Mitchell spent three seasons with the Reds, batting .332 with 50 doubles, 55 home runs and 167 RBI MLB.COM 'Breaking' news: Cingrani develops cutter Reds lefty works in offseason to add another pitch offering By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | February 22nd, 2017 + 50 COMMENTS GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani can throw his four-seam fastball 95 mph, and consistent with his career, he used it often in 2016. It was so often that PITCHf/x data showed he threw his fastball more than 87 percent of the time. Cingrani started using a split-fingered fastball sometime in the second half, but he realized it was time to diversify the repertoire even more. He needed a breaking ball and used the offseason to develop a cut fastball. "It's just another way to get guys out," Cingrani said. "It gets hitters off thinking it's just going to be a fastball. I'm still trying to work on how I want that ball to move, but it's good and feels comfortable." At the suggestion of teammate and fellow reliever Caleb Cotham, Cingrani traveled to Kent, Wash., in the fall and worked out at Driveline Baseball. The facility, owned by Kyle Boddy, has gained a reputation for providing data-driven pitch training and also encourages building arm strength by playing catch with weighted balls. "Caleb is a pretty smart cat," Cingrani said.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 17, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1978-The Reds are the first to don green uniforms for a St. Patrick’s Day exhibition. The Reds even order green catching gear for the occasion. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Even if reinstated, Pete Rose's Hall future uncertain By C. Trent Rosecrans / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] / @ctrent Even if Pete Rose is reinstated to baseball, that would not guarantee him an easy road to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. On Monday, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Rose had formally applied to have his lifetime ban lifted. Manfred said he would "deal with" Rose's request. Rose, who has been banned from the game since 1989, was ruled ineligible for the Hall in 1991, when the organization voted to ban players on baseball's permanently ineligible list. If reinstated, Rose would have to be elected to the Hall by Expansion Era Committee, according to Hall of Fame spokesman Brad Horn. "Rose would be an eligible candidate for Hall of Fame consideration based on if he were to be reinstated by Major League Baseball," Horn wrote to the Enquirer in an email on Monday. "Should Rose be moved off Baseball's Ineligible list, his candidacy would fall to the Expansion Era Committee (which next votes next winter – 2016 for Induction in 2017), based on the rules for election. Only candidates who last appeared in a major league game within a 15-year window can be considered by the BBWAA."' Rose's induction into the Hall of Fame would rest on a 16-member committee that meets at baseball's annual Winter Meetings, needing the same 75 percent standard that is required by the constituency of the members of the BBWAA who have earned voting privileges by being active members of the organization for 10 years.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings February 25, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1957-The U.S. Supreme Court decides, 6-3, that baseball is the only professional sport exempt from antitrust laws MLB.COM Lorenzen impressive in bid for rotation spot Williams struck by foul ball in dugout; Reed struggles in outing By Mark Sheldon MLB.com Feb. 24th, 2018 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- As he tries to return to the rotation, following two-plus seasons as a reliever for the Reds, pitcher Michael Lorenzen was pleased with his first spring start. As the Reds took an 11-4 loss to the Rockies on Saturday, Lorenzen pitched two innings with one earned run, two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. "It felt great," Lorenzen said. "A lot of weak contact, tons of ground balls, ground-ball outs and strikeouts. That's what I'm looking for, especially at Great American Ball Park. I threw everything that I have to offer. Everything felt crisp, good." Lorenzen threw all of his pitches -- the four-seam fastball, curveball, slider, changeup, and sinker. Following a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, he encountered some trouble in the second inning. A bloop double to left-center field by Jordan Patterson put a runner on, and he scored on a strikeout-wild pitch in the dirt to Tom Murphy. A throwing error by catcher Devin Mesoraco allowed the run to score. A Brian Mundell single to center field accounted for the other hit. "The only thing that I'm going to go into my next bullpen is fastball command and just getting the timing down," Lorenzen said.

He gives up seven runs in 1.2 innings, three of them on a Bench home run. The Reds go on to win, 11-6 MLB.COM Cozart to start, Votto also gets All-Star nod By Jeremy Vernon / MLB.com | July 2nd, 2017 + 24 COMMENTS CINCINNATI -- Zack Cozart finally earned his donkey from Joey Votto on Sunday. The only question that remains is whether or not they choose to ride the burro together to Miami next week. Both Cozart and Votto are heading to South Beach for the 2017 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. The former will also start, after earning the most votes among National League shortstops in the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot. "I didn't think that I would be nervous to find out if I'm starting or not," Cozart said. "I was hoping that I would make the team, but all of a sudden I was thinking, 'Man, I really want to start the game.' I'm just honored, man. It's a cool thing that you get recognized for the play you've had on the field." Cozart entered 2017 having missed significant time in each of the previous two seasons and batting .246 for his career, but he has blown that number out of the water so far this season. The first-time All-Star currently leads all Major League shortstops in batting average (.322) and OPS (.958), and he's on pace to post new career highs in runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, and on-base and slugging percentage.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings May 18, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1912-The official dedication of Redland Field, later known as Crosley Field, is held MLB.COM Reds bring back Garrett for finale vs. Lester, Cubs By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | 6:13 AM ET + 4 COMMENTS It may seem odd, but the Reds' most consistent starter this season -- rookie Amir Garrett -- will return from a brief demotion to Triple-A to face the Cubs and ace Jon Lester in Thursday's series finale at Wrigley Field. Because of two off-days within five days -- which temporarily eliminated the need for five starters -- and the organization's desire to limit Garrett's innings, the Reds sent him to Louisville following his May 6 start vs. the Giants. Garrett had quality starts in five of his six outings (36 innings), with 22 hits, 14 walks, 28 strikeouts and a 4.25 ERA. "Really, you don't even have to make an argument that he was our best pitcher when he left here," manager Bryan Price said. "He gave us a chance to win five out of six times." While he was away, Garrett threw two bullpen sessions and made one two-inning start, and struck out all six batters he faced. Lester is coming off one of his better starts of the season, having tied a season high with nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings against the Cardinals on Saturday. But he took a 5-3 loss, with four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks. In his previous start vs.

A’s News Clips, Monday, October 24, 2011 Expert poring over long-lost Philadelphia A's records By Frank Fitzpatrick, Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer While Moneyball might be box-office magic, the baseball team at the heart of that hit movie desperately needs to pull a rabbit out of its green-and-gold hat. Fifty-eight years after they abandoned Philadelphia, the Oakland A's are a mess. They finished 22 games behind AL West champ Texas this season and their worst-in-baseball attendance of 1.4 million was a whopping 2.2 million less than the Phillies drew in the Athletics' old hometown. Curiously, though, as the Athletics' 2011 season headed for the Dumpster, a huge chunk of franchise history that long ago had been emptied into one has resurfaced. Accounting ledgers and films from the 53 years Connie Mack's Athletics spent in Philadelphia - items historians had long believed were gone forever - showed up on eBay earlier this year. The material had been salvaged from an Oakland Coliseum Dumpster decades ago by a ballpark employee who had kept it all in his garage until selling it at a flea market recently for less than $200. The flea-market purchaser quickly auctioned the lot on eBay early in 2011 and that's where Rob Rodriguez, a sports- memorabilia dealer in Reno, Nev., bought it all for $4,000. "I was just flipping through eBay's sports-memorabilia section when I noticed this stuff," said Rodriguez, 54. "I said, 'Wow, this looks great.' " Exactly how valuable Rodriguez's mementos will be to collectors and historians isn't entirely clear.

MLB.COM Leake goes five strong, Satin plays hero as Reds rally vs. A's Satin hits homer, adds game-winning single in 9th By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com / [email protected] / @m_sheldon GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- In a game that featured strong starting pitchers from both sides, the Reds emerged with a 4-3 comeback win over the A's on Sunday afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark. A's rotation candidate Kendall Graveman tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and five strikeouts. Oakland pitchers kept the Reds' bats mostly quiet until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Josh Satin, a non-roster invite, slugged a three-run homer off Brock Huntzinger to tie the game at 3-3. Satin added a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth off Fernando Rodriguez, scoring Kristopher Negron to cap his four-RBI day. Meanwhile, Reds starter Mike Leake gave up one earned run and four hits over his five innings with no walks and two strikeouts. It was the first run Leake surrendered in four starts during what's been a strong spring. Oakland reached Leake with three hits in the top of the fourth inning, including a double to right-center field by Mark Canha that scored Marcus Semien. A second run was prevented from crossing on a perfectly executed relay from center fielder Skip Schumaker to shortstop Zack Cozart to catcher Tucker Barnhart, who tagged out Ike Davis.

  • A Short History of Ejections David Vincent
A Short History of Ejections David Vincent In 1889, the baseball rules were changed to allow an umpire to remove a player from the game for an offense. Previously, the arbiter could only fine such player. The new rule allowed the umpire to eject a player for the repetition of any finable offense. The fine system had started in 1879. The first person to be ejected was Dave Orr of the Columbus Colts of the American Association. He was upset about a call at 3B by umpire Fred Goldsmith on May 25, 1889 and was told by the arbiter that his services were no longer required that day. Seven days later, Buck Ewing of the National League’s New York Giants was tossed for foul language directed at umpire Wes Curry. Ewing was the first NL player to be ejected. Between 1924 and 1946 in the NL and 1907 and 1952 in the American League, a person ejected from the first game of a double header was disqualified from the second game. Before those rules were put in place, several players were ejected from both games played in one day. Jesse Burkett is the first known player to be ejected from both games of a double header. This occurred on August 4, 1897 when Burkett’s Cleveland Spiders were in Louisville. Burkett was tossed in each game for arguing about the strike zone with umpire Jimmy Wolf. The following list contains the people known to have been ejected from both game of a double header.
