PROBLEM STATEMENT Visuals 18 I’ll be designing a poster that advertises a musical artist’s tour. I will be using type only to communicate lyrics of a particular song to use as my PROBLEM STATEMENT visuals. The song I chose to promote is AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. PRACTICALITIES It must be reasonable to reproduce, at a size of at least 187 square inches, and at least two colors. It should be noticeable from a great distance. It will be used on walls, in public transportation, and record stores in large cities. It should appeal to the audience we’re trying to attract to these shows. AUDIENCE Mostly male, ages 15-25 People who are nostalgic for 70s/80s metal, older generation Random popular music listeners that could afford an arena rock show VISUALS Music was very over-the-top in this era, this poster can not be subtle. AC/DC uses a lot of black, purple lightning, and smoke. Angus Young is the mascot of the band in a school boy’s uniform. ADJECTIVES Energized Raw Intense MACROELEMENTS Chopped up like type has been struck by lightning and cut into shards Bloody, thick, textured paint to represent vitality and intensity Electrical current illuminating type, energy of song and literally of lyrics 20 LYRICS RESEARCH I was caught You’ve been - thunderstruck, In the middle of a railroad track thunderstruck (Thunder) Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck And I knew there was no turning Oh, thunderstruck back (Thunder) Yeah My mind raced And I thought what could I do Now we’re shaking at the knees (Thunder) Could I come again please? And I knew There was no help, no help from Thunderstruck, thunderstruck you (Thunder) Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah Sound of the drums Beatin’ in my heart Said yeah, it’s alright The thunder of guns We’re doing fine Tore me apart Yeah, it’s alright You’ve been - thunderstruck We’re doing fine So fine Went down the highway Broke the limit, we hit the town Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah, Went through to Texas, yeah Texas Tunderstruck, thunderstruck, And we had some fun thunderstruck We met some girls Whoa baby, baby, thunderstruck Some dancers who gave a good You’ve been thunderstruck, time thunderstruck Broke all the rules, played all the Thunderstruck, thunderstruck fools You’ve been thunderstruck Yeah, yeah, they, they, they blew our minds I was shakin’ at the knees Could I come again please? Yeah the ladies were too kind BIOGRAPHY AC/DC is an Australian hard rock band. The group was formed in Sydney, Australia in November, 1973 by rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young and his brother, lead guitarist Angus Young. Their albums have sold in colossal numbers, the total now being estimated at well in excess of 150 million copies worldwide, with the 1980 album Back in Black selling over 21 million in the US alone and 42 worldwide, making it the second best selling album in the world[1]. The band has had two distinctive lead singers, and its fans tend to divide its history into the “Bon Scott era (1974-80)”, when they were fronted by the legendary Bon Scott and the “Brian Johnson era (1980-present)”. Although the group is generally considered to be a pioneer of hard rock and heavy metal music (they are ranked number 4 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”), the members have always referred to their music as rock ‘n’ roll. Their music is rhythm & blues-based with a higher level of distortion in the lead and rhythm guitars. Overall, AC/ DC is the most successful and well-known band to hail from Australia, ahead of other notables such as INXS. AC/DC is currently rumoured to be working on a new studio album, but as of March 2006, no formal plans to release it have been made. In a 2005 interview with Brian Johnson, he has confirmed that the band does not know where the album will be recorded and finished. Also during the year, it was announced that the album might be a double. 22 CONCEPTS 24 CONCEPTS 2007 SEPTEMBER 1–2 LOS ANGELES, CA OCTOBER 27–28 MIAMI, FL SEPTEMBER 8–9 SACRAMENTO, CA NOVEMBER 3–4 NASHVILLE, TN SEPTEMBER 15–16 SEATTLE, WA NOVEMBER 10–11 CHICAGO, IL SEPTEMBER 22–23 SALT LAKE CITY, UT NOVEMBER 17–18 CLEVELAND, OH SEPTEMBER 29–30 LAS VEGAS, NV NOVEMBER 24–25 PHILADELPHIA, PA OCTOBER 6–7 PHOENIX, AZ DECEMBER 1–2 BOSTON, MS OCTOBER 13–14 DALLAS, TX DECEMBER 8–9 NEW YORK, NY OCTOBER 20–21 BATON ROUGE, LA MY MIND RACED AND I THOUGHT WHAT COULD I DO AND I KNEW THERE WAS NO HELP NO HELP FROM YOU U.S. TOUR September 1–2 Los Angeles, California September 8–9 November 17–18 Sacramento, California Cleveland, Ohio September 15–16 November 24–25 Seattle, Washington Philadelphia, Pennsylvania September 22–23 December 1–2 Salt Lake City, Utah Boston, Massachusetts September 29–30 December 8–9 the Las Vegas, Nevada New York, New York October 6–7 Phoenix, Arizona american tour October 13–14 Dallas, Texas October 20–21 Baton Rouge, Louisiana October 27–28 Miami, Florida November 3–4 Nashville, Tennessee November 10–11 Chicago, Illinois • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 26 REFINEMENTS .

  • Tax and AC/DC
Tax and AC/DC Kim G C Moody FCPA, FCA, TEP September 21, 2015 Those of you who know me well will know that my first career choice was to be a music teacher. I studied and played music classically well into my teens. When I realized that my talents would likely not provide me a stable living, I switched gears and became a Chartered Accountant. I still love music – all types of music with a few exceptions – but I have a soft spot for classic rock which is often playing in my office. One of my all time favorite bands is AC/DC. Their straight-ahead blues rock with very simple (almost comical) lyrics is exactly what I like to listen to when I need to turn my brain off (which doesn’t happen very often). Accordingly, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend AC/DC’s concert in Edmonton on September 20, 2015. It was a cold and wet night, but that didn’t dampen the spirit of the crowd. Classic rock concerts and tax go together like wine and cheese. The last time that AC/DC was on tour in Canada was 2009 and I attended their concert in Vancouver. I wrote a blog about tax and AC/DC back then and I’m continuing that tradition here. So what was I thinking about while listening? Well, here was their set list and each song inspired a different thought about tax: 1. Rock or Bust – This is AC/DC’s lead single from their latest album.

ON THE EFFICIENCY OF AC/DC: BON SCOTT VERSUS BRIAN JOHNSON ROBERT J. OXOBY* We use tools from experimental economics to address the age-old debate regarding who was a better singer in the band AC/DC. Our results suggest that (using wealth maximization as a measure of ‘‘better’’) listening to Brian Johnson (relative to listening to Bon Scott) resulted in ‘‘better’’ outcomes in an ultimatum game. These results may have important implications for settling drunken music debates and environmental design issues in organizations. (JEL C7, C9, D6, Z1) I. INTRODUCTION there exists a common debate. a Reviews & Short Pieces: Australiana 501 wonderful use of sound, “Broadway Vision,” “The Pretty Young Wife,” and the elegies “In Memory, Vincent Buckley 1925–1988” and “For Jim 1947– 1986.” Zwicky’s powers lift poetry out of death with sensitivity and majesty: Darkness. The brief and infinitely graceful dance of body, fluid arc of upraised arms, the dance in air, in empty spaces, the rush to bite down, all, all in beauty. Remember, he said. Remember. Black child, I will. I do. Back in Black290 FEEL THAT BACK IN BLACK has the best opening of any rock album. The I tolling bell, the sense of mourning mixed with threat, the slow guitar picking out an ominous death march with the heartbeat drum behind it that builds to an address by what may be the Devil declaring that he’s coming to take you, the listener, to Hell. It’s “Hell’s Bells” we hear. It’s both a warning and an invitation. And those factors were always at the core of AC/DC. The first time I heard Back in Black was memorable. Picture coastal rural Western Australia, hundreds of miles from the major centre of population (Perth), and four or five panel vans with their backs open, so-called chicks in skin-tight jeans posing to their advantage and their ‘Rock’ boyfriends (‘Rocks’ were a ‘working-class’ gang of the time) in black tee-shirts, black jeans, and ripple-soled desert boots (or ‘DBs’), swigging from ‘long-neck’ beer and Jack Daniels bottles, rocking out to the new AC/DC album beside the Chapman River.

  • Let There Be Rock: the AC/DC Phenomenon
Proceedings of the 24th Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2019) Pokolbin, New South Wales, Australia, 1-3 April 2019 Let There Be Rock: The AC/DC Phenomenon Volker Janssen APAS Publications Officer [email protected] ABSTRACT In a successful career spanning more than 45 years, AC/DC have persistently ignored trends in popular music and resolutely stuck to their bluesy, stripped-to-the-bone brand of high- voltage rock ’n’ roll. This paper investigates the AC/DC phenomenon by examining song lyrics and connotations, the band’s work rate, and the vocalist debate (Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson). Furthermore, a group of 82 hardcore fans is examined to get a better understanding of their passion for the band, and it is outlined how the AC/DC brand is increasingly being marketed to a larger consumer base not limited to music lovers. It was found that the word ‘rock’ is by far the most prominent in AC/DC song titles but lyrically almost half of all AC/DC songs revolve around sex. While the frequency of album releases slowed considerably over time, the band generally played 150 live gigs following each studio album. Bon Scott material continues to account for at least 45% of the songs included in typical AC/DC live sets. Analysis of a questionnaire revealed how committed the cohort of hardcore fans is. They generally became serious fans in their early teens, prefer the older material, experienced their first gig during early adulthood and enjoyed up to 124 gigs since. This paper also demonstrates how one can collect, analyse, interpret and present data.
