  • 01720Joya Chatterji the Spoil
This page intentionally left blank The Spoils of Partition The partition of India in 1947 was a seminal event of the twentieth century. Much has been written about the Punjab and the creation of West Pakistan; by contrast, little is known about the partition of Bengal. This remarkable book by an acknowledged expert on the subject assesses partition’s huge social, economic and political consequences. Using previously unexplored sources, the book shows how and why the borders were redrawn, as well as how the creation of new nation states led to unprecedented upheavals, massive shifts in population and wholly unexpected transformations of the political landscape in both Bengal and India. The book also reveals how the spoils of partition, which the Congress in Bengal had expected from the new boundaries, were squan- dered over the twenty years which followed. This is an original and challenging work with findings that change our understanding of parti- tion and its consequences for the history of the sub-continent. JOYA CHATTERJI, until recently Reader in International History at the London School of Economics, is Lecturer in the History of Modern South Asia at Cambridge, Fellow of Trinity College, and Visiting Fellow at the LSE. • Geochemistry of Mn and Its Spatial Distribution in the Murshidabad District of West Bengal, India
Goldschmidt2015 Abstracts Geochemistry of Mn and its spatial distribution in the Murshidabad District of West Bengal, India M. VEGA1, S. DATTA1, H. KULKARNI2, P. KEMPTON1, P. BHATTACHARYA3, N. MLADENOV2 AND K. JOHANNESSON4 1Department of Geology, Kansas State University 2Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, SDSU 3KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden 4Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, Tulane University Elevated concentrations of manganese (Mn) have been observed in the groundwaters of West Bengal, India. As a neurotoxin Mn is known to cause a variety of adverse health effects, ranging from neuromuscular problems to the inhibition of neurological devlopment, particularly in children. The realization of this additional contaminant in the arsenic afflicted regions of southeast Asia poses serious implications with regards to human health. Hence, the current study aims to address three objectives pertaining to the geochemistry of Mn in Murshidabad: i) the extent, occurrence, and overall distribution of groundwater Mn; ii) characterization of the DOM within the groundwater and the resultant effects that are imposed on dissolved Mn; and iii) the relationship between Mn, As, and various inorganic constituents and their impact on the subsequent release and accumulation of Mn. A total of 34 water samples were collected (29 tubewells, 4 pond, 1 river) from six villages in Murshidabad. Three of these villages (Hariharpara, Beldanga, Naoda) contain reducing groundwaters (Mean Mn: 0.931±0.420mg/L), while the remaining three (Nabagram, Kandi, Khidirpore) contain oxidizing groundwaters (Mean Mn: 0.739±0.333mg/L). Eighty-three percent (n=29) of the wells surveyed contain Mn levels that exceed the recommended WHO limit of 0.4 mg/L, with Mn persisting in circumneutral pH environments and under a broad range of ORP’s (-108<mV<156).

  • Murshidabad District During the Covid-19 Lockdown
Support to the members of the fishing community in Murshidabad district during the Covid-19 lockdown In terms of fish culture and fishers in West Bengal, the Murshidabad district has always held a special place. The total number of fisher people of the district is 353,174 and most of them belong to the socially and economically backward scheduled caste (SC) category. This district has the highest number of fisher folks in the SC category in West Bengal. DISHA, in collaboration with Dakshinbanga Matsyajibi Forum (DMF), is trying to support the fishing community in this district to get organised and establish their rights as a community. After the outbreak of COVID-19, their livelihood suffered badly because of the long lockdown. Initially, fishing activities were not allowed. Even when these were allowed with restrictions, markets were dull. Whatever little savings the fishers and fish vendors had were spent. DISHA and Dakshinbanga Matsyajibi Forum tried to reach them and provided support to 1047 families up to the end of June 2020. 163 families in Hariharpara block (Malopara, Fataipur & Ramkrishnapur) 186 families in Murshidabad-Jiaganj (MJ) block (Prasadpur, Tentuliya & Nawda) 211 families in Nabagram block (Dafarpur & Nabagram) 142 families in Jalangi block (Kajipara & Singhpara colony) 63 families in Raninagar-II block (Katlamari Guripara & Katlamari Halderpara) 213 families in Berhampore block (Kumradaha Ghat, Gandhi Colony) 69 families in Bhagwangola II block ( Ranitala) 1 Hariharpara Block Hariharpara is a census town and block in Murshidabad district. The total area of Hariharpara is 253.14 sq km. Hariharpara CD Block is bounded by Raninagar I CD Block in the north, Berhampore CD block in North-West, Domkal CD Block in the east, Naoda CD Block in the south and Beldanga I CD Blocks in the west.
