  • Advisory Circular 90-109A
U.S. Department Advisory of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration Circular Subject: Transition to Unfamiliar Aircraft Date: 6/29/15 AC No: 90-109A Initiated by: AFS-800 Change: 1. PURPOSE. This advisory circular (AC) is intended to help plan the transition to any unfamiliar fixed-wing airplanes, including type-certificated (TC) and/or experimental airplanes. It provides information and guidance to owners and pilots of experimental, simple, complex, high-performance, and/or unfamiliar airplanes. It also provides information to flight instructors who teach in these airplanes. This information and guidance contains recommendations for training experience for pilots of experimental airplanes in a variety of groupings based on performance and handling characteristics. This AC does not address the testing of newly built experimental airplanes. The current edition of AC 90-89, Amateur-Built Aircraft and Ultralight Flight Testing Handbook, provides information on such testing. However, if a pilot is planning to participate in a flight test program in an unfamiliar and/or experimental airplane, this AC should be used to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely accomplish the test program utilizing the guidance found in AC 90-89. 2. CANCELLATION. AC 90-109, Airmen Transition to Experimental or Unfamiliar Airplanes, dated March 30, 2011, is canceled. 3. BACKGROUND. a. Transitioning between Aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recognized a need to devote resources to preventing accidents occurring because of inadequate training when transitioning between aircraft types. Specifically, accidents resulting from loss of aircraft control or situational awareness frequently result from pilot unpreparedness for challenges presented by the aircraft.

  • Reverse Engineering of Micro Light Aircraft Systems and Design
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by UTHM Institutional Repository REVERSE ENGINEERING OF MICRO LIGHT AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS AND DESIGN WAN AZIZURRAHMAN BIN WAN HASSAN A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirement for the award of the Degree of Master of Mechanical Engineering FACULTY OF MECHANICAL AND MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING UNIVERSITI TUN HUSSEIN ONN MALAYSIA JUNE 2014 i ABSTRACT Microlight industry has become popular nowadays and has its own fan in Malaysia. In western side of the world, the microlight boom which started in late 1970s and 1980s was driven by a number of factors that permitted practical flying machines to be produced at lower cost than ever before. Here in Malaysia, most of the aircraft were imported from European and US as the manufacturer are from there. To reduce the cost of manufacturing an aircraft, this paper had tried to study the construction of an aircraft by using proposed reverse engineering process. A microlight aircraft model Quicksilver GT500 has become a subject of study and Autodesk Inventor software is selected as preferred software to remodel the aircraft structure. Remodelling process of the aircraft started with taking actual measurement on the site aircraft guided with manual book of aircraft assembly and maintenance as reference. The CAD model of the aircraft then imposed stress load analysis to study the effect of proposed material to the structure reliability. Maximum take-off weight of aircraft of 1000lbs (454 kg) was used as maximum load on the aircraft while in cruise mode. Three types of aluminium alloy of Al2024, Al6061, and Al7075 have been studied on their influences to the wing structure design.

NTSB N-No Date Make Model Factual Released Narrative THE PURPOSE OF THE FLT WAS TO DEMONSTRATE THE ACFT TO A POSSIBLE BUYER. WHILE TAKING OFF, THE ENG LOST POWER SHORTLY AFTER THE ACFT LIFTED OFF AT ABOUT MID-FIELD. THE PLT ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE ACFT & LAND ON A CROSS-RUNWAY. HOWEVER, DUE TO HIS LOW SPEED & LOW ALT, HE WAS UNABLE TO ALIGN THE ACFT WITH THE RWY. THE ACFT WAS LANDED IN GRASS WHERE IT SUBSEQUENTLY NOSED OVER. THE ENG HAD ONLY 1 HR OF FLT TIME SINCE IT HAD BEEN OVERHAULED. DURING THE CHI85LA220 N6458S 6/2/1985 CESSNA 150H OVERHAUL, A FACET AEROSPACE CARBURETOR FLOAT KIT, NUMBER 666-915, HAD BEEN INSTALLED IN THE MARVEL SCHEBLER CARBURETOR BY THE PLT/OWNER, WHO WAS ALSO AN A&P MECHANIC. AN EXAM REVEALED THAT SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER A1- 84A WAS NOT COMPLIED WITH, THE FLOAT DROP WAS NOT ADJUSTED PROPERLY, FUEL FLOW WAS LOW, THE THROTTLE SHAFT WAS LOOSE, THE ACCELERATOR PUMP WAS DRY ROTTED & CRACKED, & THE BUTTERFLY VALVE WAS INSTALLED UPSIDE DOWN. HISTORY OF FLIGHT On February 18, 1995, approximately 0800 Pacific standard time, a Bruce Tifft Varieze, N115EZ, collided with trees near Tiller, Oregon. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was substantially damaged and the private pilot and his passenger were fatally injured. The flight had departed from Cottage Grove, Oregon, on February 18, 1995, at 0730 and was en route to Mohave, California. The individual in California, whom the pilot was going to visit, stated that the intended route of flight was to follow southbound Interstate 5 to California.
