Assizes of July 1564

177. Parker (or Coye), Thomas, and Yonge, Robert, labourers of Southwark, indicted for grand larceny. On 5 May 1564 they broke by night into the close of William Saunder, esq., at Ewell and stole 9 sheets (£2) and a tablecloth (6s 8d). Parker found guilty; allowed clergy and delivered to Mr. Fynche, rector of . Yonge found not guilty.

Assizes of December 1564

202. Worsley, Eden, of Ewell, spinster, indicted for murder by witchcraft. On 4 July 1564 at Ewell she bewitched to death Elizabeth Bybye, daughter of Robert Bybye. Tried at the next assizes and found guilty; to hang.

Assizes of July 1568

364. Hall, Stephen, of Epsom, labourer, indicted for grand larceny. On 10 June 1568 he broke into the close of John Tegge at Epsom and stole 4 lambs (10s). Not guilty.

Assizes of February 1569

390. Tyckner, Thomas, of Ewell, labourer, indicted for grand larceny. On 25 Sept. 1568 he broke into the close of William Saunders, esq., at Epsom and stole a grey horse (26s 8d). Guilty; to hang.

Assizes of February 1573

630. Robinson, Thomas, of Epsom, tailor, indicted for barratry. On 16 Dec. 1572 and other occasions at Epsom he was a common barrator, stirring up discord among his neighbours, etc. Endorsed ‘Billa vera: That he is troblesome amonge his neighbours. Ignoramus: That he is a comen barrator’. Verdict unknown.

705. Dyngeley, Henry, butcher, Dyngeley, Joan, spinster, and Trye, Dorothy, spinster, of Ewell, and Rogers, Robert, of Malden, husbandman, indicted for disseisin. On 19 May 1574 they broke into ‘Heydons’, a messuage and 3 acres at Ewell,and disseised Francis Saunder, gent., of the freehold. Verdict unknown.

Assizes of February 1585

1543. Denman, Henry, of Southwark, petty chapman, indicted for grand larceny. On 22 Nov. 1584 at Ewell he stole 10 sheep (£2) from John Woodwarde, 7 sheep (30s) from John Kerrell and 32 sheep (£7) from George Kinge. (Denman had also been tried for breaking into a house at Limpsfield and stealing goods in 1581). Raynolls, William, of Southwark, butcher, is indicted as an accessory. (Raynolls had also been tried for stealing sheep from Southwark and Horsleydown in 1585 and for acting as accessory to the theft of clothes from in 1586). Denman found guilty; remanded because he is said to have had the book before. Raynolls found not guilty; bailed because he is a man of ill behaviour.

Assizes of February 1586

1625. Mathew, Elizabeth, of Epsom, spinster, indicted for grand larceny. On 27 Sept. 1585 she broke into the house of Robert Byne of Epsom, labourer, and stole 3 pieces of money (3s), a silver ring (20d) and a shirt (6d). Not guilty.

1656. Born, Robert, of Epsom, indicted for petty larceny. At a view of frank-pledge held by [...] Kedermister, gent., seneschal, a jury – Roger Lambert, George Gouldsmith, Thomas Burde, Thomas […], […] Woodman, Emery Tailor, Ralph Paris, Henry Charlewood, William Rogers, Henry Parker, William Richbell, Alan Tailor, Robert Michell – presented that on 8 June 1585 at Epsom he stole a sheep (10d) from […] Dawborne of Leatherhead, yeoman. [damaged]. The indictment has no value.

1716. Browne, Elizabeth, wife of Cuthbert Browne, gent., Horde, Anne, spinster, Horde, Alan, gent., and Horde, Barbara, his wife, of Ewell, indicted for recusancy for one month. Verdict unknown.

Assizes of February 1587

1745. Turpyn, Priscilla, of Southwark, spinster, indicted for grand larceny. On 28 Oct. 15 86 at Ewell she stole a kirtle (4s), a hat (2s), a pair of knitted stockings (2s), a pair of garters (3d), a pair of shoes (1s), a smock (2s) and several pieces of linen (7s) from Owen Aphue. Guilty; remanded on plea of pregnancy.

Assizes of July 1587

1813. Gest, Lionel, gent., Maundy (or Percyvall or Wale), William, yeoman, and Saunders, Edward, yeoman, of London, indicted for highway robbery. On 28 Sept. 1586 they assaulted George Shelley, gent., in the highway at Coulsdon and stole from him £34 in money. On 28 Sept. 1586 they assaulted John Turner in the highway at Ewell and stole from him a gold chain (£29 10s), £34 in money, 4 shirts (£2) 13 bands and 6 pairs of handruffs (£4), a pair of linen boothose (10s), 6 socks, 2 kerchiefs and a pillow-bar (30s), a pair of worsted stockings (10s), a pair of garters, a comb and a ‘benche’ (6s), a pistolet (£1), a sword (26s 8d) and a gold ring (26s). Maundy found guilty; to hang. Gest and Saunders are at large.

1821. Payne, William, of Southwark, yeoman, indicted for grand larceny. On 31 July 1585 at Nonsuch he stole a sword (26s) from John Roberts. At large. Pardoned by general .

Assizes of February 1588

1886. Ricatts, John, constable of Ewell, indicted for a voluntary escape. On 2 Nov. 1587 Ricatts arrested Alan Cox of Ewell, innholder, by virtue of a warrant issued by Richard Burton, J.P., but on the same day voluntarily allowed him to escape. Confessed to a negligent escape and submitted to his fine.

1890. Inquisition held at Epsom, 31 Jan. 1588, before John Derrick, , on the body of Edward Dewdney, aged 14 years, servant of Robert Arnolde of Leatherhead, yeoman. A jury – William Parker, Nicholas Humfrey, John […], John Stynte, Thomas Mathey, William Sewell, Edmund Byby, John Comber, John Richebell, George Vergyn, […] Thornecombe – found that on 22 Jan. Dewdney was returning from London to Leatherhead on a horse belonging to his master loaded with a ‘pannell’ and 2 panniers. At Mapleton Bush near Epsom the horse stumbled and fell into the ditch, killing Dewdney. [damaged].

2041. Shere, Richard, weaver, Wakelyn, Edward, labourer, and Kerry, William husbandman, of Farncombe in Godalming, indicted for grand larceny. On 5 Feb. 1590 at Guildford they stole 6 pigs (£3) from John Birchall. On 11 Feb. 1590 Shere, Wakelyn, Flynt, William, of Ewell, yeoman, and Forde, John, of Guildford, shoemaker, broke by night into Lower Barnfield in Shalford and stole 4 sheep (28s) belonging to John Birchall. Shere found guilty; allowed clergy. Flint tried in July 1590 and found not guilty. Ford tried in Feb. 1591 and found not guilty. The others are at large.

Assizes of February 1591

2140. Baker, George, butcher, and Roffwell, Peter, surgeon, of Leatherhead, indicted for grand larceny. On 31 Jan. 1591 at Epsom they stole 2 sheep (12s) belonging to Roger Lamberd from Thomas Lucas of Epsom. (Baker had also been tried for acting as accessory to the theft of a sheep at Addington Heath in 1592, and of a cow at Reigate and a cow at Ashtead in 1591). Baker found not guilty. Roffwell is at large.

Proclaimed according to statute.

2256. Hardinge, Robert, of Worth, , glover, indicted for grand larceny. On 18 July 1591 at Reigate he stole a red cow (30s) from Thomas Baker. On 18 July 1591 at Reigate he stole a cow (30s) from Nicholas Killick. On 20 Jan. 1592 at Nutfield he stole a sheep (5s) from John Tailor. On 4 May 1591 at Epsom he stole a steer (£2) and a heifer (30s) from John Crowther. On 30 Apr. 1591 at Banstead he stole a red cow (£2) from Richard Hubbard. (Hardinge had also been tried for stealing a sheep at Nutfield, 1590). Confessed to the last count, found guilty on the rest; allowed clergy.

Assizes of July 1592

2308. Goodhelp, George, of Nonsuch, yeoman, indicted for felonious killing. On 6 May 1592 at Ewell he attacked Robert Brice with a dagger (6d), inflicting wounds from which he died on the following day. Guilty; allowed clergy.

2258. Netlingham, Thomas, of Epsom, labourer, indicted for grand larceny. On 9 Dec. 1591 he broke into the house of Michael Wood at Coulsdon and stole a shirt (3d), a pair of shoes (8d), a pair of stockings (1s) and £5 6s in money. Guilty; allowed clergy.

Assizes of March 1594

2379. Wright, Peter, of Chobham, labourer, indicted for grand larceny. On 18 Oct. 1593 he broke into the house of Richard Beckensall at Epsom, while Elizabeth Mathie was there, and stole £7 in money, 6 gold rings (£2), a silver ring (1s), a coral and silver bracelet (2s), a bundle of bugle lace (10s), 12 handkerchiefs (26s), 3 falling-bands (3s), a pair of sheets (10s), 2 silk girdles (3s) and 3 ruff bands (£1). Guilty; to hang.

2460. Cuddington, Thomas, of Ewell, husbandman, indicted for grand larceny. On 31 Aug. 1594 at Ewell he stole 3 sheep (8s) from Thomas Dyngley, 3 sheep (7s) from Richard Grace and a sheep (3s 4d) from Thomas Blundell. On 8 Sept. 1594 at Ashtead he stole 4 sheep (13s) from William Jurden. On 10 Oct. 1594 at Ditton he stole 2 lambs (4s) from Nicholas Kempe. (Cuddington appears again in no. 2668 below). Guilty; allowed clergy.

2489. Michill, Roger, of Ewell, husbandman, indicted for grand larceny. On 4 Nov. 1594 at Chilworth he stole a leather doublet (2s), a coat (5s) and 10s 11d. in money from George Whitmore, servant of William Morgann, esq. At large.

Assizes of February 1597

2668. Cuddington, Thomas, indicted for drawing a weapon in church. At Croydon sessions, 11 Jan. 1597, a grand jury presented that on 27 Nov. 1596 in Ewell parish church he drew his dagger and struck and wounded Elizabeth Hodskynson. (Cuddington had appeared in no. 2460 above). Not guilty.

2771. Forde, John, of Ewell, labourer, indicted for petty larceny. On 16 Apr. 1597 at Ewell he stole a pair of sheets (4d), a shirt (3d), a table-napkin (2d) and 2 aprons (2d) from Thomas Gunne. Dead.

Assizes of July 1598

2875. Constable, Francis, husbandman, and Kneler, John, labourer, of Epsom, indicted for grand larceny. At Reigate sessions, 18 Apr. 1598, a grand jury presented that on 16 Feb. 1598 at Epsom they stole 2 sheep (10s) from George Hyll. Constable found not guilty. Kneler found guilty to the value of 10d.; whipped.

2886. Mitchell, Roger, of Epsom, and Butt, William, of Chessington, labourers, indicted for petty larceny. On 5 Oct. 1597 at Epsom they stole a sheep (10d) from an unknown man. Mitchell confessed; whipped. Butt is at large.

Assizes of July 1600

3017. Smyth, John, shoemaker, and Lamberde, Ralph, labourer, of Ewell, indicted for burglary. On 12 May 1600 they burgled the house of Edmund Coddington at Ewell and stole a [unclear] (10s), 3 shirts (18d), 5 bands (10d) and 8s in money. On 8 Apr. 1600 they burgled the house of John Rolfe at Ewell and stole a blue coat (6s), 4 sheets (16s), 4 shirts (6s), a petticoat (20d), a pair of stockings (1s), 4 aprons (3s), 4 kerchiefs (4s) and £3 in money. Guilty; to hang.

817. Gardiner, Michael, of Epsom, labourer, indicted for grand larceny. On 4 June 1616 at Epsom he stole a sheep (8s) from William Blakes and 3 sheep (24s) from Thomas Cooke. On 1 May 1616 at Epsom he stole 7s in money from Edward Gardiner. On 2 May 1616 before Sir William Minn, J.P., Edward Gardener, butcher, and William Blake and John Cooke, yeomen, of Epsom, entered recognizances to give evidence against Gardiner. Confessed to the first count, found guilty on the second; allowed clergy and sent to the house of correction.

828. Stillwell, Robert, of Epsom, husbandman, indicted for grand larceny. On 12 June 1616 he broke into the house of Jane Ritchbell at Epsom and stole a jerkin (1s) and a pair of stockings (2s) belonging to Henry Wicker. On 10 June 1616 at Ashtead he stole a sorrel gelding (£4) from Jane Saunders, widow. On 23 May 1616 at Ashtead he stole a brown mare (£2) from Elizabeth Jourden. On 11 June 1616 before Sir Francis Stidolf, J.P., Thomas Sawnders of Ashtead, gent., entered a recognizance to give evidence against Stillwell, and on 12 June, Henry Wickar of Headley, yeoman, William Steere of Ashtead, yeoman, and John Saunder of Ashtead, yeoman, entered recognizances for same purpose. Guilty; to hang.

886. Smyth, William, of Ewell, labourer, indicted for petty larceny. On 11 Apr. 1617 at Ewell he stole 4 towels (10d) from Robert Savadge. On 18 Apr. 1617 at Ewell he stole a pewter candlestick (4d) and a pewter dish (4d) from William Tailor. Averie, Ursula, wife of John Averie of Hook in Kingston upon Thames, is indicted as an accessory. On 13 Apr. 1617 before Sir Nicholas Saunders, J.P., Robert Savage, yeoman, and William Taylor, tailor, of Ewell, entered recognizances to give evidence against Smyth and Averie, and on 14 Apr. On 17 Jan. 1618 at Ewell she stole a hat (5s), a holland kerchief (2s), 2 coifs (4s), a waistcoat (5s), a petticoat (25s), an apron (5s), a red petticoat (3s 4d), a pair of stockings (2s) and a purse (2d) containing 16s in money from John Chapman and 2 aprons (2s) and 1s in money from Edward Chapman. Guilty to the value of 10d; whipped.

(Benfield had also been tried for stealing property at Chipstead – he was then ‘of Chipstead’ – in 1620, and at Kingston – he was then ‘of Kingston’ – in 1621, and at Sutton – he was then ‘of Sutton’ – in 1622).
