Curating Precarity. Swedish Queer Film Festivals As Micro-Activism
Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis Uppsala Studies in Media and Communication 16 Curating Precarity Swedish Queer Film Festivals as Micro-Activism SIDDHARTH CHADHA Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Lecture Hall 2, Ekonomikum, Kyrkogårdsgatan 10, Uppsala, Thursday, 15 April 2021 at 13:15 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Dr. Marijke de Valck (Department of Media and Culture, Utrecht University). Abstract Chadha, S. 2021. Curating Precarity. Swedish Queer Film Festivals as Micro-Activism. Uppsala Studies in Media and Communication 16. 189 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-513-1145-6. This research is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at Malmö Queer Film Festival and Cinema Queer Film Festival in Stockholm, between 2017-2019. It explores the relevance of queer film festivals in the lives of LGBTQIA+ persons living in Sweden, and reveals that these festivals are not simply cultural events where films about gender and sexuality are screened, but places through which the political lives of LGBTQIA+ persons become intelligible. The queer film festivals perform highly contextualized and diverse sets of practices to shape the LGBTQIA+ discourse in their particular settings. This thesis focuses on salient features of this engagement: how the queer film festivals define and articulate “queer”, their engagement with space to curate “queerness”, the role of failure and contingency in shaping the queer film festivals as sites of democratic contestations, the performance of inclusivity in the queer film festival organization, and the significance of these events in the lives of the people who work or volunteer at these festivals. -
Remedying the Deficiencies of Baseball's Antitrust Exemption In
\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLS\9-1\HLS101.txt unknown Seq: 1 6-FEB-18 14:02 Changing the Game: Remedying the Deficiencies of Baseball’s Antitrust Exemption in the Minor Leagues Theodore McDowell* Abstract: Minor league baseball players are the invisible men of the sport. As labor reform and increased payrolls sweep across the major leagues, minor leaguers have fallen even further behind, casualties of baseball’s broad anti- trust exemption. The results have been troublesome—minor leaguers are forced into exploitative adhesion contracts that offer salaries significantly below the federal poverty line. Pushes for legal and political reform have been largely unsuccessful, stymied by judicial inertia, a disinterested legisla- ture, and collusive collective bargaining. Clearly, the time has come for mi- nor league players to change strategies. Instead of pursuing futile contests against ownership, minor leaguers should recruit major league owners to the reformative cause. By illustrating the competitive advantages major league teams could reap by deploying more capital into minor league salaries and player development, minor leaguers can reshape the current zero-sum game against owners into a new, mutual collaboration that will produce systemic reform. I. Introduction Major League Baseball (“MLB”) is a staple of American history. Base- ball has a colorful lore, which has been romanticized by fans reminiscing * Theodore N. Though trans women of color, such as Laverne Cox and Janet Mock, are more visible in mainstream media than ever before, mainstream media still largely depicts trans people through white constructs of what it means to be trans, namely medicalized binary transitions. -

REBELS on POINTE Featuring LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO
REBELS ON POINTE Featuring LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTE CARLO A film by Bobbi Jo Hart An Icarus Films Release Produced by Adobe Productions International "Laugh out loud funny! Knocks the stuffy art off its pedestal and makes it an open, inclusive, and accessible experience. This spirited doc shows how much better art—and life—can be when everyone is invited to the party." —POV Magazine (718) 488-8900 www.IcarusFilms.com LOGLINE A riotous, irreverent all-male comic ballet troupe, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo challenges gender and artistic norms in the conservative world of ballet. SYNOPSIS Exploring universal themes of identity, dreams and family, Rebels on Pointe celebrates the legendary dance troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. The notorious all- male drag ballet company, commonly known as “The Trocks,” was founded in 1974 in New York City on the heels of the Stonewall riots and has since developed a passionate cult following around the world. The film juxtaposes intimate behind-the-scenes access, rich archives and history, engaging character driven stories, and dance performances shot in North America, Europe and Japan. Rebels on Pointe is a creative blend of gender-bending artistic expression, diversity, passion and purpose which proves that a ballerina can be an act of revolution… in a tutu. Rebels on Pointe introduces dancers that director Bobbi Jo Hart filmed for four years: Bobby Carter from Charleston, South Carolina; Raffaele Morra from Fossano, Italy; Chase Johnsey from Lakeland, Florida; and Carlos Hopuy is from Havana, Cuba. With personal histories impacted by the AIDS crisis and eventual growth of the LGBT civil rights movement, the film’s main characters share powerful and inspiring anecdotes about growing up gay, their relationships with their families, and their challenges in becoming professional ballerinas. -

A Film by Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch Me @The Zoo a Film by Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch
ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO A FILM BY CHRIS MOUKARBEL AND VALERIE VEATCH ME @THE ZOO tells the story of Chris Crocker, a video blogger from a small town in Tennessee. Crocker is part of the first generation of kids raised on the Internet, coming of age under constant self- surveillance. His online videos, including the infamous YouTube declaration “Leave Britney Alone!”– have been viewed hundreds of millions of times and have created a worldwide phenomenon. This portrait weaves a tapestry of Internet media with reactions from Crocker fans and haters to examine a new controversial kind of fame: the Internet folk hero. ACQUIRED BY HBO (USA) AND BBC (UK) DIRECTOR’S WORD Like so many others, we first discovered Chris Crocker by being sent early online videos such as “Bitch Please” and “This or That”. The first question we asked was apparently a common one. “Is this real?” Years later we began making a film that asked the same question in a more general sense. We began a documentary about the history and impact of reality televi- sion. As ideas of consciousness shift in lockstep with new technology, “Reality” has become the dominant medium. Our film research took us around the world. We interviewed everyone from the cast of the original Dutch reality show, Hollywood executives and even a Reality TV School. In the end, this hunt for reality brought us to a small town in Tennessee and to Chris Crocker. Crocker was raised in the age of reality where anyone with a camera can become a star. -

Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 1 Running Head: UNINTENTIONAL DIALOGUES ON YOUTUBE Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube RESEV 554: Semester Project Analysis Memo Laura Bestler Iowa State University December 15, 2008 Unintentional Dialogues on YouTube 2 Introduction The purpose of this video is to illustrate themes within the online user commentary reacting to Chris Crocker’s (2008) YouTube video titled, “Gay HATE on YouTube!” The central question of this study is how users intermittently engage about Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Questioning (LGTBQQ) topics represented on YouTube. The unintentional dialogues between users on YouTube™ are providing additional knowledge to what is happening within today’s society (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). Online social networks are a natural place to employ post modern theory due to its playfulness, reflexivity, and the deconstruction of the cyber world (Noblit, Flores, & Murillo, 2004). The research findings demonstrate a connection between time and negative user reactions towards LGBTQQ topics. Why Online? An evolution of the online world has taken place to provide everyone the ability to create content. Social networks provided a way people to connect with friends, family and online social acquaintances. Similar to the offline world, user created content had begun to utilize hate language and expletives to describe people. These degrading interactions provided a catalyst for me to take action. This online social laboratory can be brought to light, deconstructed and transcended. Therefore, helping people understand their actions are broader than snippet commented online. These unintentional dialogues are broadcast around the world. The internet is an environment where people’s small gestures may become large, and it is a mirror or lens of the world around them (Popkin, 2008). -
