5 ILEOCECAL VALVE & VALVES OF HOUSTON

• The Ileocecal Valve (ICV) is situated between the last part of the (the ) and the first part of the (the )

• It is on the right side, about mid-way between umbilicus and the ASIS, the front of the hip bone

• The Houston valve, normally located on the left side at about the same area, separates the from the and is actually transverse folds that keep the fecal matter from moving into the rectum

• The large intestine absorbs water, stores the fecal mass awaiting evacuation and has a high bacterial content

• The ICV should open at the proper time to allow the contents of the ileum to enter the cecum

• It should then remain closed to prevent reflux of the intestinal contents to enter the ileu

• Problems occur when either of these valves do not open or close correctly due to irritation or faulty body signals

• If the valve muscles become tense or spastic, this produces the “closed” syndrome

• A valve that does not close sufficiently, being weak or flaccid, is “open”

• It is the great imitator and can exaggerate any existing problem

7 SYMPTOMS OF THE ILEOCECAL VALVE DYSFUNCTION

• Many symptoms can occur if the valve remains open and toxic material regurgitated from the colon is absorbed by the ileum

• A stuck closed valve can cause the contents of the ileum to putrefy, not being passed on to the colon at the proper time

• This causes similar symptoms to an open valve, with one exception: the closed valve causes increased symptoms upon waking in the morning which ease with movement. • Anyone with ileocecal valve symptoms does not necessarily have an ICV problem.

• If serious symptoms exist, such as heart palpitations and chest pain, refer to the appropriate health professional to rule out any major problems.

• In kinesiology we do not diagnose or treat symptoms.

• We switch on and balance muscles restoring energy flow.

9 SYMPTOMS OF THE ILEOCECAL VALVE DYSFUNCTION

• Abdominal Pain • Carpal tunnel syndrome • Neck Stiffness • Sciatica

• Allergies • Chest pain • Pallor • Skin problems

• Bad Breath • Constipation • Pseudo bursitis • Sudden low back pain

• Bloating • Dark circles under eyes • Pseudo sacroiliac strain • Sudden thirst

• Body odor • Diarrhea • Pseudo sinus infection • Tinnitus

10 ILEOCECAL VALVE MUSCLES

• The valves contain muscle fibers which, like the other muscles we study, may be switched off or switched on

• Lack of muscle balance can lead to the valve being inappropriately open or closed

• The OPEN ICV is much more common than the CLOSED ICV, probably due to the peristaltic action of the large bowel

11 ILEOCECAL VALVE MUSCLES

The ICV has two sets of muscles:

1. The circular muscles encircle the area at the end of the ileum and close the valve by acting like a .

• If the circular muscles are not locking, the result is a stuck OPEN ICV and large bowel contents can regurgitate into the small bowel.

• If the muscle becomes spastic and will not open, a CLOSED ICV results.

2. A valve-like structure is formed by two transverse folds shaped to provide a one-way valve to prevent contents of the colon spilling back into the ileum. If this area becomes irritated an OPEN ICV can result.

12 ILEOCECAL VALVE ASSOCIATED MUSCLES/MERIDIANS

An imbalance of these internal muscles may be reflected in other body muscles:

1. Open ICV: Right psoas and/or iliacus may test weak, correlating with an under energy Kidney meridian

2. Closed ICV: Right quadriceps or rectus abdominis may test weak, correlating with toxic buildup within the small intestine

• Either way we can switch on the muscles in the usual manner

• Weakness in these body muscles does not mean that the valve is diseased or malfunctioning

13 TESTING THE ILEOCECAL VALVE

Testing:

1. Test the CL’s with the fingers of both hands over the lower right

2. If a strong indicator muscle (use quads or fascia lata ) goes weak the ICV is imbalanced

3. Have the person press their fingers gently into the area and pull up towards the left shoulder, which will close the valve

4. Retest. IM strong = OPEN ICV

5. If weak, have them push gently down and out towards the hip on the right side, which will open the valve

6. Retest. IM strong = CLOSED ICV

14 ILEOCECAL VALVE OPEN VALVE CORRECTION

• NLs: Inner third of the head of the humerus (for the iliacus) Below right ASIS. Side of C3 on neck

• NVs: Where a transverse line from the crest of the ilium meets the rectus abdominis

• Meridian points: K4 or BL 58 - If IM change occurs upon CLing, stimulate with firm pressure for 7 seconds

• Cranial: Push zygomatic arch together 7 times

• Nutrition: Chlorophyll and digestive aids

• Recheck CLing the ICV is strong then check with the more mode BL 58 on the back of the calf

K 58 15 ILEOCECAL VALVE CLOSED VALVE CORRECTION

• NLs: Under the rib cartilage (quadriceps) and inside of the thigh (rectus abdominis)

• NVs: Parietal eminences

• Meridian points: the Luo points BL 58 or K4 plus K1 - the sedation point for Kidney stimulate with firm pressure for 7 seconds if positive CL

• Cranial: Pull Zygomatic arch apart seven times

• Nutrition: Calcium, vitamin D and sometimes HCl when calcium cannot be absorbed

• Recheck CLing the ICV is strong. Also check with more mode. BL 58 on the back of the calf

K 58 16 FOODS THAT CAN IRRITATE AN ILEOCECAL VALVE

All roughage foods, which include: Raw fruits & vegetables, which will cause no problems if cooked:

• Popcorn • Seeds • Celery • Apples - Oranges

• Potato and corn chips • Whole grains • Cabbage • Salads

• Nuts • Lettuce • Pickles

• Carrots • Tomatoes Spicy foods, such as:

• Chili • Black and red pepper

• Peppers • Paprika • Alcoholic beverages

• Tacos • Cinnamon • Cocoa and chocolate

• Caffeine products

17 TEST AND CORRECTION FOR VALVES OF HOUSTON

Testing and Corrections are the same as the Ileocecal valve, but are on the left:

• Symptoms of an open valves of Houston could be a strong urge to defecate

• Symptoms of a closed valves of Houston could be constipation

18 ASSIGNMENT

1. Practice testing and balancing the Psoas, Iliacus, and the Upper Trapezius on two people, as well as get your own muscles tested and balanced.

2. Balance any found weak using the NL and NV techniques, then recheck with the more mode to see you did enough.

3. For muscles that test strong, retest while holding the More Mode and if they now tests weak, test again while stating “Hidden, (test), Sustained (test), Muscle Stretch (test)” and do any techniques that strengthened the mode.

4. Test and correct the Ileocecal valve and Valves of Houston and correct any areas testing weak.

5. Take the quiz for this class that will be posted on the website at the bottom of the webpage Structural 2016.

6. Communicate with your study partner from class at least once this week about your results and any breakthroughs and insights you are getting.
