ROUTE, USN (RET.) PRESIDENT NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL Retired Vice Adm. Ronald A. Route comes to the appointment as President, Naval Postgraduate School with over twenty years of leadership experience at the senior executive and operational level, which included responsibilities 1n graduate education, program requirements and resources, international affairs, research and development. and ethics. Routers significant career assignments include President of the Naval War College, and Commander, Navy Warfare Development Command. tHe also served 1n two earlier flag officer assignments leading major d1v1s1 ons on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO): Director of Navy Programming and Director, Polit1co-M1litary Affairs. A career Surface Warfare Officer; Routefs sea duty included assignments and deployments in cruisers, destroyers, frigates and aircraft earners; he commanded the AEGIS cruiser USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) and the gu1ded-m1ss1le destroyer USS DEWEY (DDG 45). tH1s most recent command at sea was the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) Carner Stri ke Group of ten ships plus the embarked cam er air wing. Capping his active duty career of more than 36 years, his last assignment was as the Naval Inspector General, working directly for the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations, where he directed an inspection, assessment and studies program that provided Navy headquarters leadership and maior Navy commanders worldwide with important policy, organizational and ethics insight. After retirement from the Navy 1n 2008, Route spent more than three years as a senior vice president at Burdeshaw Associates, Ltd. ii an executive-level consulting firm specializing 1n defense industry and government business. On Sept. I, 2013, Route completed his term as President ofthe Surface Navy Assoc1at1on. a pos1t1on he had held for nearly five years. tHe has also been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, since 1998. Route holds a Bachelorfs of Science 1n Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, and a Masterfs of Science 1n Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also served as the Navyfs Senior Military Fellow on the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City, and attended the Executive Business Course, Kenan-Flager Business School at the University of North Carolina. DR. DOUGLAS A. HENSLER PROVOST NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL Dr. Douglas A. Hensler· became the 14th Provost of the Naval Postgraduate School on June 5, 2013. Prror academic servrce includes Dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wrch1ta State University (2008-2013), Dean and Srd Crarg Endowed Dean's Charr 1n the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno (2005-2008), and the W. Edwards Deming Distinguished Professor of Management at the Unrversrty of Colorado at Boulder rn a Joint appointment to the Coll ege of Engineering and Applied Science and the Leeds School of Business. At Boulder he also served as Co-Executive Director· of the Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Center for Entrepreneursh•p. Dr. Hensler has travell ed extensively and built a network of 1nternat1onal contacts and partnerships. He has served as Special Advisor to the Australi an Organisation for Quality (NSW) and as an adviser to the Speci al Adviser team of the Scottish First Minster: From 2002 to 2005 he served on the Academic Advisory Board of e-TQM Coll ege 1n Dubai, UAE. Before returning to the academic community, Or. Hensler achieved a high y successful management career that includes 13 years in proiect, staff and li ne management posrt1ons at two technology driven companies. These posit ions include nuclear industry quality assurance management and aerospace industry quality engineering management. plant quality management, production management leading an organization of 250 personnel, and R&D management leading an organ1zat1on developing state-of-the-art process improvements involving applied research. Dr. Hensler has provided training and consulting to American Airlines, CH2M-Hill, Texas Utrlrt1es, Sulzer, Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, Micro Motion, FEMA, Sporran Microsystems, and the Electricity Generating Authority ofTharland, and the Fulfillment Corporation of America. Doug's most recent appointment ncludes working with CEO's and other executives of the W ichrta aviation community including Sp rrit AeroSystems, Cessna, Bombardier/Leaqet, Boeing and Hawker Beechcraft, along with Koch Industries and Coleman (The Outdoor Company). Dr. Hensler's academic preparation includes a BSE in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences from Princeton University. an MBA from the University of Portland. and a Ph.D. 1n Finance from the University of Washington. He is a licensed professional engineer 1n Quality Engineering 1n the State of California.
