Biografieën ................................................................................................................... 252 5 Voorwoord Dit werk wil een brug slaan tussen de doorsnee natuurminnaar die graag in de natuur naar planten en dieren kijkt en de beginnende onderzoeker die wel wat meer wil weten over wat hij feitelijk ziet. Het gaat hier over water- en oppervlaktewantsen, een relatief kleine groep van aan water gebonden insecten, die je kunt vinden in zowat alle met water verbonden habitats*. Veel soorten zijn kenmerkend voor typische biotopen en hun aanwezigheid zegt dan veel over de plaats waar je ze hebt aangetroffen. We hopen in de eerste plaats interesse op te wekken om zelf uit te zoeken welke soorten water- en oppervlaktewantsen in je buurt voorkomen. In ieders omgeving liggen wel plassen, vijvers, vennen, sloten, grachten, beken of rivieren, al dan niet gelegen in natuurgebieden, die wachten om geïnventariseerd te worden. Tegelijk hopen we dat het boek ook meer ervaren onderzoekers kan aanspreken door gegevens aan te brengen die nooit bekend waren of werden gepubliceerd. Met dit doel voor ogen is extra ruime aandacht besteed aan illustraties. Met de moderne fotografie is het nu mogelijk geworden om soorten bijna volledig met foto’s te illustreren. Die benaderen immers meer de werkelijkheid zoals je die zelf kunt waarnemen. De identificatiesleutels zijn beknopt gehouden en betreffen alleen volwassen exemplaren. Meer uitgebreide beschrijvingen, ecologische- en verspreidingsgevens zijn opgenomen in de soortenbesprekingen. Hierbij is ernaar gestreefd om de vaak moeilijke, wetenschappelijke termen te vertalen of te combineren met Nederlandse begrippen. Bovendien zijn woorden gemerkt met een * uitgelegd in een verklarende woordenlijst achter in het boek. Descriptions are provided for all of the taxa, and features of developmental morphology are described, compared, and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Four species are described as new: T. hebri (on Hebridae), T. hydrometrae (on Hydrometridae), and T. bi/ormis and T. bullatus (on MesoveJiidae). The species growing on Hebridae and Hydrometridae are monoecious. The two species on Mesoveliidae develop monoecious and dioecious morphs, which occur together on the same host individual. This phenom­ enon is recognized and described for the first time in the Laboulbeniales. Two species, Autophagomyces poissonii and Dioicomyces mesoveliae, previously described from a species ofMesoveliidae, are shown to represent the monoecious and dioecious forms of a species of Triceromyces and are transferred to this genus as T.

The type of male meiosis is a stable character at the family level in the order Heteroptera and provides additional information on the relationships between taxa. The most common pattern, probably ancestral in the order is chiasmate mei- osis; however achiasmate meiosis has been described in fi ve families of terrestrial Heteroptera, all belonging to the infraorder Cimicomorpha (Anthocoridae, Micro- physidae, Cimicidae, Miridae, Nabidae). Among water bugs, achiasmate meiosis is reported in the families Saldidae (Leptopodomorpha) and Мicronectidae (Nepomor- pha). Regarding the third infraorder of water bugs, Gerromorpha, data on meiotic patterns are absent, except for the Limnogonus aduncus Drake, Harris, 1933 (Ger- ridae) possessing chiasmate meiosis. In this paper, the male meiotic pattern of six water bugs species from infraorders Nepomorpha (Plea minutissima minnutissima Leach, 1817) and Gerromorpha (Mesovelia furcata Mulsant, Ray, 1852, Microv- elia reticulata (Burmeister, 1835), Gerris costae fi eberi Stichel, 1938, Hydrometra gracilenta Horváth, 1899, Velia pelagonensis Hoberlandt, 1941) is studied, and the karyotypes of the last two species are described for the fi rst time. In the species exam- ined, bivalents are chiasmate, so all these species possess chiasmate meiosis in males.
