and in most cases this amount is greater than their budgets for health and education combined. As you know, in the coming days the world's richest countries may be set to take a dramatic and necessary step to cancel the debt of some of the poorest countries. We call on the Government of Canada to ensure that the lessons of past efforts are incorporated in new plans, and that the political will is shown by G•7 leaders to ensure that poor countries are finally able to get off of the debt treadmill. We call on Canada to support the immediate and unconditional cancellation of 100% of the debts owed by all low•income countries to multilateral financial institutions; recognition that neither the people of Iraq, nor citizens of other countries formerly ruled by dictators, should be obliged to repay odious debts; that countries who receive debt cancellation be free to implement their own national development strategies with no strings attached to cancellation; and, credit on accessible terms for the world's poorest countries.

Many of its founding members had belonged to groups such as the Socialist Party of Canada, One Big Union, the Socialist Labor Party, the Industrial Workers of the World, and other socialist, Marxist or Labour parties or clubs. The party was founded as the Canadian section of the Comintern, and was thus similar to Communist parties around the world. The party alternated between legality and illegality during the 1920s and 1930s. It was initially illegal, and created the Workers' Party of Canada in 1922 as its public face.
