A Note from the Director

Jesus Superstar is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Musical Numbers For some, it’s merely an enjoyable rock opera. For others, it’s blasphemous. For still others, it’s the story of their faith in a rollicking rock and roll package. Act I For those of us involved in this production, Superstar has become a means of Shema/Overture - Jesus, Orchestra spreading a message of hope and undying love. "Heaven on Their Minds" - Judas We’re bringing this show to you following a series of “trials and tribulations” of "What's the Buzz/Strange Thing, Mystifying" - Jesus, , Judas, our own. From mere inconveniences to genuine heartbreaks, this show has Disciples been a true labor of love. so very proud of how our cast and crew stuck it “Then We Are Decided”- Caiaphas, Annas out and made this show into something spectacular. Thank you to each and "Everything's Alright" - Mary Magdalene, Judas, Jesus, Disciples every one of you. "This Jesus Must Die" - Caiaphas, Annas, Priests, Disciples "Hosanna" - Caiaphas, Jesus, Disciples I wish each of you sitting in the audience could have been here as we planned "Simon Zealotes/Poor Jerusalem" - Simon, Jesus, Disciples this show. The dedication to quality, truth, and faith was amazing. That’s why "Pilate's Dream" - Claudia you’ll notice a few different things about our version of Superstar . "The Temple" - Jesus, Merchants, Mob "Everything's Alright" (reprise) - Mary Magdalene, Jesus Whatever your beliefs about Jesus of Nazareth, there are a few facts that even "I Don't Know How to Love Him" - Mary Magdalene the most skeptical accept: he was Jewish, born at a time and in a place when "Damned for All Time/Blood Money" - Judas, Caiaphas, Annas, Chorus that fact alone put him in a precarious position, and he stood up for those on the margins of society: women, the disabled, the poor. Regrettably, Jesus’ Jewish identity gets lost in most productions with only Caiaphas and Annas being repeatedly tied to their religion. We hope the additions of the Shema and Kaddish, recited by Jesus and his followers, help remedy this. You’ll also see a

greater emphasis on the role of women in Jesus’ life. It’s our hope that these Act II modifications remind everyone that God has a place for you, regardless of "The Last Supper" - Jesus, Judas, Apostles gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc., in His work.

"Gethsemane" - Jesus There’s also another thing that both skeptics and believers agree on: Jesus was "The Arrest" - Jesus, Peter, Apostles, Caiaphas, Annas, Crowd, Roman Guards human. Whether you also believe he was God or not, we hope Joshua’s "Peter's Denial" - Peter, Mary Magdalene, Crowd portrayal brings you comfort. Jesus knew pain, doubt, joy, laughter, tears, "Pilate and Christ" - Pilate, Jesus, Roman Guard, Crowd anxiety, exhaustion, fear, hope, faith, friendship, and, above all, love. So you’re "King Herod's Song" - Herod, Crowd not alone in any of that. You’re never alone. "Could We Start Again, Please?" - Mary Magdalene, Peter, Disciples "Judas' Death" - Judas, Caiaphas, Annas, Chorus Nearly 2,000 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth was executed on a Roman cross. "Trial By Pilate" - Pilate, Caiaphas, Annas, Jesus, Crowd Whether or not you believe he rose from the dead, this much is true: there lived "Superstar" - Judas, Dancers, Chorus a man who loved you so much that he was willing to die for you. If you leave "Crucifixion" - Jesus this theatre with nothing else, we hope it’s that: *you* are loved. ":41" - Orchestra Kaddish- Peter, Mary of Nazareth God bless, Finale - Mary Magdalene Andrew Darcy
