The Guild Show 2017 Classes & Special Events

Tuesday, September 19 to Sunday, September 24, 2017

Hartford/Windsor Marriott Airport Windsor, CT The Guild Show 2017 The International Guild of Miniature Artisans invites you to join us at the 2017 Guild Show, September 19–24, at the new location, the Hartford/Windsor Marriott Airport, Windsor, CT. This new location offers easy access via all modes of transportation, including a free shuttle between the airport and hotel. There are a wide variety of cultural attractions in the area, from theater to museums, historic homes and natural attractions. The show location is eminently suitable for a vacation with all age groups and interest levels.

The Guild is known around the world for its mission of promoting miniatures as an art form, and for the educa- tional programs it sponsors in support of that mission. At the Guild Show, you will be able to take part in classes, join a tour of a historic home, or attend a theater production, as well as many other options. The show itself will feature an outstanding selection of dealers from around the world, exhibits, silent and live auctions, a unique shopping area for younger miniaturists and free crafting for families on Sunday afternoon. Throughout the week, participants will enjoy the company of their fellow miniaturists in a warm and inclusive environment.

Following are the classes offered by exceptional instructors. Because of occasional poor lighting in hotel class rooms, students are urged to include lighting and magnification in their tool kits.

- 1 - Classes

TUESDAY — FRIDAY 4-DAY CLASS | SEPTEMBER 19–22

❖ Geppetto Instructor: Jeanne Rullie, IGMA Artisan 8:00am – 5:30pm

In this class, students will create a 1/12 scale Geppetto doll in polymer clay, perhaps for their toy shop. Starting with the instructor’s basic mold for the head and torso, students will learn sculpting techniques to add expres- sion and character. Next the hands will be free sculpted complete with fingernails, veins and knuckles. Legs and feet will then be shaped and shoes made from colored polymer clays will be applied. All parts will be wired for assembly and painted with Genesis paints. Geppetto will be costumed with a provided pattern and fabric. Facial hair will be applied to complete the doll. Time will not allow for Pinocchio to be made but instructions will be provided for students to create one on their own.

It is likely that the project will be completed in class. The instructor will bring all necessary supplies. Students should bring a chair or stool for Geppetto and any preferred tools. Special sculpting tools will be available for students to use with the option of buying.

Skill Level: Beginner Class Limit: 10 Class Fee: $575.00 for Guild members/$585.00 for non-members Last date to register for this class: September 10

Each registrant may bring one project to work on for 1, 2, or 3 days. The instruc- tor will accept only a limited number of participants so that each project will be given the proper attention. After regis- tering, the instructor will contact each student to discuss their particular project and the needed tools and materials.

The greatest satisfaction is finishing a project that deserves to be completed and appreciated. You will truly be glad you did!

Skill Level: All levels Class Limit: 6 per day Class Fee: $115.00 per day for Guild members, $125.00 per day for non-members Last date to register for this class: August 1

- 3 - WEDNESDAY – FRIDAY 3-DAY CLASS | SEPTEMBER 20–22

❖ Flight of Fancy Instructor: Michael Yurkovic, IGMA Artisan 9:00am – 6:00pm

The subject of this class is a 1/2 inch scale Victorian horse and carriage, but with a unique Steam Punk twist. The elegant carriage takes its place behind the horse, ready for the next passengers to embark on an evening ride in comfort and style. The viewer will notice that the carriage has no wheels, instead it is kept aloft by an ornate hot air balloon! What a way to travel!

The class will depict the horse, carriage, and hot air balloon in 1/2 inch scale, with an overall size of 10 1/2” long by 11 1/2” tall and approximately 8” deep. The piece will sit on a wooden base with cobblestone texture. The carriage and balloon will be supported by a metal rod hidden in the structure that will give the illusion that the carriage and balloon are actually floating. The balloon itself measures 7 1/2” in diameter, it is constructed of an upper and lower half to be supplied by the in- structor and ready for decoration. The upper and lower halves of the balloon are already 3D printed, and molded, so there will be a set of parts for each student. The carriage will be mainly of wood construction, with metal detail parts.

Jamie Carrington is creating a set of three figures to accompany the piece. Each will be available to purchase from him. The figures include a carriage driver and a lovely couple going out for an evening ride.

It is recommended that students bring to class basic tools such as X-acto knives, wood glue, and tweezers. A full list will be sent to students prior to the show.

Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced Class Limit: 8 Class Fee: $775.00 for Guild members/$785.00 for non-members Last date to register for this class: August 28
