A newly-erupted, relatively unworn M3 exhibits drastically different characters than that tooth would after a lifetime of wear. On a highly-worn molar, the lophs that comprise the occlusal surface are more broadly spaced and the enamel ridges thicken in comparison to these respective characters on an unworn molar. Since Mammuthus taxonomy depends on the lamellar frequency (# of lophs/decimeter of occlusal surface) and enamel thickness of the third molar, given the effects of wear it becomes apparent that these taxonomic characters are variable throughout the tooth’s life. Therefore, employing static taxonomic identifications that are based on dynamic attributes is a fundamentally flawed practice. -

The study area lies along the ParanaH River, state of ParanaH , Brazil, at 223 43S latitude and 533 10W longitude, where the river is as yet undammed. Paleoclimatological data were obtained from 10 vibro cores and 15 motor auger holes. Sedimentological and pollen analyses plus TL and C dating were used to establish the following evolutionary history of Late Pleistocene and Holocene climates: First drier episode ?40,000}8000 BP First wetter episode 8000}3500 BP Second drier episode 3500}1500 BP Second (present) wet episode 1500 BP}Present Climatic intervals are in agreement with prior studies made in southern Brazil and in northeastern Argentina. THREE NEW PROCYONIDS (MAMMALIA, CARNIVORA) FROM THE BLANCAN OF FLORIDA Laura G. Emmert1,2 and Rachel A. Short1,3 ABSTRACT Fossils of the mammalian family Procyonidae are relatively abundant at many fossil localities in Florida. Analysis of specimens from 16 late Blancan localities from peninsular Florida demonstrate the presence of two species of Procyon and one species of Nasua. Procyon gipsoni sp. nov. is slightly larger than extant Procyon lotor and is distinguished by five dental characters including a lack of a crista between the para- cone and hypocone on the P4, absence of a basin at the lingual intersection of the hypocone and protocone on the P4, and a reduced metaconule on the M1. Procyon megalokolos sp. nov. is significantly larger than extant P. lotor and is characterized primarily by morphology of the postcrania, such as an expanded and posteriorly rotated humeral medial epicondyle, more prominent tibial tuberosity, and more pronounced radioulnar notch. Other than larger size, the dentition of P. megalokolos falls within the range of variation observed in extant P. lotor, suggesting that it may be an early member of the P. lotor lineage. Nasua mast- odonta sp. nov. has a unique accessory cusp on the m1 as well as multiple morphological differences in the dentition and postcrania, such as close appression of the trigonid of the m1 and a less expanded medial epicondyle of the humerus. We also synonymize Procyon rexroadensis, formerly the only known Blancan Procyon species in North America, with P. lotor due to a lack of distinct dental morphological features observed in specimens from its type locality in Kansas. -

The fossil remains occur in all parts of the informal Banta Shut-in formation, nowhere very fossiliferous. The formation is informally subdivided on the basis of stepwise ®ning and slowing deposition into Lower (least fossiliferous), Middle, and Red clay members, succeeded by the valley-®lling, Bench member (most fossiliferous). Identi®ed Carnivora include: cf. Pseudaelurus sp. and cf. Nimravides catocopis, medium and large extinct cats; Epicyon haydeni, large borophagine dog; Vulpes sp., small fox; cf. Eucyon sp., extinct primitive canine; Buisnictis chisoensis, n. sp., extinct skunk; and Martes sp., marten. B. chisoensis may be allied with Spilogale on the basis of mastoid specialization. Some of the Screw Bean taxa are late survivors of the Clarendonian Chronofauna, which extended through most or all of the early Hemphillian. The early early Hemphillian, late Miocene age attributed to the fauna is based on the Screw Bean assemblage postdating or- eodont and predating North American edentate occurrences, on lack of de®ning Hemphillian taxa, and on stage of evolution. At least six species of extinct mammalian megaherbivores are known from Pacheco 1. The probable occurrence of Megalonyx jeffersonii suggests a late Pleistocene age for the assemblage. Pacheco 2 has yielded a minimum of 20 species of mammals, and provides the first unambiguous Quaternary fossil record ofUrocyon , Procyon, Antrozous, Eptesicus, Lasiurus, Sorex ornatus, Tamias, and Microtus longicaudus from the San Francisco Bay region. While a radiocarbon date of 405 ± 45 RCYBP has been obtained for a single bone sample from Pacheco 2, the possibility that much of the assemblage is considerably older than this date is suggested by (1) the substantial loss of collagen in all other samples for which radiocarbon dating was unsuccessfully attempted and (2) the occurrence of Microtus longicaudus approximately 160 km to the west of, and 600 m lower in elevation than, its present range limit. -

Leng3,4 Most of Earth’s rain falls in the tropics, often in highly seasonal monsoon rains, which are thought to be coupled to the inter-hemispheric migrations of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone in response to the seasonal cycle of insolation. Yet characterization of tropical rainfall behaviour in the geologic past is poor. Here we combine new and existing hydroclimate records from six large-scale tropical regions with fully independent model-based rainfall 1234567890():,; reconstructions across the last interval of sustained warmth and ensuing climate cooling between 130 to 70 thousand years ago (Marine Isotope Stage 5). Our data-model approach reveals large-scale heterogeneous rainfall patterns in response to changes in climate. We note pervasive dipole-like tropical precipitation patterns, as well as different loci of pre- cipitation throughout Marine Isotope Stage 5 than recorded in the Holocene.
