The ‘Glass gazette April 2006 www.nvcorvetteclub.com A newsletter published by the Northern Virginia Corvette club

Content The Northern Virginia Corvette Club holds their 1st “Sir Isaac Newton’s Totally Awesome Driving School” Social Calendar 2 In the years 2004-2005 there were over 25 traffic deaths involving teenage drivers Ambassador Editorial 6 in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. On March 4th, 2006 the members of the Membership 8 Northern Virginia Corvette Club decided enough is enough and held their first teen driving school for young drivers in the Northern Virginia area. Concours Information 9 This was not your typical Driver’s Ed class. The young drivers were put though a series of real life situations in a controlled environment that tested their thinking, Concours Registration 10 reflexes, reactions, and actions throughout the day. The school was set up with five different stations that the drivers rotated to throughout the day then met back in the HPDE Registration 11 class at the end of the day for a short debrief and class certificate presentation. The five stations included; Contact Information 12 Classroom instruction (2 sessions) Braking exercises – Threshold braking, Accident avoidance, using ABS to maxi- Event Calendar 12 mum benefit. Egg shaped oval – Proper cornering, looking ahead, distractions, and proper breaking in turns. Slalom – Weight transfer, cornering left to right, being smooth. Wet skid pad – Forced Oversteer & Understeer, getting control of slides, and modifying their driving to deal with driving conditions. The school which was limited to 50 students was free of charge thanks to some great sponsors that got involved. All students and parents received goody bags that included safety items for them to keep in their car such as first aid kits, ice scrapers, tire pressure gauges, and other items. Everyone also received a free lunch. As an added twist to the school we allowed the parents to sit in the back seats so they could see first hand what their children were being taught, so they could learn also, and to gain confidence in their teen’s ability to drive safely. From the testimonials that we have received from the parents they learned just as much, and had just as much fun as their teens did. Most asked if we could set up a class for the parents. This school was a mass effort by a lot of people to keep it free for all the students. Without the support of the members of NVCC, Howard Snook of Long & Foster Realtors, Koons Chevrolet, Discount Tire Center, and Crossroads Online this school wouldn’t have happened. It also drew the attention of several County school sys- tems, Chambers of Commerce, and businesses as they were out to observe and offer their support for future Teen driving events. The club is now looking at doing 2-3 of these events a year. In short, everyone involved walked away with their head held high, a smile on their face, and felt proud that what the instructors taught may prove to save one of these young driver’s life one day.

George Kerns Sponsored by Koons President, Northern Virginia Corvette Club Tysons Corner NVCC Social Calendar April 2006 – Laurie Kistner

Sat. 4/1/06 - Springpalooza '06 is a spring carnival sponsored by the Fort Belvoir Elemen- tary School PTA. They are looking for a car club that will be set up in front of the school. This is another great opportunity for us to show who we are. There will be about 300 peo- ple in attendance.

The event itself is from 11AM-2PM (excluding travel time) at the Fort Belvoir Elemen- tary School Cafeteria & Gym. I will need as many club members to come out as possible to make a good showing for the club. Important details:

-Lunch being provided is confirmed :) We will be getting food tickets at the event.

-We need to arrive NLT 10:30 AM. We shall meet at the Burke Lake Park Golf Course

Social Calendar—Laurie Kistner Parking Lot, located at the intersection of Route 123 (Ox Road) and Canterberry Road in Fairfax Station, Virginia, 22039 at 9:00 AM, with a brief drivers' meeting at 9:15 AM, and departing promptly at 9:30 AM.

-We can display the club banner. -There will be a talent show/games/moonbounce/etc...

-WE STILL NEED MORE CARS! Only have 13 signed up, we need up to 30. It's only a few hours out of the day, please sign up if you can.

-Each driver will be required to stop at the Visitor Center to get a vehicle pass. You'll need your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. It would help expedite the process if we can get our POC on Fort Belvoir to provide a list of cars and drivers to the Visitor Center prior to our arrival. Please register by COB 3/23 (no exceptions!) so I can attempt to arrange this. To get several cars thru this process will take some time. You must email your full name and license plate number to me at [email protected] in order to register. I need the info regardless of whether or not you possess a current DoD decal (those who have them WILL be able to go on through and not be subject to the non-DoD check-in process).

-DO NOT SPEED on Fort Belvoir! No matter what the posted speed limit is, do not go over. The Military Police enforce the speed limit.

-DO NOT TALK ON A CELL PHONE, unless it is a hands free unit, while driving on Fort Belvoir! This is a violation that will get you a ticket.

-Your vehicle is subject to search at any time while on Fort Belvoir. This is usually conducted while going through a gate. The security personnel will randomly pull a vehicle over and search it before allowing you to enter the Post. Directions to the caravan meeting point (Burke Lake Park Golf Course Parking lot): -Take Fairfax County Parkway to the Route 123 South (Ox Road) exit. -There will be a sign indicating 'Golf Course Parking Lot' on the left, Canterberry Road on the right. Take the left into the parking lot.

2 Sun. 4/2/06 - Aquia Creek Corvette Club is holding their annual "Crab Cruz”. Here is all the information/directions I've been given:

-Take Route 95 to the Stafford exit, meet in the Stafford, Virginia commuter parking lot on Route 630 (Courthouse Road) at 11:45 AM, leaving at noon.

-Next, cruise past the Walmart on Route 3, east of Fredericksburg and onward to Dahlgren, Virginia.

-You will go north on Route 301, past Route 218 and McDonald's, where you will arrive at approximately 1 PM; leave again at 1:30 PM and continue directly to Captain Billy's Crab House in Pope's Creek, Maryland. The toll bridge is free to enter Maryland, $3.00 to leave.

The club's website is as follows (although it doesn't look like it's been updated in a LONG time, you may want to check every once in a while as the event date approaches, in case of any changes): http://www.accclub.org/

Sat. 4/29/06 - Corvette Forum's Jim Strathearn and Shenandoah Valley Corvette Club are sponsoring this year's Spring Skyline Drive Cruise on Saturday, April 29th, 2006.

For those that remember past Skyline Cruises, we always have a blast! Attendance has been anywhere from 100- 200 or more 'vettes...the event keeps growing and growing each year.

Spring Skyline 2006 will benefit Blue Ridge Hospice, who took care of the final journey for a Corvette Forum member (and Skyline Cruise co-founder) who died on Christmas Eve 2004 of liver cancer. Registration will be a $10.00 donation to Blue Ridge Hospice, payable at the cruise start point in Front Royal, Virginia. Additionally, you must pay an entry fee to get into the park (good for 7 consecutive days), which is $10.00 or you may purchase an annual pass, which is now $30.00.

We will meet at the Newgate Shopping Center parking lot (corner of Routes 28 and 29 in Centreville) at 7:30 AM, drivers' meeting at 7:45 AM, leaving at 8 AM SHARP! We should arrive at the Front Royal Chevy dealership at around 9:00 AM, where those organizing the cruise will begin distributing goodie bags and door prizes. We will then leave for the cruise at 10:30 AM with a police escort through town. Please bring your family radios!

Next, we will cruise directly to Brookside in Luray via US-340, where we will have lunch. During lunch we will try for a group picture. Lunch will be the same format as in the Fall Skyline Cruise; you may go inside and do the buffet or stay outside and do the BBQ. Once we finish lunch, we will head up US-211 into the park and regroup at Stony Man. If we have 200 cars or more, there will be contingencies in place for additional regrouping locations. After regrouping, we will head down to Big Meadows to use the facilities, exchange stories, take pictures, yada yada yada. Andy Bolig from Corvette Enthusiast Magazine has come to past Skyline cruises and may be there again to take pictures and write another article on our infamous event!

Please register on the club website events tab, the online forum post, or e-mail me at [email protected] ONLY if you wish to join the Centreville caravan to the cruise starting location, so that I may have enough direc- tion sheets printed up for the drivers' meeting.

Directions: Newgate Shopping Center is conveniently located at the intersection of Routes 28 and 29 in Centre- ville. It is also accessible via Route 66 exit number 53A. We will meet in the parking lot that faces Route 28.

*Take Route 66 to Exit 53A. *Take Route 28 South *Take Route 29 South *Turn into Newgate Plaza (if coming from 66 westbound it will be the first right...if coming from 66 eastbound it will be a left). There is a Mobil gas station, Joann's Fabrics, post office, and Trader Joe's in this plaza.
