Mitchell spent three seasons with the Reds, batting .332 with 50 doubles, 55 home runs and 167 RBI MLB.COM 'Breaking' news: Cingrani develops cutter Reds lefty works in offseason to add another pitch offering By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | @m_sheldon | February 22nd, 2017 + 50 COMMENTS GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani can throw his four-seam fastball 95 mph, and consistent with his career, he used it often in 2016. It was so often that PITCHf/x data showed he threw his fastball more than 87 percent of the time. Cingrani started using a split-fingered fastball sometime in the second half, but he realized it was time to diversify the repertoire even more. He needed a breaking ball and used the offseason to develop a cut fastball. "It's just another way to get guys out," Cingrani said. "It gets hitters off thinking it's just going to be a fastball. I'm still trying to work on how I want that ball to move, but it's good and feels comfortable." At the suggestion of teammate and fellow reliever Caleb Cotham, Cingrani traveled to Kent, Wash., in the fall and worked out at Driveline Baseball. The facility, owned by Kyle Boddy, has gained a reputation for providing data-driven pitch training and also encourages building arm strength by playing catch with weighted balls. "Caleb is a pretty smart cat," Cingrani said.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 17, 2015 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1978-The Reds are the first to don green uniforms for a St. Patrick’s Day exhibition. The Reds even order green catching gear for the occasion. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Even if reinstated, Pete Rose's Hall future uncertain By C. Trent Rosecrans / Cincinnati Enquirer / [email protected] / @ctrent Even if Pete Rose is reinstated to baseball, that would not guarantee him an easy road to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. On Monday, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Rose had formally applied to have his lifetime ban lifted. Manfred said he would "deal with" Rose's request. Rose, who has been banned from the game since 1989, was ruled ineligible for the Hall in 1991, when the organization voted to ban players on baseball's permanently ineligible list. If reinstated, Rose would have to be elected to the Hall by Expansion Era Committee, according to Hall of Fame spokesman Brad Horn. "Rose would be an eligible candidate for Hall of Fame consideration based on if he were to be reinstated by Major League Baseball," Horn wrote to the Enquirer in an email on Monday. "Should Rose be moved off Baseball's Ineligible list, his candidacy would fall to the Expansion Era Committee (which next votes next winter – 2016 for Induction in 2017), based on the rules for election. Only candidates who last appeared in a major league game within a 15-year window can be considered by the BBWAA."' Rose's induction into the Hall of Fame would rest on a 16-member committee that meets at baseball's annual Winter Meetings, needing the same 75 percent standard that is required by the constituency of the members of the BBWAA who have earned voting privileges by being active members of the organization for 10 years.

As the Reds took an 11-4 loss to the Rockies on Saturday, Lorenzen pitched two innings with one earned run, two hits, no walks and three strikeouts. "It felt great," Lorenzen said. "A lot of weak contact, tons of ground balls, ground-ball outs and strikeouts. That's what I'm looking for, especially at Great American Ball Park. I threw everything that I have to offer. Everything felt crisp, good." Lorenzen threw all of his pitches -- the four-seam fastball, curveball, slider, changeup, and sinker. Following a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, he encountered some trouble in the second inning. A bloop double to left-center field by Jordan Patterson put a runner on, and he scored on a strikeout-wild pitch in the dirt to Tom Murphy. A throwing error by catcher Devin Mesoraco allowed the run to score. A Brian Mundell single to center field accounted for the other hit. "The only thing that I'm going to go into my next bullpen is fastball command and just getting the timing down," Lorenzen said.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings July 3, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1975-Giants rookie pitcher, John Montefusco, predicts he will shut out the Reds and strike out Johnny Bench four times. He gives up seven runs in 1.2 innings, three of them on a Bench home run. The Reds go on to win, 11-6 MLB.COM Cozart to start, Votto also gets All-Star nod By Jeremy Vernon / MLB.com | July 2nd, 2017 + 24 COMMENTS CINCINNATI -- Zack Cozart finally earned his donkey from Joey Votto on Sunday. The only question that remains is whether or not they choose to ride the burro together to Miami next week. Both Cozart and Votto are heading to South Beach for the 2017 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. The former will also start, after earning the most votes among National League shortstops in the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot. "I didn't think that I would be nervous to find out if I'm starting or not," Cozart said. "I was hoping that I would make the team, but all of a sudden I was thinking, 'Man, I really want to start the game.' I'm just honored, man. It's a cool thing that you get recognized for the play you've had on the field." Cozart entered 2017 having missed significant time in each of the previous two seasons and batting .246 for his career, but he has blown that number out of the water so far this season. The first-time All-Star currently leads all Major League shortstops in batting average (.322) and OPS (.958), and he's on pace to post new career highs in runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, and on-base and slugging percentage.
