Keith Knapp has offered the use of the pride of his Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle fleet for charity. The unique fundraiser will see the company’s 25m vessel Cru- sader carry passengers on day trips to D’Urville Island from later this month. Knapp came up with the idea as an ideal way to make some money for charity. Passengers will pay $100 each for a six-hour journey, which included a stop at Catherine Cove for a walk and picnic or purchased lunch. ‘‘The boat’s available and Sir Peter Talley has kindly donated the fuel,’’ Knapp said. Knapp has chosen the Rotary Club of Motueka to organise and promote the fundraiser which would see all of all money raised split evenly between the Nelson- Tasman Hospice Trust, the Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital, the Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Heli- copter Trust and Rotary Oceania The Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle will host a charity cruise to D’Urville Island. Community Art Works is enjoying the help of a British- based artist to create a larger- than-life-sized mobile pukeko lan- tern. It was by chance that Lois Conlan ran into Community Art Works in Nelson’s Wakatu Square. ‘‘I was just walking past and I thought it looked really interesting, it was a Sunday morning and everything else was closed in Nelson,’’ she said. Conlan, from Sheffield in Eng- land, is travelling through New Zealand on a working holiday visa. She has made Nelson her home for a couple of weeks while helping the group with a lantern installation for Light Nelson in July. I can learn some skills and take it home with me,’’ she said. Community Art Works helps disabled and mentally ill people to connect with their artistic side. It is run by Faye Wulff and her son Karl. Faye said she was very happy Conlan peeked through the win- dow and that she has been a great help so far. Work on the controversial Stoke Community and Sports Facility at Greenmeadows will start a few weeks out from the local body elections, Nelson City Council staff have revealed. With 17,500 residents including about 4500 retirees, Stoke is seen as a major political battleground for mayoral and council candidates. A call for ideas for the area drew more than 800 submissions, more than for the city’s annual plan. There was considerable public support for a multi-use facility in Stoke and the Greenmeadows cen- tre became a major objective of Mayor Rachel Reese and the cur- rent council, but late questions arose over its siting beside the playing fields. A well-hidden sheep and smart business moves are behind the growing success of a children’s book created by Nelson students. Where’s Woolly?, a Kiwi twist on the popular Where’s Wally? books was launched earlier this year by five Nelson College students as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme. After a prototype print run of 100, with sales mainly at the Nel- son Saturday Market, the group has now sold around 600 books, including to school libraries around the country and to a national book chain. The book hides Woolly in popular New Zealand locations, including the Sky Tower in Auck- land, Kaiteriteri beach, Lake Tekapo, a Waikato paddock and Coronet Peak. The five Nelson students, James Perham, Braydon Drummond, Ben Higgins, Alistair King and Duncan Murray, came up with the text and Garin College Students James student Poppi Burke drew the Perham, left and illustrations. STEPHEN MCCARTHY

The hot fine summers experienced in Nelson make for the increased awareness of skin damage done by strong ultraviolet rays. The message is to cover up, slop on high factor sunblock and keep out of the sun. Many suburban gardens have practically no shade at all and if you wish to keep your children out of the sun this often means keeping them indoors on hot sunny days. The ever-increasing size of family homes coupled with the ever-decreasing size of residential sections precludes the planting of all but the smallest trees. Some specimen trees are not suitable for suburban gardens unless you are prepared to accept their removal when a neighbour complains that they are shading him or her too much. Many suburban battles have been fought over this issue, sometimes involving expensive legal costs. The following two trees are relatively quick growing and do not get too large. On the median strip around Port Nelson is a fine planting of purple-blue jacarandas mixed with the pale pink Cape chestnut (Calodendrum capense). This planting probably dates from the 1970s when the Port road was upgraded and widened and every summer around mid-January they put on a fine display. Former Silver Fern Irene van Dyk spent the day visiting the three winning schools who took part in the Bring Irene to Nelson competition, organised by Tall Poppy Real Estate. Entrants were asked to post a photo of themselves or their team to the company’s Facebook page, with online votes then deciding the final outcome. As well overall winners Nayland College, van Dyk also took the time to engage with pupils at Clifton Terrace and Wakefield Schools who had finished second and third respectively. Before an entire school Another mass start heralds the end of this year’s Nelson assembly at Clifton Terrace, van Dyk spoke Schools Cross Country League. Schools cross country series finale

The final race of the Schools League Cross Country series took place in torrential rain on Saturday. The course was set out around Miyazu Gardens to incorporate every large puddle of water avail- able – some getting to knee deep for the smallest runners. It was a contrast to the hilly, narrow and twisty course the previous week at Rabbit Island. But even with the horrendous conditions on Saturday over 200 children turned up. The primary girls went first leaving the boys shivering on the sideline. Florence McNabb had convincingly won the previous two races, but Iris Meffan, winner of the initial race at Saxton, once again came in first. The mostly flat courses seem to suit the speedy year 6 runner. Lola King, not far behind, came in third. The Primary Girls Cup went to Henley School who with a depth of runners, soundly beat Central and Hampden Street Schools. The competition for the Primary Boys Cup was a lot closer. Fenlon Bayley of Hampden Street has been unbeaten in the region for the last two years and he was a comfortable winner again on Saturday. Tom Hoare of Clifton Terrace, usually a reliable second, strained a muscle as he came through the last 400m. He was passed first by his teammate Adam Barton who finished second then by Niko Bruce who came third. Things were looking desperate for Clifton Ter- race but Tom at the urging of the crowd just managed to hold off the fast sprinting Luke Kilworth of Hampden Street to ensure that Clifton Terrace won the Primary Boys Cup. “I KNOW MUM’S SAFE, The Intermediate Cups were a little more predi- cable with Nelson Girls Prep and Waimea win- ning the respective girls’ and boys’ trophies. COSY AND CONTENT.” Alex Honey and Jacob Neal have led the last two races with Honey winning both. However on Saturday, Neal finished first. Ben Polak, always in the top three, again made third. Lucy Martin has also maintained her form throughout the series and recorded another win. See Dorrie’s story at summerset.co.nz
