Drucken Herman Brood Wer ist und war Herman Brood? - Ganz einfach! Herman war Niederländer. Er wurde bekannt durch seine Musik und Liebe zum Rock`n Roll. Er überzeugte seine Fangemeinde durch bodenständigen Rock. Mit "Saturday Night" und seiner Band "The Wild Romance" gelang ihm vor vielen Jahren ein Welthit. Jedes Jahr zur Weihnachtszeit gastierte er zum Beispiel im Kölner "Luxor". Dort zeigte er schon fast legendäre Konzerte, bei denen er sich meist völlig verausgabte. Herman war ein vielseitiger Maler, Künstler, Bodypainter. Seine Werke hängen in Galerien und Museen. Jetzt ist Herman tot. Er stürzte sich von einem Hochhaus in Amsterdam. Seine Bilder und seine Musik werden weiterleben. "Herman Brood wurde am 5. November 1946 im niederländischen Zwolle geboren. Im Alter von 12 Jahren begann er zu zeichnen und erlernte das Klavierspiel. Mit 17 Jahren zog er nach Arnheim, um dort an der Akademie für bildende Künste zu studieren. Dort schließt er sich der Band “The Moans” an, aus denen später “Long Tall Ernie & The Shakers” werden sollten. 1967 steigt er bei der Drenter Band “Cuby & The Blizzards” ein. Diese Bluesband um Eelco Gelling und Harry Muskee wurde ab 1966 enorm erfolgreich, nicht nur in den Beneluxländern, sondern ab den späten Sechzigern auch bei uns. Doch nach zwei Alben mit Cuby wird Brood wegen Drogenkonsums und Handel mit LSD verhaftet und kommt ins Gefängnis. Philips trennt sich daraufhin von ihm und die Band muss sich nach einem neuen Klavierspieler umsehen. Brood verlässt nach dem Gefängnisaufenthalt die Niederlande und hält sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs in Griechenland und Israel über Wasser. Völlig mittellos kehrt er drei Jahre später nach Holland zurück. Er lebt von kleinen Dealereien und Einbrüchen, daneben gibt er in drittklassigen Pornoproduktionen den Hengst. Schließlich geben Cuby & The Blizzards 1974 ihr Abschiedskonzert, das auch für eine Plattenproduktion aufgezeichnet wird. Wieder mit dabei: Herman Brood, der zu dieser Zeit von Kneipenjobs lebt. Aber dieser Auftritt beschert ihm neuen Kontakt zur Musikszene und er kommt bei der kurzlebigen Band “Stud” unter. 1975 gründet er mit Hans Lafaille “The Flash & Dance Band”. Schließlich, noch im selben Jahr, entwickelt er mit Herman van Boeyen, und Peter Smid ein neues Projekt: “Vitesse”. Sie verkaufen die Studiobänder an die WEA und Brood gründet eine Backingband für Soloauftritte: “The Wild Romance”. Sie veröffentlichen ihr erstes Album “Street”. Der Rest ist Geschichte. Insgesamt dürfte Brood mit und ohne Wild Romance so um die 15 Alben veröffentlicht haben, seit den achtziger Jahren ist er in Holland und Belgien auch als Maler sehr gefragt, seine Bilder hängen dort in Museen und Galerien. Doch über all die Jahre haben Drogen und Alkohol die Hauptrolle in Broods Leben gespielt. Täglich zwei Gramm Heroin und ungezählte Gläser. Und wir haben immer gedacht: Der Mann ist ein Phänomen. Den haut nichts um. Der sieht trotz seiner täglichen Exzesse gesünder aus als wir alle. Broodje gezond sozusagen. Aber Herman war nicht mehr Broodje gezond. Broodje halfom vielleicht noch, vielleicht. Er machte gerade in den letzten Jahren trotzdem noch spannende Platten. 1999 das reine Jazzalbum “Back on the Corner” und schließlich Ende 2000 dann sein letztes Werk “Ciao Monkey”. Wie ein Abgesang auf sich, er wusste, er hatte nicht mehr lange. Trotzdem sang er trotzig: “Speed keeps me young” aber auch “I hate myself”, “Take me off the cross” und schließlich “When I get home”. Das war vor einem halben Jahr. Wir hätten die Zeichen erkennen können. Was wir nicht wussten, wissen wir jetzt: Seinen Biografen Bart Chabot hatte er noch vor ein paar Monaten gefragt, von welchem Gebäude er springen sollte. Vom Hilton Hotel oder vom Okurahotel. Chabot hatte ihm zum Hilton geraten, weil das nur einen Steinwurf von seiner Wohnung entfernt läge. Da musste Brood noch einmal herzlich lachen. Dabei hatte er schon nichts mehr zu lachen. Ja, er hatte sein Überlebensmittel, den Humor, verloren. Sein Arzt hatte ihm vor Monaten noch ein halbes Jahr gegeben, wenn er nicht augenblicklich Alkohol und Heroin aufgäbe. Brood war vom Tod gezeichnet. Seine Nieren spielten nicht mehr mit, seine Leber versagte, er hatte unerträgliche Schmerzen, er war mittlerweile inkontinent. Er sagte Auftritte ab, weil er nicht mehr für lange Auftritte auf Bühnen stehen konnte. Es war unsäglich. Am meisten muss ihn aber geschmerzt haben, dass er nicht mehr richtig malen konnte in den letzten Monaten. Aus dem begabten Künstler war ein Dilletant geworden. Man sah ihn in der Amsterdamer Kalverstraat. Er malte Bilder im Schnellverfahren für Passanten und für ein paar Gulden. Der stolze unzerstörbare Herman war am Ende. Doch am 7. Juli 2001 hatte er noch einen Termin bei Madame Tussaud. Er wurde dort in Wachs verewigt. Diesen Termin nahm er wahr, doch er erschien mit kahlgeschorenem Kopf. Sein Markenzeichen, seine schwarze Haarpracht, sie war verschwunden. 11. Juli 2001 um 13:30 Uhr. Herman Brood ist tot. Vom Dach des Hilton Hotels gesprungen mit einem Abschiedsbrief in der Tasche: “Ich sehe keinen Sinn mehr. Macht ein schönes Fest. Und vielleicht sehe ich euch wieder." Zwei Tage später liegt die Leiche aufgebahrt im Amsterdamer Paradiso. Die Polizei muss einschreiten, so viele Menschen wollen Abschied nehmen von Hollands Rock n Roll Superstar. Am 15. Juli gaben ihm dann Hollands Topmusiker im Paradiso ein Abschiedskonzert, während Hermans Sarg an der Stelle aufgebahrt war, an der sonst bei Paradiso-Auftritten sein Piano stand. Der Heart and Soul Rock n Roll Junkie ist tot. Aber er lebt in unseren Herzen weiter. Kom van dat dak af, Herman!" As a musician he achieved artistic and commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s, and was called "the greatest and only Dutch rock 'n' roll star". Later in life he started a successful career as a painter. Known for his hedonistic lifestyle of "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll", Brood was an enfant terrible and a cultural figure whose suicide by jumping from a hotel roof, apparently influenced by a failure to kick his drug and alcohol habit,[2] strengthened his controversial status; according to a poll organised to celebrate fifty years of Dutch popular music, it was the most significant event in its history. Musical career Herman Brood was born in Zwolle, and started playing the piano at age 12. He founded beat band The Moans in 1964, which would later become Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers. Brood was asked to play with Cuby and the Blizzards, but was removed by management when the record company discovered he used drugs. For a number of years Brood was in jail (for dealing LSD), or abroad, and had a number of short-term engagements (with The Studs, the Flash & Dance Band, Vitesse).[4] In 1976, Brood started his own group, Herman Brood & His Wild Romance, (and started work with photographer Anton Corbijn) initially with Ferdi Karmelk (guitar), Gerrit Veen (bass), Peter Walrecht (drums), and Ellen Piebes and Ria Ruiters (vocals). They played the club and bar circuit, first in Groningen (the northeasternmost province of the Netherlands.) In 1977 the band released their first album, Street.
