ACSA Institutional Data Report

Institutional Metrics for Architectural Education ACSA Research - March 2020 Introduction

Report Summary

Founded in 1912 to advance the quality of architectural education, the Association of Collegiate Schools of (ACSA) represents all accredited programs and their faculty across the United States and Canada, as well as nonaccredited and international affiliate members around the world. The ACSA Institutional Data Report combines data collected by ACSA with data reported to the National Archi- tectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System (IPEDS), the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, and other architecture organizations to inves- tigate current and historical metrics of institutional effectiveness and begin to allow for peer institution comparisons. The report details more than 1,120 architecture degree programs at 726 institutions in the United States and Canada including trends in student enrollment, degrees offered, STEM designation, and regional reporting on student:faculty ratios and on-time graduation rates.

CIP CODE CHANGES FROM 2018-2020

Since the publication of the 2018 ACSA White Paper on Architectural Education Research and STEM, the number of architecture programs at ACSA member schools has more than quadrupled. In 2018 the ACSA Research and Scholarship Committee verified 13 institutions that utilized the only STEM-designated CIP Code for architecture and related services, 04.0902. Since that time, over 50 institutions have successfully changed their CIP code and many more are pursuing this change.

NEW 2020 CIP CODE CROSSWALK

The sixth edition of the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) provides a revised sytem for classifying programs of study currently being offered at colleges and around the country. Released in July 2019, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has added over 300 new CIP codes, nine of which fall under Architecture and Related Services (CIP 04). While data from this change will not be made pub- lic until 2022, postsecondary institutions will use the 2020 CIP when they report the degrees and certificates awarded for the 2020 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Completions Survey later this year.

Peer Institution Regions

ACSA Regions for Research

Using regions created by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the following regions were created specifically for the purpose of identifying peer institutions within architectural education. The map below shows the 11 comparative regions. This reformatted research metric allows ACSA to track regional shifts in the enrollments, budgets, and faculty dynamics of NAAB-ac- credited and candidate members, and Canadian CACB-accredited members. On the following pages, graduation rate is defined as the percentage of students who graduate within the published time to completion.

Note: Limited data are available for the Outlying Areas and Canada regions.

The 2018-2019 tuition averages reported below are based on annual tuition figures for NAAB and CACB programs. The data agregated in the table below were gathered through self-reported information provided to StudyArchitecture. com, the tuition data reported to the NAAB, and tutition figures provided on respective college and university registrar’s websites. On average, public institutions charge 2.0 - 2.5 times the in-state tution for out-of-state students. Tuition averages for private instutions report little difference between degree type. Consequently, the total cost of tution for the B.Arch at private instutitions is more expensive than the M.Arch due to the longer length of study. Tution averages for non-Canadian residents to study architecture in Canada are comparable to tuition averages for American students studying out-of-state.

Degree Types for Full-Time Faculty

Faculty credentials are often discussed as a way of gauging research capability. While approximately half of the faculty population in NAAB-accredited programs hold an M.Arch, just under one third of the population have completed post-professional and Ph.D programs. In recent years, numbers indicate a small growth in B.Arch credentials and a corresponding decline in post-professional credentials. Moreover, schools continue to report a decline in architectural registration. Schools also report a rapid decline in the percentage of full-time faculty who are registered in U.S. jurisdictions. However, it is worth noting that the statistics below do not include part-time and adjunct faculty, who are often licensed practitioners.

These metrics mimic architecture’s struggle to find balance between professional experience and research expertise.
