1 The DMC Corporation makes a 6-strand Light Effects Floss in metallic and pastel colors. Adding one strand of blue Light Effects Floss to the two strands of #3839 in the needle will add a lovely shine to the windows.

2 Do not stitch the dotted ling around the angel Moroni. It indicates the to be stitched in gold floss. You may combine one strand of metallic gold floss to two strand and the ball upon which he stands are worked as a normal cross stitch (x), then add a (+) directly on top of the (x) to create a rounded look. s of gold in your needle. A Helpful Hint for Beginning: Find the center of the chart and the center of the material. Find and stitch the two horizontal shaded areas (/) over the windows. Continue 5 squares to the right and stitch the first 3 x 23 (/) vertical squares of the 6-sided right tower, then the same 23 x 3 vertical squares of the left tower. This will give a beginning foundation for the project to reduce the possibility of counting errors.

Stone Carvings: The intricate carving on this temple adds to the beauty of the building. To indicate the carving within the small number of squares available, a combination of ecru and gray is used. You might stitch a 1sample in the middle of a few ecru stitches to see which gray you want to combine with the ecru.

Partial Cross-stitches and Backstitching: To indicate the dimensions of the 6-sided towers partial stitches are used. Fist stitch the full cross-stitches of each area, skipping the partial cross-stitch squares. Leave the partial cross-stitches until after the backstitching is done—it will be easier to keep your needle inside the backstitches as it enters the material. To fill these partial areas, begin at the corner hole of the narrowest square needing to be covered and make a very shallow-angled half stitch. Increase the angle of the half stitch as needed in the adjoining squares.

Backstitch Outline: The general rule is to use one less strand for outline backstitching than for cross- stitching. Outline backstitching is done usually after all the cross stitching is completed, one square at a time. However, in the areas where backstitching is done over cross-stitches (as in the window frames and stone work over the window glass) you might want to use two strands in the needle for the backstitching to show.

Material Needed: The design size (the number of squares covered by the actual design) is indicated under the chart. The finished size of the temple will be determined by the count of your even-weave fabric. This size can be calculated by dividing each number of the design size, (including vertical squares needed for personalization) by the number of squares per inch of the material chosen. After determining that measurement, add at least two inches to all four sides to allow adequate material for finishing or framing.

Floss Used: The numbers given are for both the DMC and Anchor floss companies. Either DMC or Anchor floss may be used, but do not mix floss from the two different companies because the color-matching andlight- reflecting differences will not be acceptable to your eye. To be sure that you will be satisfied with thecolors of the finished project, lay all the skeins on your chosen cloth to see if the color mix is pleasing toyou.

Personalizing: The same alphabet, used for the name of the temple on the chart, can be used to add names to your project. On a piece of graph paper, write out the letters, generally allowing a single square between each letter and three squares between the words. Keep your line lengths close to the horizontal width of the temple. Each line will take five vertical squares, plus two more vertical squares to separate each line. Don’t forget to add the squares for letters which descend below the line. Calculate the horizontal center point of each line, then add the lines to your project, using the bottom horizontal centering arrow of the temple as the attachment point. Be sure to add the additional personalized lines to the total vertical square count as you calculate the total design size.

Finishing Instructions: Always stitch with clean hands. Even if your completed project doesn’t appear soiled, it’s best to carefully handwash it with mild soap and warm water. Rinse completely and blot with a clean, light-colored bath towel without wringing, folding, or squeezing the material. Place the stitchery, floss-side down, on another dry bath towel, with both layers completely flat. Iron until completely dry, making sure the background of the cloth is smooth and the backstitch lines are straight. Protect the areas with a pressing cloth where metallic threads are used. Keep the cloth flat until it is mounted into a frame or the project is finished. Don’t frame a stitched project with glass—humidity caught under the glass may cause permanent damage from mildew.
