How to Make Time Fly While Truck Driving HOW TO MAKE TIME FLY WHILE TRUCK DRIVING TOP PODCASTS ORGANIZED BY GENRE If you’re a truck driver, you know that keeping your focus when you’re on the road can be challenging. You’ve undoubtedly done some long hauls in your day, and you’ve had to figure out creative ways to pass the time. It can be a difficult, lonely job, but you’re up to the task. Today, we’re here to make your job a little easier, and a little less lonely… with Podcasts! WHAT ARE PODCASTS? Think of Podcasts as the Netflix of radio or the modern equivalent of audiobooks. Netflix offers an enormous amount of TV programming and movies at the click of a button, but the platform is not accessible through standard cable television programming. Nor is it the best option for pro- fessional drivers! Podcasts work almost the exact same way, but with one big difference: they are usually FREE and are perfect for life on the road! Podcasts are audio experiences that will transport you to another world, and keep your head in the game while you’re on the road. And just like Netflix, there’s a podcast for every personality type and interest. HOW DO THEY WORK? The biggest thing holding most people back from the pod-sphere is a lack of tech savvy. There is a glaring lack of knowledge about where to find podcasts, and how to listen to them. Just to cover all our bases, let’s talk about this before we move on…. Podcasts might sound like a radio program, but you can’t ‘tune into’ a podcast using your radio dial. You have to download them. Once your podcasts have been downloaded to your device, you can listen to them without the use of data or internet. When we say device, we mean any portable media player. Your computer works, but if you’re on the road, your smartphone might be the easiest option. WHERE TO FIND PODCASTS: 1. Apple Store Apple phones come with a podcast app pre-installed. From there, you have a massive library of podcasts at your fingertips. When you find one that you like, press “subscribe,” and start listening! 2. Spotify Spotify is usually only thought of in terms of music, but they also have a massive library of pod- cast and spoken-word recordings. This is another great podcast platform. 3. Direct From Website Every podcast has a website where you can subscribe, and download their content. If you don’t have access to either of the first two platforms, this is a good fail-safe. We’ll provide links to the website of every podcast we’re about to share with you. What We’ll Cover Today… Today, we’re going to get you started in the world of podcasts. We promise that, with the right podcast, you’ll fall in love with the platform, and that the long hours you spend at the wheel won’t feel quite as long. However, everybody has different interests, so we’ve done our best to be as comprehensive as possible. Today we’ll walk through eight different podcast genres. No matter who you are or where your interests lie, there is bound to be SOMETHING on this list that you’ll enjoy… Table of Contents Genre 1…………………………….History & Politics Genre 2…………………………….Pop Culture & Entertainment Genre 3…………………………….Sports Genre 4…………………………….Science & Non-fiction Genre 5…………………………….Romance & Dating Genre 6…………………………….Spirituality & Wellness Genre 7…………………………….Human Interest Genre 8…………………………….Mystery, Crime & Horror Genre 9…………………………….Trucking Podcasts GENRE ONE HISTORY & POLITICS 1. Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell You may know Malcolm Gladwell from his best-selling books, Outliers, The Tipping Point, or Blink, but Gladwell’s work transcends mediums. His latest project is his new podcast, Revisionist History, which just finished its first season. In this podcast, Gladwell explores little-known histori- cal events with far-reaching and surprising implications for our world today. 2. Serial Surely you’ve heard of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. He was the guy that deserted his post in Afghan- istan only to be captured by the Taliban and held captive for upwards of 5 years. An epic manhunt ensued, but at the end of that hunt, the world was left with more questions than answers. Serial is a radical investigative series exploring the ethical issues underlying this debacle, and breaking down boundaries in search of the truth. You’ll be riveted. 3. The United States of Anxiety The political sphere of the United States is a stressful place. Needless to say, the 2016 election only made things worse. America is more polarized than ever, and this has done a lot to sow the seeds of fear in the American public. Anxiety is widespread, but the folks at the United States of Anxiety have the antidote: information. This podcast will help you remain informed, empathetic, and relaxed(ish). 4. Radiolab Presents: More Perfect Radiolab is a favorite for many podcast listeners (we’ll get their flagship program later in our eBook), and More Perfect is their newest offshoot. This podcast is hosted by Radiolab‘s audio genius, Jad Abumrad, and it focuses on the history of the Supreme Court. In each episode, you’ll learn how Supreme Court justices affect your life on a day-to-day basis. In other contexts, the legal world can be dry and complicated, but Abumrad will have you on the edge of your seat! GENRE TWO POP CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT 1. WTF with Marc Maron WTF might not seem like the most respectable name for a podcast, but don’t let that fool you. WTF has consistently been the top podcast in the WORLD, and Maron has interviewed EVERY- BODY. Including Barack Obama. This is all the more impressive considering the fact that he runs this podcast out of his garage in LA. Maron is a veteran of the comedy world, and has a talent for engaging his interviewees in honest, compelling dialogue. You’ll learn a lot about your heroes listening to their conversations on WTF. 2. You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes Similar to Marc Maron, Pete Holmes is a comedian whose podcast consists of interviewing ce- lebrities. However, that is where the similarities end. You Made It Weird deviates from the normal interview format with its subject matter. Holmes makes a point to talk to his guests about difficult topics like religion, feminism, race, and what happens when we die. It’s a great listen. 3. Monday Morning Podcast with Bill Burr You may or may not be familiar with Boston’s most prickly stand-up comic, Mr. Bill Burr. Regard- less, you’ll get to know him pretty quickly listening to his Monday Morning Podcast. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Burr has forgone the task of interviewing other celebrities, and instead unleashes long, irreverent rants into world twice per week. He’s hilarious, and his thick Boston accent doesn’t hurt either. 4. Rolling Stone Music Now Music nerds, this one is for you! Rolling Stone has been the supportive uncle of music and popu- lar culture since its inception in the 1960s. Since then, they have debuted, featured, interviewed, and promoted everybody from Bob Dylan to Kanye West. Recent interviews on this podcast include Bruce Springsteen and Lars Ulrich (from Metallica). And in addition to some quality time with the classic, you’ll get plenty of recommendations for new music as well! GENRE THREE SPORTS 1. Move The Sticks [Football] Football fans, this one is for you! Move The Sticks is the brainchild of Daniel Jeremiah, who has been one of NFL Network’s biggest stars in the past. His grasp on the nuances of the game and skill as an interviewer will revolutionize your understanding of football. In this podcast, Jeremiah focuses on shedding light on the recruitment process. Buckle in! 2. Baseball Tonight [Baseball] Baseball Tonight was originally part of ESPN’s TV programming, but now they’ve made the jump into the world of podcasts. The Baseball Tonight podcast is hosted by ESPN veteran, Buster Ol- ney. Olney has deep roots in the baseball world, and an extensive network of connections which he leverages in order to provide high-quality content to his listeners on a weekly basis. 3. The Lowe Post [Basketball] The Lowe Post is named after the show’s host: Zack Lowe. Lowe had been a resident NBA writer for ESPN, working under Bill Simmons, for quite some time before being tapped to host this pod- cast. He’s become one of ESPN’s go-to guys when it comes to podcasts, and The Lowe Post has become the linchpin for the world of basketball podcasts. 4. Football Weekly [Soccer] When they say “football,” they’re talking about the OTHER football. Soccer. But if you’re a true soccer fan, you already knew that. This podcast is brought to us from abroad, by soccer/football zealots such as James Richardson, Rafa Honigstein, Sid Lowe and more! If you enjoy keeping up with all or any of the various soccer leagues around the world, this podcast is sure to be interest- ing! GENRE FOUR SCIENTCE & NON-FICTION 1. Radiolab Radiolab comes to us from the brilliant minds that run NPR. Hosted by podcast savants Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad, Radiolab is an endless sea of stories and information that you would never have guessed could be so interesting. They take science and make it easy. They take com- plex ethical issues and make them simple. Whatever the subject matter, they will turn it into the kind of audio-emotional experience you never knew you craved.

To my parents—Mona and Ken Farnsworth, and Robin Dickson—thank you for your unending love, support, encouragement, and belief. As Seen in Spotlight on Comedy Comedy Best Bets 2004 10 Standout Stand-Ups Worth Watching May 27, 2004 By Amelia David D.C. Benny Storytelling is fast becoming as important to our current comedy decade as creating a one-person show was to the '90s, and we can't even think about storytelling without first putting D.C. Benny at the top of our list. From his earliest days at the Uptown Comedy Club in Harlem to his current status as a regular at the Comic Strip, the Comedy Cellar, Nuyorican Poets Café, and Boston Comedy Club, D.C. Benny has honed his fine, laid-back style of comedy using stories from his life, with his most important focus always being on his characters. Rather than wanting to be known either for monologues or characterization, Benny feels his style allows his audience simultaneously to get to know his own voice (from telling the story) and the voices of the characters populating the stories. Never one to rest on his comedy laurels, Benny started his current "Urban Myth" storytelling night (the first Friday of every month at 9 pm at NYC's Zinc Bar) as a place where audiences could see where the "funny" comes from in a comedian's jokes. Most comics make use of true experiences that they then exaggerate or distill down to a couple of lines. Benny believes the real story is almost always funnier, and that's why he created this show. "Urban Myth" has been building a loyal following who come to see seasoned comedy acts working their storytelling chops, including Ben Bailey, Vic Henley, Tony Woods, Dean Edwards, Jessica Wood, Bill Burr, and Back Stage Bistro Award winner Cory Kahaney.
