Microsoft (MSFT) released a formal statement last week confirming the hiring of Sean Suchter, an important tech leader at Yahoo (YHOO), from Satya Nadella, SVP for MSN Search, Portal and Advertising: "We are very pleased to confirm that Sean Suchter will be joining Microsoft as the GM of our Silicon Valley Search Technology Center, working on MSN Live Search. Sean will report into Harry Shum when he starts work on December 22. We look forward to welcoming Sean Suchter to Microsoft at that time." Microsoft's talent grab from Yahoo is an interesting one, given that Microsoft has also tried to to buy Yahoo's search and search ad business many times, to little success. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently discounted the possibility that Microsoft would rebid for all of Yahoo after it abandoned a takeover attempt earlier this year. Ballmer's most recent statements sent Yahoo's stock further into the basement. Losing important execs like Suchter, who was the VP of Search Technology at Yahoo, will also not help the company's prospects. Suchter was deeply involved in Yahoo's efforts to open up its search platform, initiatives the company has touted aggressively as a bright spot in its not so lustrous landscape. Suchter, who came to Yahoo almost six years ago after it acquired Inktomi (the company that got Yahoo into the search business) in early 2003, has been talking with Microsoft for a while and his leaving was not linked or related to the resignation by Jerry Yang to step down as Yahoo's day to day CEO. -

TechFest 2013 Keynote Rick Rashid March 5, 2013 ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Microsoft Chief Research Officer, Rick Rashid. (Applause.) RICK RASHID: Hi there. Well, hopefully this will be a very fun day for all of you. For me, it's interesting. It feels like we've been doing TechFest for a really, long time, but it's actually only been since 2001. So, technically, I think, this is the 13th TechFest event for Microsoft Research. Of course, in the first TechFest, it wasn't nearly as big an event as this. It was just for employees. We didn't take up nearly as much space. And we didn't even know how many people would really show up. I was actually one of the strongest skeptics about this whole idea of creating this technology show for our employees, because I wasn't really sure how many people would show up. I kept saying, “Well, gosh, it seems like it's going to be a lot of work, and I'm not sure it's going to be really valuable and worthwhile, but if you guys really think you want to do it, okay.” Of course, what happened that year was we had, I think, about 4,000 of our Puget Sound employees come over a two-day period. And of course Microsoft was a much smaller company back then, so that was just a huge fraction of our Puget Sound workforce at that time. And everybody was really excited. I mean, the researchers came away from the event really excited about being able to talk to so many of our employees, be able to interact with them, and to sort of sell their ideas, and show off what they've been doing. -

Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies, 10(3), e202016. https://doi.org/10.29333/ojcmt/7996 ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Received: 7 Feb 2020 This article focuses on the history of Zhongguancun as one of the most important area used by Accepted: 9 Apr 2020 the official Chinese narrative to promote the historical shift from the “made in China” model to the “created in China” one. We reconfigure this process through three historical phases that reflect the engagement of policymakers, business and high-tech agents in the creation of a specific social imaginary. Based on a textual analysis as well as on political and sectorial sources, this historical study argues that Zhongguancun carries a set of cultural values influenced by the Silicon Valley experience, however it still fails to achieve success in terms of creation and innovation. In detail, our article highlights three findings: Zhongguacun satisfied the conditions of creative area only during its first stage, when local industries had to adapt its services and products to the Chinese language and culture. Second, Zhongguancun shared with the Silicon Valley neoliberalists issues such as those related to the risk of a real estate bubble burst. Third, although Chinese documents show that Zhongguancun has not the same creativity outputs compared to the Silcon Valley, it shares with California its financial dynamics mainly driven by huge investments in innovation places like innovation cafes. -

As a result of extensive research, I argue that there have been sustained forces pushing China’s industry to more innovative fields with a stronger orientation to the domestic market. The crisis will only strengthen the shift in a more dramatic manner. This conclusion is based on my research in Beijing’s Zhongguancun, a region dedicated to innovative industry and domestic market. -
