The ‘Glass gazette April 2006 www.nvcorvetteclub.com A newsletter published by the Northern Virginia Corvette club Content The Northern Virginia Corvette Club holds their 1st “Sir Isaac Newton’s Totally Awesome Driving School” Social Calendar 2 In the years 2004-2005 there were over 25 traffic deaths involving teenage drivers Ambassador Editorial 6 in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. On March 4th, 2006 the members of the Membership 8 Northern Virginia Corvette Club decided enough is enough and held their first teen driving school for young drivers in the Northern Virginia area. Concours Information 9 This was not your typical Driver’s Ed class. The young drivers were put though a series of real life situations in a controlled environment that tested their thinking, Concours Registration 10 reflexes, reactions, and actions throughout the day. The school was set up with five different stations that the drivers rotated to throughout the day then met back in the HPDE Registration 11 class at the end of the day for a short debrief and class certificate presentation. The five stations included; Contact Information 12 Classroom instruction (2 sessions) Braking exercises – Threshold braking, Accident avoidance, using ABS to maxi- Event Calendar 12 mum benefit. Egg shaped oval – Proper cornering, looking ahead, distractions, and proper breaking in turns. Slalom – Weight transfer, cornering left to right, being smooth. Wet skid pad – Forced Oversteer & Understeer, getting control of slides, and modifying their driving to deal with driving conditions. The school which was limited to 50 students was free of charge thanks to some great sponsors that got involved. All students and parents received goody bags that included safety items for them to keep in their car such as first aid kits, ice scrapers, tire pressure gauges, and other items. Everyone also received a free lunch. As an added twist to the school we allowed the parents to sit in the back seats so they could see first hand what their children were being taught, so they could learn also, and to gain confidence in their teen’s ability to drive safely. From the testimonials that we have received from the parents they learned just as much, and had just as much fun as their teens did. Most asked if we could set up a class for the parents. This school was a mass effort by a lot of people to keep it free for all the students. Without the support of the members of NVCC, Howard Snook of Long & Foster Realtors, Koons Chevrolet, Discount Tire Center, and Crossroads Online this school wouldn’t have happened. It also drew the attention of several County school sys- tems, Chambers of Commerce, and businesses as they were out to observe and offer their support for future Teen driving events. The club is now looking at doing 2-3 of these events a year. In short, everyone involved walked away with their head held high, a smile on their face, and felt proud that what the instructors taught may prove to save one of these young driver’s life one day. You must email your full name and license plate number to me at [email protected] in order to register. No matter what the posted speed limit is, do not go over. The Military Police enforce the speed limit. -DO NOT TALK ON A CELL PHONE, unless it is a hands free unit, while driving on Fort Belvoir! This is a violation that will get you a ticket. -Your vehicle is subject to search at any time while on Fort Belvoir. This is usually conducted while going through a gate. The security personnel will randomly pull a vehicle over and search it before allowing you to enter the Post.
