1. Highlights

™ There is an increase in the population figure compare to previous week as it is 24,326 as of May 24, 2012 reportedly due to improved re‐registration procedures in the Öncüpınar Container, not only due to new arrivals.

™ The Council from the Australian Embassy visited the Öncüpınar Container Site and the Islahiye Camp in on May 23, 2012. The Ambassador of Canada visited the Öncüpınar Container Site in Kilis and the Islahiye Camp in Gaziantep on May 24, 2012.

™ On May 25, 2012 the Government of Kuwait donated refrigerators, ventilators and electric furnaces through IHH to be distributed in the camps in Hatay and the donation has arrived in the camps. Reportedly, the amount of the donation is 350 of each item.

Total camp population is: 24,326 as of May 24, 2012.

There is no official information regarding arrival and return figures for the reporting period.

Currently arrivals from Syria are assisted in the border provinces of Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis and Şanlıurfa.

1: The population of the Kuyubaşı/Karbeyaz, Yayladağı 2 (YIBO), Altınözü I (TEKEL) and Reyhanlı camps in Hatay is moved to Islahiye camp in Gaziantep and to Öncüpınar container site in Kilis. It has been reported that these empty camps will be kept for while as standby and there is some use of these camps for new arrivals.

There is no available information regarding gender and age breakdowns of the camp populations in Hatay, Gaziantep, Kilis and Sanliurfa.

3. Situation Overview

Although it was previously reported that the Ceylanpınar Camp in Şanlıurfa will be moved to Kilis and Gaziantep, now the population of the Ceylanpınar Camp is increased to 1,149 persons as Kilis and Gaziantep are almost full.

A newly established registration system is in use in Öncüpınar Container Site and the Camp ID Cards will be renewed where the fingerprints will be recorded in a chip. The re‐ registration procedure is underway. The officials mentioned that with the new registration system, the Camp ID cards will contain the individual assistance of aid distribution, medical and education, and in the future will be used in the markets in the camp. The Officials added that with this new system duplicate registration and/or assistance will be prevented.

4. General Developments

Turkish Foreign Minister Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu received a delegation of Syrian National Council in on May 27, 2012. Foreign Ministry officials said that the delegation informed Mr. Davutoğlu about the situation in Syria and violation of human rights in their country in the meeting, the Official Anatolian News Agency reported. Mr. Davutoğlu said that Turkey condemned the latest attacks against civilians in Syria and was monitoring developments with a great concern.

The main opposition Party, Republican People’s Party (CHP) formally submitted a censure motion against Foreign Minister Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu on last Friday, criticizing the policies he promotes. It raises concerns, among other things, that the policy on Syria strained relations with other neighbors. In the light of the parliamentary majority of the Government, the censure motion is not to be believed to have a practical policy outcome.
